Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which country did teams begin Leg 9?

Answer: Kazakhstan

In the beginning of Leg 9, teams departed from the eighth Pit Stop of the race in Almaty, Kazakhstan's Old Square and were told to make their way to the airport to catch a flight to Moscow, the capital city of Russia. All of the teams took the same early morning flight. Once the four remaining teams made their way here, they would be able to take a taxi to their next route marker at the Krutitsy Dormition Cathedral where teams needed to light a candle as part of an Eastern Orthodox tradition to receive their next clue.
2. For the 'Boots' and 'Borscht' Detour tasks in Leg 9, teams needed to wear which clothing?

Answer: Military uniforms

After visiting Krutitsy's Dormition Cathedral, teams needed to travel by taxi to Kolosok Camp in Moscow Oblast, a decommissioned military base outside the city. Once here, teams found their Detour task, a choice between 'Boots' and 'Borscht'. In 'Boots', teams needed to follow a group of military officials and perform a march routine in sync to get their clue.

In 'Borscht', teams needed to head into a dining hall and serve seventy-five bowls of borscht to hungry soldiers. After this task, teams could receive their next clue. For both choices, teams would've needed to wear traditional military uniforms.
3. In Leg 9 in Russia, did any team choose to use the U-Turn?

Answer: No

After the Detour, teams would've had the option to utilize the second of only two U-Turns in the race, forcing another team to reel around and complete the Detour option they had not done, but because no one opted in, the mechanic was left by the wayside. This is the first season of the race not to have an active U-Turn on the entire course since its inception.
The four teams, upon completing the Detour, needed to head to the city of Zhukovsky for their next clue.
4. What did team members need to carry in the Road Block in Russia in Leg 9?

Answer: Bags of flour

In the city of Zhukovsky, teams needed to locate their next clue outside the Zhukovsky Bakery. This would be the next Road Block. For this task, one member (with a good back) needed to inflict pain upon themselves by boarding a nearby truck and carrying fifty large sacks of flour (weighing about fifty pounds each) into the bakery to the designated area. Once they properly stacked their flour, they would be able to receive their next clue from the Russian baker. Dallas, Ken, Nick, and Dan completed the task.
5. Which team placed first in Russia in Leg 9?

Answer: Toni and Dallas

After completing the Road Block, teams were told to make their way through the busy streets of Moscow to their ninth Pit Stop, Neskuchniy Garden. Here, Toni and Dallas broke Nick and Starr's long-running win streak by placing first for their first time. For the win, they ended up receiving a trip for two to the Dominican Republic. Andrew and Dan, who fell behind after confusion at the Detour, ended up placing last this leg only to discover that it was the last non-elimination leg of the race (of only two).
6. In Leg 10, all of the tasks were completed in which Russian city?

Answer: Moscow

Beginning Leg 10, teams were told to remain in Moscow and to locate their next route marker at Severnoye Tushino Park. Here, teams would need to specifically find the Komsomolets of Novosibirsk, a submarine docked in the nearby waters, and go inside to locate an actor who appeared in the film "The Hunt for Red October". This man would hand them their next clue.
7. During the Road Block task in Leg 10, team members needed to count out which of these?

Answer: Statues

Next, teams had to go to Park Iskusstv, also known as Fallen Monuments Park, where they would find their Road Block task. Here, one member of each team needed to count the amount of Lenin and Stalin statues found in said location. Then, they would need to go to a local bookstore to claim a copy of "The Master and Margarita". Using the numbers they found, they would need to find a corresponding page number where they would find the name of their next location, the old house of the book's author, Mikhail Bulgakov. Finally, that team member would need to go to the location, actually the Bulgakov Museum, to find their partner and their next clue. Nick, Dallas, Tina and Andrew finished this one.
8. The 'Ride the Lines' Detour option in Leg 10 required that teams ride which mode of transportation?

Answer: Trolleybus

After the Road Block was completed, teams headed by taxi to Sokolniki Park to find their Detour task in the hands of a woman holding a Shetland Pony. This was a choice between 'Ride the Lines' and 'Ride the Rails'. Nick and Starr chose 'Ride the Rails' in which teams needed to head underground to visit a number of different stops on different lines (first to buy a samosa, second to deliver it) before they could collect their next clue from a clue box.

