Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the episode "Contagion," an Iconian probe wreaks havoc on the computer of the Enterprise and nearly fries our beloved Lt. Commander Data beyond repair! What classic command do we hear Captain Picard give the computer for the very first time in this episode?

Answer: tea earl grey hot

A civilized drink for a quintessentially civilized man. Due to the intermittent computer errors caused by the Iconian probe, the replicator delivers a potted plant in lieu of Picard's much-desired cup of tea. The problems aboard the Enterprise notwithstanding, the crew also manages to find one of the Iconian "gateways," an ancient piece of technology once thought apocryphal that allows individuals to travel to any destination in the galaxy instantaneously.

Another Iconian gateway is found several years later in the Gamma Quadrant, as revealed in the "DS9" episode "To the Death."
2. In "The Royale," Riker, Data and Worf beam down to a planet where they encounter the replica of a 20th-century hotel/casino. In orbit of this planet, the Enterprise recovers a piece of debris from an old NASA module, the Charybdis. How many stars are featured on the American flag seen on this debris?

Answer: 52

The original craft was evidently launched between the years 2033 and 2079, when the United States was comprised of 52 states. The away team finds the remains of Col. Stephen Richey within the hotel, where he had been trapped for the remainder of his life.

In order to escape themselves, Lt. Commander Data and the away team must win enough money gambling to buy-out the hotel. Given the android's exceptional analytical skills, this proves extraordinarily easy.
3. At the beginning of "Time Squared," what dish does Commander Riker prepare for his fellow officers?

Answer: Omelets

With the exception of Worf, Riker's guests find his omelets barely palatable. This is one of the more mundane scenes in an otherwise very interesting episode. The Enterprise encounters a double of Captain Picard, apparently the lone of survivor of a disaster which will take place six hours into the Enterprise's future.

In the end, the "present" Jean-Luc Picard kills his double in order to stop the latter from initiating the same chain of events which led to the future Enterprise's destruction.

It is interesting to note that Chief O'Brien seems utterly baffled at the sight of the future Picard's lifeless body. O'Brien would have the opportunity to gaze upon the corpse of his own future self in the "Deep Space Nine" episode "Visionary."
4. Which of the following starships has William Riker NOT either commanded or been offered the command of?

Answer: USS Sutherland

In "The Icarus Factor," Riker is offered command of the USS Aries. Much to his surprise, the civilian attaché sent to instruct Riker on the Aries' current mission is none other than his estranged father. The Enterprise's XO would temporarily assume command of the decommissioned USS Hathaway as part of war games in the later season-two episode "Peak Performance." In "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I," Riker turns down command of the Melbourne (as he ultimately does the Aries in "The Icarus Factor"), while the USS Sutherland is Data's command during the Federation task-force in "Redemption, Part II." At the end of "Star Trek: Nemesis," we learn that Riker has finally accepted a long-term commission, that of the USS Titan.
5. How closely were you paying attention? Wesley Crusher gets to head his first project aboard the Enterprise in "Pen Pals." What sort of geological test does Crusher order Ensign Davies to run on Drema IV?

Answer: Ico-spectrogram

Intimidated by giving an order to an older officer, the acting ensign seeks the advice of Commander Riker. In part due to the efforts of Wesley and his team, the Enterprise is able to stop the geological instability on Drema IV. Meanwhile, Data makes contact with Sarjenka, a young girl on this pre-warp planet--an action in clear violation of the Prime Directive. Though Picard initially admonishes Data for his decision, the Captain allows Data to continue contacting Sarjenka after hearing the girl's desperate pleas for help.
6. In an effort to challenge the wisdom of Starfleet's mission to explore the unknown, Q propels the Enterprise and its crew 7,000 light-years from Federation space into system J-25, where they meet the Borg for the first time. Are the Borg shown to assimilate members of the Enterprise crew in the episode "Q Who?"

Answer: No

Interestingly, there is no mention of assimilation in this first episode featuring the Borg. Although a portion of the Enterprise's saucer section containing 18 people is carved out and recovered by the Borg cube, it is not known whether these individuals were assimilated. From Guinan's warning in this episode, the assumption is that the Borg would destroy the Enterprise if given the opportunity.

By the time of "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I," the Borg's modus operandi has seemingly changed, as we find out after the shocking transformation of Captain Picard into Locutus.
7. The Pakleds are introduced to us as a rotund, intellectually challenged group of aliens in "Samaritan Snare." They prove to be more clever than they appear, however, after kidnapping Geordi La Forge. In a scheme to save himself, what does Geordi claim the Enterprise has used to disable the Pakleds' weapons?

Answer: A crimson force field

Unbeknownst to the Pakleds, Geordi has disabled the ship's weapons himself while the Enterprise emits a reddish gas from its Bussard collectors as part of the ruse. After convincing the Pakleds that they're no match for the Enterprise's "crimson force field," the group reluctantly drops its shields and allows the Enterprise to beam back their chief engineer.

In the "Voyager" episode "Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy," the Doctor convinces the Hierarchy that Voyager possesses a devastating "photonic cannon" in order to deter an attack.

The Kolvaard Starbust isn't a weapon, but rather a flying formation which Wesley Crusher and a group of fellow officers attempt in the fifth-season episode "The First Duty," with tragic consequences.
8. What is the name of the clone-based society that the Enterprise encounters in "Up the Long Ladder"?

Answer: Mariposans

The Mariposans kidnap and attempt to clone both Commander Riker and Dr. Pulaski, both of whom possess viable DNA. During the same mission, the Enterprise finds a group of agrarian humans, the Bringloidi. In order to replenish their genetic material, the Mariposans agree to integrate with the Bringloidi, much to the relief of the Enterprise crew. Meanwhile, Worf catches the Klingon version of the measles in this episode.
9. In an effort to escape the romantic overtures of Lwaxana Troi in "Manhunt," Captain Picard enjoys some time in the holodeck running his Dixon Hill program. When Riker enters the program later in the episode, how does Picard introduce his first officer to the holodeck characters?

Answer: Nails

Why Picard picks this moniker is anyone's guess! Commander Data seems to pass himself off as "Carlos" from South America. Mrs. Troi eventually finds Picard in his computer-generated hideout and proceeds to fall in love with Rex, a bartender in the program, before realizing that he's a holodeck character! After imposing upon Picard and others among the crew, the telepathic Lwaxana finally makes herself useful by identifying the two Antedean "delegates" being transported to the planet Pacifica as assassins.
10. What is the name of the Ferengi ship that ambushes the Enterprise while it is conducting war games in "Peak Performance"?

Answer: Kreechta

Aboard the USS Hathaway, Commander Riker is able to trick the Enterprise bridge crew into believing that a holograhic Romulan Warbird is the genuine entity. Thus, when a Ferengi attack vessel appears on the Enterprise's sensors, Picard dismisses it as another illusion.

The Kreechta, however, is very much real, and cripples the Enterprise before it can respond. Rather than surrender the Hathaway per the demands of the Ferengi, the Enterprise appears to destroy it in an act of desperation. Data, however, is able to coordinate a precisely timed maneuver between the two Starfleet vessels that ultimately allows the Hathaway to outmaneuver the Kreechta.

The Ferengi retreat in disgrace.
