Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, it's Christmas Eve and Barney enters the courthouse with the day's mail. He and Andy get several Christmas cards, and Barney gets one marked "personal". Who is his personal card from?

Answer: Hilda May

Barney got a bit embarrassed by his card...Hilda May wrote in the card, "Merry Christmas, Barney Parney Poo!"
2. Then the phone rings and it's Aunt Bee on the other end of the line. Andy talks to her about the Christmas party they've got planned for that night. Who's chosen to play Santa Claus?

Answer: Barney

Andy told Aunt Bee he had the do-dads for the tree and Elinor (Ellie) was bringing the eggnog.
3. Andy and Barney happen to have some prisoners in the jail at this time. Because of this, someone will have to miss the Christmas party and stay at the courthouse (where the jail is located). Andy decides to let the prisoners go until after Christmas so that everyone can be at the Christmas party. How many prisoners are there at this time?

Answer: five

Andy likens the jail to a school, and the prisoners to students, so he lets "class" out for Christmas!
4. Right after Andy gets the jail emptied, a certain Mayberry shopkeeper walks in wanting Andy to arrest Sam Muggins for moonshining. What is the name of this grumpy shopkeeper?

Answer: Ben Weaver

Floyd, of course, is the barber. Emmett didn't appear until the color episodes, as the owner of the Fix-it Shop. And Charlie owned a grocery store.
5. The shopkeeper leaves, after telling Andy he's going to keep an eye on the courthouse, to make certain that Andy keeps Sam in jail. Sam is really sad that he can't spend Christmas with his family, so Andy goes out and arrests them too, because they knew of the moonshining Sam was doing! Andy brings Sam's wife, Bess, and his two children to the jail. What are the names of the two children?

Answer: Effie and Billy

All the others were friends of Opie at one time or another.
6. When the shopkeeper sees Andy bring in the rest of Sam's family, he angrily heads over to the courthouse. As he has words with Andy over this, Barney, Aunt Bee, Ellie and Opie show up with the Christmas party fixings. What does Barney first carry into the courthouse?

Answer: The Christmas tree

Aunt Bee brought in the turkey, Ellie brought in the eggnog and Barney went back out for the presents and other things.
7. After the shopkeeper finishes talking with Andy about the prisoners, he leaves the courthouse, incensed. He doesn't go far, though. He goes around and peers into the courthouse through the jail window. It's evident that he'd like to join them at their party, but he's not known as the sentimental type. He decides he's got to get himself arrested, to be able to join the party but not lose face. What is the first thing he tries to get himself arrested?

Answer: Takes a bench from the front of the courthouse

Andy is going to arrest Ben, but Ellie talks him out of it because it's Christmas Eve, so Andy gives him back the bench and sends him on his way. Next, he parks his car in front of a fire hydrant and tears up the ticket Barney gives him. He refuses to pay the fine, but Ellie pays it for him, and he's sent on his way again.
8. Next, Andy starts playing a Christmas carol on his guitar, and Ellie sings a duet with him. What Christmas carol do they sing?

Answer: Away in the Manger

This scene is one of my favorite musical moments in "The Andy Griffith Show"!
9. As Andy and Ellie sing, we see that the shopkeeper is once again watching through the jail window. He loses his balance on the crate he'd been standing on, so Andy goes out to investigate the noise, and finds the shopkeeper there. Andy asks him what he's doing, and then finally figures out that the shopkeeper has been purposely trying to get arrested. What does Andy finally charge him with, so he can take the shopkeeper to jail?

Answer: Emptying trash cans on the city streets

Barney and Gomer once argued about illegal U-turns, and Ernest T. Bass was notorious for breaking windows! And Andy and Barney stopped a few speeders throughout the episodes.
10. Now that Andy has figured out the shopkeeper WANTS to be in jail, he decides he'll do just that. But first he takes the shopkeeper to his store to pick up a few things. These things end up being presents for everyone at the courthouse. What present does the shopkeeper give Opie?

Answer: Roller skates

Ben gave a baseball mitt to Billy, and a doll to Effie, as well as presents for the adults, too. As Andy then leads Ben to the other jail cell, Aunt Bee brings him a plate full of food and Ellie gives him a cup of eggnog. Merry Christmas!
