Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Departing from Austria at the start of Leg 7, teams were told to fly to what city in the United Arab Emirates?

Answer: Abu Dhabi

Teams departed from the Gloriette of Vienna, Austria's Schönbrunn Palace in the order which they arrived and, upon opening their clues, they were told to fly from Central Europe to the Middle East, specifically the city of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Upon arriving in this city, teams were told to take a taxi to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque where they would have to observe local customs to head inside and receive their next piece of Route Info.
2. During the 'Sew It Up' Detour task in Leg 7, what did teams need to create?

Answer: Fishing nets

After visiting the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, teams were informed that they would have to take a taxi to the Irani Souk for their next clue. Here, they found their Detour task for this leg of the race. Teams choosing to complete the 'Sew It Up' task were required to head down to the waterfront to find a station in the dhow harbour. Once there they needed to use the material provided to weave together a local fishing cage and, when the local fisherman approved of their creation, they would receive their next clue. Nicole and Travis and Jason and Amy went for this task.
3. What food did teams need to work with in the 'Sort It Out' Detour task in the U.A.E. in Leg 7?

Answer: Dates

Those opting not to complete 'Sew It Up' instead went with 'Sort It Out', a Detour task which required that teams head to the Al Mina Vegetable Market to create a platter of dates to replicate an existing model. Teams had to take their dates from an array of stands around the area. Leo and Jamal, Ally and Ashley, Nicky and Kim, and Tim and Marie finished this task and, when they were done, rushed off to catch a boat at the Al Bandar Marina departing once every thirty minutes for the nearby Yas Island.
4. Which of these was not required for the race track Road Block task completed in the U.A.E. in Leg 7?

Answer: Skydiving

Arriving at the dock at Yas Island, teams found a Road Block task. For this one, one member of each team was required to rappel two hundred feet from the roof of the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel to the ground, then suit up and hop into a Le Mans-style race car to do a lap on the Yas Circuit race course.

While racing they had to watch the signs on the track, identifying the name and time attributed to the course's record-holding lap: Sebastian Vettel, 1:40:279. The sign would be hidden amongst several other lap times on the course. Jason, Leo, Travis, Marie, Ally, and Kim completed this task.
5. Which team was last to arrive at the non-elimination Pit Stop in the United Arab Emirates in Leg 7?

Answer: Nicky and Kim

After the Road Block, teams were reunited and told to race through the circuit building nearby to find the Pit Stop situated on the winners' podium overlooking the race course. Leo and Jamal were the first to arrive and were greeted with the typical champagne spray victory celebration. For winning their first leg, the duo ended up receiving a trip for two to Paris courtesy of Travelocity.

The last team to arrive was Nicky and Kim, who fell behind at the marina. They were spared, however, since this was the first of only two non-elimination legs for the race.
6. At the start of Leg 8, teams needed to use which of these previously-acquired items to unlock their vehicles?

Answer: Viking coins

Leaving the Pit Stop at the Yas Marina Circuit in Leg 8, teams needed to locate their vehicles for this leg of the race in the parking garage. Their new Ford Explorers, however, would only work if they managed to unlock the doors using a code attributed to the Viking coins that they'd found in Leg 4 (in Norway). Once they figured out the right password-- 01479-- they could open their cars and carry on to the Al Khatim Desert where they had to ride dune buggies into the dunes (on a marked course) to locate their next clue box.
7. How many teams were U-Turned in Al Ain, U.A.E. in Leg 8 of the race?

Answer: Two

After finishing at the Al Khatim Desert, teams headed to the Al Ain Oasis at the Al Ain National Museum where a local tree climber pulled their clue down from a date palm tree. This was the Detour, a choice between 'Wedding Guests', in which teams had to prepare a traditional wedding dish, and 'Beauty Contest', in which teams had to select and dress up a camel for a local beauty contest. Nicole and Travis used their Express Pass to skip the task and subsequently U-Turned Leo and Jamal while Tim and Marie U-Turned Nicky and Kim. Tim and Marie, Jason and Amy, Leo and Jamal, and Nicky and Kim all completed 'Beauty Contest' while the last two teams had to do the opposite task as well.
8. The Speed Bump performed in Leg 8 (in Al Ain) involved water.

Answer: True

After the Detour, teams needed to drive themselves to the water park known as Wadi Adventures in Ain al-Fayda, Al Ain. Once there, Nicky and Kim found their Speed Bump task, required since they placed last in the previous leg of the race. For this task, they needed to hop into the wave pool and swim to the other side to climb a ladder and retrieve their next clue. Every minute and a half, however, they would be forced to endure six-foot-tall waves. Once the task was completed they could continue on in the race.
9. Who did not complete the Road Block task involving rafting in Leg 8 (in the U.A.E.)?

Answer: Travis

Arriving at Wadi Adventures, teams were given their Road Block task for this leg of the race. In this task, one member of each team had to complete a river rapid course-- the longest man-made course in the world-- while collecting three flags hanging at various points on the track. If they made it to the end without all three they would have to try again to claim the flags remaining. Nicole, Jason, Tim, Jamal, Ashley, and Nicky completed this wet and wild task.

After this they could drive to the Pit Stop.
10. Which team was eliminated in Al Ain, U.A.E. in Leg 8?

Answer: Nicky and Kim

After completing the Road Block in Leg 8, teams were told to drive to their next Pit Stop at the top of the mountain overlooking Al Ain-- Jebel Hafeet-- one of the highest points in the country. Here, at the Mercure Grand Hotel, they were able to check in. Nicole and Travis' Express Pass secured them the victory, their third in the race, winning them each a Ford Eco-Boost vehicle for use after the race.

In the end, Nicky and Kim were unable to overcome their U-Turn and Speed Bump and, after spending the leg at the back of the pack, they were the sixth team eliminated from the race.
