Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What essential did teams begin their visit to the Marquesas without?

Answer: Food

Arriving at the Marquesas on the fishing trawler Amaryllis, sixteen people were brought to their home for the next several weeks. Teams would be given two machetes, two cooking pots, two empty water containers, a filet knife, a frying pan, and a magnifying glass-- no food.

In thirty-nine days, the sixteen castaways would inevitably be whittled down to one Sole Survivor'. In the first moments of the game, teams gathered their items, jumped overboard to their inflatable, and met each other for the first time. Splitting apart, they would need to head to their respective beaches, set up camp, and begin to survive in this harsh environment.
2. On Day 1, castaways were split into two teams of eight. One team was named Maraamu and the other was named Rotu. What do these words mean in Marquesan?

Answer: Wind and Rain

The Maraamu tribe, who would always wear yellow buffs, would feature a name meaning wind. In a "Survivor" first, the Maraamu tribe lost all but one of the team immunity challenges before the merge creating a rather large axis of power. The Rotu tribe, meaning water, wore blue buffs (suitably).
Both teams' camps became known for their vast differences. While both were situated on different beaches, Maraamu's was home to a number of pesky bugs. Maraamu also had a sandy beach compared to Rotu's rockier locale. Both varied in their water sources as well.
3. As is typical before the second tribal council ceremony, teams needed to complete a food challenge. During this battle for immunity, tribe members needed to eat fafaru, a delicacy made of which of these?

Answer: Fish

On Day 6, teams headed to their second Immunity Challenge and performed a relatively disgusting task involving the eating of fafaru, raw fish left to soak in rotting seafood and sun-baked. Judging by the amount of flies on the meat while teams were required to bob for large pieces, it could have been disgusting. All fifteen castaways were able to complete the task leading to a tiebreaker in which each team chose an opposing tribe member to ingest a bowl of the delicacy. Maraamu told Neleh to complete the task while Rob M. was selected by Rotu. Neleh completed the task while Rob was unable to stomach the food, so Rotu won a third consecutive challenge (and second consecutive immunity).
4. On Day 7, which member of the Rotu team had a painful encounter with a sea urchin?

Answer: John

On Day 7, while searching for food, John happened to place his hand onto a sea urchin. In an effort to stop the poisonous sting of the urchin's needles, one of his team members, Kathy, was asked to urinate on the wound. After this event, fellow team member Rob D. accidentally sliced his foot between bamboo and a rock forcing John, a registered physician, to tend to the wound.
But it didn't end there. On the same day, while searching for shells, John once again suffered an injury. This time, a hiding eel lacerated his finger.
Ahh...the dangers of surviving the Marquesas.
Despite their injuries, both castaways survived into the merge.
5. Before teams merged, a surprise tribal switch occurred. How many members of each tribe ended up switching teams?

Answer: Three

On Day 10, during the Reward Challenge, teams were told to stand atop different wooden discs. When they flipped these over they would each receive a new buff indicating the team they would need to join. While some members of each tribe received the same buff and stayed on the same beach, three from each tribe went to new homes. Neleh, Paschal, and Kathy traveled to Maraamu Beach while Rob M., Vecepia, and Sean became members of Rotu.

This ultimately changed the dynamic of the game-- in the subsequent Immunity Challenge, Maraamu lost once again and the votes shifted. Later Tribal Council sequences were likewise affected.
6. The teams merged on Day 19. The new team took on the name Soliantu, a word with deep Marquesan meaning.

Answer: False

It is completely true that teams became Soliantu during the merge on Day 19, but the word Soliantu is nonsense-- it has no Marquesan background. When the time came for teams to come together, a representative from each was asked to meet as a diplomat. During this conversation, Kathy (the Maraamu representative) and Rob M. (the Rotu representative) created the word 'Soliantu' on their own, intending for it to mean 'Sacred Allegiance to the Sun'. Before this was revealed, Maraamu gathered supplies from their camp to rejoin Rotu at their beach, the team distributed new, purple buffs, and a flag was unveiled.
7. On Day 29, the tribe competed for immunity in a fire-making task, as is typical of many seasons. In this challenge, the competitors needed to create a fire to do which of these?

Answer: Make popcorn

After a series of challenges to reward single players and some difficult Immunity Challenges responsible for reshaping the game, this fourth individual Immunity Challenge took a straightforward task, creating fire, and made it of the utmost importance. Tribe members needed to use a flint and steel to light a fire and pop popcorn in oil. Once this was done they needed to bring their fire to a nearby pyre to light it and claim immunity. Robert won immunity during this task forcing the majority alliance to vote out Tammy (as per their plans). Robert was eliminated the following Tribal Council.
8. In this season, for the first time, individual immunity was able to be gifted to another player before the votes were taken. Did anyone choose to trade off their immunity necklace to save another player?

Answer: No

Unsurprisingly, immunity was highly sought-after and held onto by each of its owners during this season. Although individuals were allowed to give the necklace to anyone else at any time, no one took the offer instead opting to protect themselves. This happened on more than one occasion; Tammy, for example, won the immunity necklace on one occasion to save herself from what seemed like a set vote. Zoe was eliminated instead. During the next Tribal Council, Rob held onto the necklace and forced Tammy out. Perhaps the immunity necklace holds too much value to simply hand off.
9. The final four, caught in a tie vote between Kathy and Neleh, ultimately had to pull rocks at random to decide which tribe member would be voted out. Who left the game in fourth place?

Answer: Paschal

As Day 37 rolled around, the final four prepared for their penultimate Immunity Challenge, a trivia challenge consisting of facts about the other previous tribe members. The result of this was a win for Vecepia and a two-on-two vote. Kathy and Vecepia voted for Neleh while Neleh and Paschal voted for Kathy.

This occurred twice and led to a much-disputed tie-breaker in which the three non-immune tribe members needed to pull coloured rocks from a bag to save themselves. Paschal drew the purple rock and, despite having no votes cast against him the entire duration of the game, was eliminated from the running.
10. By a vote of four to three, which castaway became the Sole Survivor of "Survivor: Marquesas"?

Answer: Vecepia

After a series of down-to-the-wire challenges and votes, it finally came down to the ultimate vote for the Sole Survivor. At the end of thirty-nine days in the Marquesas Islands, Vecepia Towery took home the million dollar prize receiving votes from John, Tammy, Robert, and Sean. Neleh Dennis took only three votes, one each from Kathy, Paschal, and Zoe.

The votes were taken in the Marquesas Islands but not revealed until five months later when the tribe members reunited in New York City for the finale.
