 Born and raised in Massachusetts, Peter Harkey was a bowling alley owner and was 45 years old. South Carolina resident Patricia Jackson was a 49 year old truck assembler. 33 year old Hunter Ellis worked as a fedex pilot in California. Sarah Jones was a 24 year old account manager and a California native.

 Gabriel Cade was a bartender from California and was 23 years old. Gina Crews from Florida worked as a 28 year old nature guide. As a native of Massachusetts, Rob Mariano worked as a construction worker and was a 26 year old. John Carroll was a 36 year old resident of Nebraska and worked as a registered nurse.

 The sixteen participants were divided up into teams of eight. The tribe known as Maraamu included Gina, Hunter, Patricia, Peter, Rob, Sarah, Sean and Vecepia. The Rotu tribe consisted of Gabriel, Kathy, Neleh, Paschal, John, Robert, Tammy and Zoe. After Maraamu lost three members of their tribe, a twist occurred.

The tribes switched players. Kathy, Neleh and Paschal went to Maraamu and Rob, Sean and Vecepia joined Rotu. After Sarah and Gina were voted off Maraamu and Rotu lost Gabriel, the tribes merged.

The newly formed Soliantu tribe included remaining players John, Kathy, Neleh, Paschal, Rob, Robert, Sean, Tammy, Vecepia and Zoe.