The other teams completed 'Ride the Lines' which involved taking the above-ground trolley system to a keymaker (to collect a key) and then to Rizhskaya Station to open a locker containing the directions to their next clue box.
9. During Leg 10, one team completed a Speed Bump task involving which of these?

Answer: Dancing

During this leg, Andrew and Dan also needed to complete an additional task, a Speed Bump, before completing the Detour and checking in at the Pit Stop as they had placed last in the previous leg, a non-elimination leg. As a result, Andrew and Dan needed to learn a traditional Russian dance performed by local dancers and perform this routine in front of a choreographer.

When this trainer decided that their dance was adequate, they would receive their next clue. After all of these Detour and Speed Bump tasks, teams were given a picture of VDNKh Metro Station where their next clue box could be found.

This would lead them to the next Pit Stop.
10. Which team was eliminated from the race in Leg 10 (in Russia)?

Answer: Toni and Dallas

Teams made their way to the final Pit Stop of the race at VDNKh Park where Nick and Starr took a sixth first place victory for this race. For the win, they were rewarded with a trip for two, courtesy of Travelocity, to Anguilla. Toni and Dallas, while a strong team coming off a first place win in the previous leg, were unable to check in at the Pit Stop as they had misplaced their money and passports. Due to this, they would be unable to continue traveling and were eliminated from the race.
11. Departing from Russia in Leg 11, teams flew to what final destination city?

Answer: Portland

This being the final leg of the race, teams were told to leave the Pit Stop in VDNKh Park in Moscow, Russia and to fly around the world to the west coast of the United States, landing in Portland, Oregon. All three teams took the same flight path from Moscow to Frankfurt, Germany to Portland, Oregon, thousands of miles away. Landing here, teams were told to hop into taxis and make their way to the city of Newberg to find the Tilikum Retreat Center where their next clue box would be waiting for them.
12. In the final leg of the race in the United States, how many teams chose the 'Low & Wet' Detour option?

Answer: None

Arriving at Tilikum Retreat Center, teams were given their final Detour task for the race, 'High & Dry' and 'Low & Wet'. All three teams chose 'High & Dry' in which they needed to climb thirty feet up a tree onto a suspended log, then cross it and jump off the other end (harnessed in, of course) to reach half of a clue. Once both members successfully collected their pieces they could read them and head on to their next route marker.

In 'Low & Dry', teams would've needed to go to the nearby river and cross several floating logs to reach an island eight hundred feet away.
13. Teams completing the memory challenge in the final leg of the race (pertaining to facts about earlier legs) had to find how many pictures?

Answer: Ten

Teams made their way to the Bridge of the Gods at the Cascade Locks where both members needed to strap themselves into harnesses and descend down a zipline. At the bottom they needed to complete a memory challenge in which they needed to find pictures pertaining to Road Blocks, Detours, Route Infos, and Pit Stops of the previous ten legs of the race in over a hundred and fifty two clue boxes scattered around, each containing a different picture. Once teams completed this, they could head into Portland to collect their next clue at the Portland Building.
14. When teams were instructed to find a place where 'the magic is in the hole', what type of location did they find?

Answer: Doughnut shop

At the Portland Building, teams were told to cross the street to find the dinosaur statue at the Standard Plaza Building. Here, teams continued to Alder Street where their next clue was given by a man with a food cart selling foods from their last location on the race, Russia. Once they found this, they were told to go to a spot where 'the magic is in the hole'. Teams soon discovered that this was a local donut shop known as Voodoo Doughnut.

This would be where teams received their final clue.
15. Which team won "The Amazing Race 13"?

Answer: Nick and Starr

At Voodoo Doughnut, teams were told to make their way to the Finish Line, the Pittock Mansion in Portland's West Hills. After twenty-three days and forty thousand miles, Nick and Starr, who led the race for most of its run, became the official winners of "The Amazing Race 13" landing on the Finish Line in first place and winning the one million dollar prize together. Ken and Tina became the second place team while Andrew and Dan arrived in third.
