Answer: Chicago, USA

"Station Eleven" is set in and around Chicago; views of the city appear occasionally throughout. The story on which the television mini-series is based was set in Toronto, Canada. The American producers reset it in Chicago, Illinois. Filming began in Chicago but was moved to Missassauga near Toronto because of the COVID pandemic.
2. On what was the TV miniseries "Station 11" based?

Answer: a novel by Emily St. John Mandel

Emily St. John Mandel is a Canadian novelist. Her works include "Last Night in Montreal" (2009), "The Singer's Gun" (2010), "The Lola Quartet" (2012), "Station Eleven" (2014) and "The Glass Hotel" (2020). "Station Eleven" has been translated into over thirty languages. It is the first of her works to be adapted to the screen.
3. What is the time frame embraced by "Station Eleven"?

Answer: all of these

The first episode includes scenes from all three of these time periods. It shows the day on which the episode slammed into the city. It shows Jeevan and Kirsten leaving the apartment. It shows Kristen rehearsing for a play. The story can be difficult to follow in places where it jumps without transition between times.
4. The worldwide pandemic in "Station Eleven" is severe; survival rates are low. What does the Mayor of Chicago say the survival rate is?

Answer: one in one thousand

The mayor says, in a broadcast, that the survival rate is about one in one thousand victims. The population of the Chicago Metropolitan Area (Greater Chicago), also called "Chicagoland," in 2019 was 9.459 million people. That would mean that roughly less than 10,000 people would survive such an epidemic there.
5. According to the TV miniseries, what was Station Eleven?

Answer: a comic book/graphic novel

"Station Eleven" is a comic book/graphic novel created by Miranda Carroll, Arthur Leander's first wife, which figures in several ways in this story. Kristen reads from her copy throughout. The Prophet uses its story as a basis for his teachings to his followers. Kristen and Tyler perform a scene from it to persuade the people at the airport that they are really actors.

The graphic novel is the story of an astronaut stranded in space.
6. The Prophet is a mysterious figure who leads a band of lost children. Who turns out to be the Prophet?

Answer: Tyler Leander, Arthur and Elizabeth's son

Daniel Zovatto portrays Tyler Leander. He is so fascinated by the graphic novel that he has memorized all of its lines. These he uses to teach his own post-apocalyptic philosophy/religion. Tyler received his copy from Miranda through his father Arthur.

The Prophet is revealed to be Tyler Leander in episode 5 when he sets fire to a plane on the tarmac at the airport. Kristen and the Prophet travel to the airport; he has a destructive plan in mind. In episode 8, he destroys the Museum of Civilization for which the others lock him in a sort of prison.
7. Reference is made several times in "Station Eleven" to "The Wheel." What is this wheel?

Answer: performance itinerary of the Traveling Symphony

In episode 4, a man from the Museum of Civilization appears for the second time and invites the Traveling Symphony to put on a performance for the airport community. Sarah, the director, declines because they never leave The Wheel. By this she means a circuit of cities surrounding Lake Michigan.

In episode 10, Kristen tells Jevan she will see him in a year at the airport because she has added that community to The Wheel.
8. Why was the character Kirsten Raymonde played by two different actors -- Matilda Lawler and Mackenzie Davis -- in "Station Eleven"?

Answer: one is her as an adult; one as a child

Matilda Lawler portrays young Kristen: a child actress in a show with Arthur Leander who is rescued by character Jeevan Chaudhary from the theatre. Mackenzie Davis portrays Kirsten Raymonde: a young woman who performs as an actor and directs in the Traveling Symphony.
9. Is the character Jeevan Chaudhary really a licensed physician with an M.D. degree?

Answer: No

Episode 9 of "Station Eleven" is titled "Dr. Chaudhary." In episode 1, he recognized from the audience that actor Arthur Leander was having a heart attack on stage. His sister is a hospital nurse. In the first year after the epidemic, Jeevan is attacked by a wolf.

A doctor, Terry, who runs a small hospital in an abandoned department store, saves his life by amputating his foot. He had aspirations to become an E.M.T. She believes him to be an M.D. and asks him to stay and help her deliver numerous babies which are all expected at about the same time.

The experience inspires him to become a "healer" with neither a license nor formal medical education.
10. Which of Shakespeare's plays is performed by the Traveling Symphony at the Severn City airport in the last episode?

Answer: Hamlet

The Traveling Symphony has a large Shakespearean repertoire. Once they are released from quarantine, they agree to perform one play at the airport. They choose "Hamlet." Elizabeth plays Gertrude, Clark plays Claudius, and the Prophet plays Hamlet which allows him to forgive both Clark and his mother.
