Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many years before the Crains arrived was Hill House built?

Answer: One hundred

Hill House was a hundred years old before the Crain Family moved in. One night, while the family slept, they were awakened by the sound of crying; it was one of the youngest children, scared by something in their room. Steven went to check it out and his sister, Nell, claimed that she saw 'the bent neck lady' again.

Their father arrives to take control of the situation, talking about dreams. Nell asked how long they had to live there, and her father said it was only until they finished the renovations and sold it off.

After he left the room, he checked in on the other kids and headed back to bed. Nell woke up once more in the night to find the bedroom door open. She never noticed the figure watching her from the shadows.
2. Steven Crain is an author of books pertaining to which subject?

Answer: Hauntings

Steven Crain, an accomplished author in his adult life, works by meeting with and interviewing those who have experienced traumatizing paranormal events in their lives. He meets with a woman who recounts a night she slept in her bedroom only to be awakened by the frightening ghost of her late husband.

He hears her out and thanks her for her story, suggesting that he may need to stay in the room to understand more. When he looks around her living room a bit later, he sees all of his books on a shelf.

The homeowner suggests how much she appreciates his works but Steven admits to her that he's never actually seen a ghost, and if she saw her husband, then it's more than he's ever seen.
3. Shirley works at which of these locations?

Answer: Mortuary

After his interview is complete, Steven gets a phone call from his sister, Nell. She remembers a night she spent in the living room of Hill House. Too afraid to stay with her brother in the bedroom, she stayed on the couch instead. Her mother slept on the floor next to her until she was, assuredly, asleep, before the kissed her goodnight and went to bed.

When Nell awoke moments later, a figure stood above her, looking her directly in the face. Nell tries to call her sister Shirley instead. Shirley, living in Massachusetts, is busy working at her funeral home so she doesn't pick up the phone.
4. Did the master key that Mr. Dudley gave to Shirley work on the red door?

Answer: No

Shirley tries to call Nell back after she's done with her client but she only gets a voicemail. She remembers back when her father was working on the house, back when the family lived there, and one of the caretakers, Mr. Dudley, found a key and gave it to her, claiming it to be the master key for the house. Shirley immediately took it upstairs and she and Nell, theorizing what could be behind the big, red door at the end of the upper floor hallway, put it to work.

Unfortunately, like the other keys in the house, it didn't work. Something was definitely in there, moving, but with the door being locked for years, the contents would remain a mystery.
5. Theo frequently wears which of these accessories?

Answer: Gloves

Shirley calls Steven as well, inquiring about Nell's whereabouts, but he's too busy to look into things. In fact, he's setting up his equipment at that very moment, preparing himself to spend a night in the bedroom at his new interviewee's house. In Boston, Theo Crain, the middle daughter, spends the evening at a club before taking a girl home for the night.

The girl, Trish, asks about her, but Theo rebuffs all questions and sends her on her way, placing gloves over her hands and suggesting that she leave quickly. On the way out, Trish meets Shirley, who shares the property with her sister.
6. Where does Hugh Crain live in the present day?

Answer: Florida

After Trish's departure, Theo goes out to have a drink with her sister on the porch and they talk about Nell, clearly a heated topic since Theo hasn't talked to Nell since Los Angeles. Theo is similarly unconcerned with Luke, who she says will show up when he needs money. In Jacksonville, Florida, Hugh Crain has a nightmare before waking up to receive Nell's call.

He answers and she asks him if he remembers the bent-neck lady. He does. Nell claims that she's back. She lies that she's at home in bed, but Hugh tells her to go to Steven's place while he gets a flight out from Orlando. Nell is actually at Hill House. Hugh packs his things immediately.
7. When the Crain Family fled from Hill House, who did they leave behind?

Answer: Olivia

One night, Hugh rushed into Steven's room to wake his son and make an escape from Hill House. As they hid behind the locked door from whatever was outside, Hugh informed the boy that they would need to run; he would carry him and Steven would have to keep his eyes closed no matter what.

They made it out the front door as it slammed behind them and with all of the kids in the car, they drove away, leaving whatever looked like their mother behind in Hill House. Steven looked up to an upper-floor window to see a figure there. In the present day, Hugh calls Steven to tell him to wait up for his sister.

He, of course, isn't at home to begin. He settles into the supposedly haunted bedroom for the night, making sure to stare up at the ceiling.
8. It appears that Steven had the exact same dream as all of his siblings, and all of them were awakened by it.

Answer: True

Theo dreams that Nell is dancing through the dilapidated ruin that is Hill House and he awakens from his sleep with a gasp. Little does he know, all of his siblings, also asleep, have all had the exact same experience. He lays back down and tries to go right back to sleep, but it appears that there's water dripping from the ceiling.

He stands on the bed to feel the moisture, but it appears to be nothing more than rain leaking. Steven debunks his interviewee's claims of a haunting in her house the next morning-- all but the alleged man hanging from her ceiling.

He reiterates that he's never seen a physical ghost, but either way, she saw what she wanted to see. It only takes Steven a glance down at his own book, one that was marred by difficulties that hurt his relationship with his siblings, before he decides to write the book for this new client.
9. After leaving Hill House, Hugh did which of the following?

Answer: Sealed it off

After Hugh left Hill House with the kids, he had to get to a lawyer. The tabloids started taking bites out of the Crain Family, especially on the back of Olivia's death. Hugh was fine with this, but he demanded that he keep the house in his name, locking it indefinitely and preventing anyone from entering.

The Dudleys cold stay on as caretakers, but the house would otherwise remain there to rot. Steven was there the whole time. On the way home, Steven calls his wife, Leigh, to let her know that Nell could be coming by on his father's urging. No one else in the family knows that they're not living together anymore.
10. Who does Steven find inside his apartment upon returning home?

Answer: Nell

On the drive home, Steven recalled being at the house in his youth, speaking to Clara Dudley, the religious-minded caretaker, about the parlour games-- Ouija boards, tarot cards-- in the house upon their arrival. The conversation ends when Olivia comes into the kitchen looking for Luke. Luke is, of course, hiding out in the treehouse that High built for him because he doesn't like the feeling of being in Hill House. When Steven gets home he finds Luke in his apartment stealing his things to sell them off. Luke departs with an apology and Steven heads into his place to find Nell standing inside.

He asks her a series of questions, but their father calls him before she can respond. Hugh tells him something concerning-- she's not in Los Angeles.

She was at Hill House. And she's dead. With his father still on the other end of the phone, Nell appears behind him and lets out a gruesome scream.
