Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The woman who tells the story of Bly Manor does so at which of these events?

Answer: Wedding rehearsal

Arriving by taxi at a manor home in Northern California, a woman makes it just in time to attend a wedding rehearsal. The year is 2007, and as she takes her seat, one of the wedding guests is midway through a speech about life in marriage and the inevitability that, sadly, only half of all weddings end in divorce. Spinning the idea on its head, he explains that many people aim to watch their partners die-- after all, marriage is about spending a life together until the end.

He urges the engaged couple, jokingly, to go do drugs on a beach in Bali or something.

It's less tragic that way.
2. The woman who tells the story of Bly Manor claims that she can verify its veracity because she was there.

Answer: False

As the rehearsal dinner winds down, the wedding guests retire to the estate's comfortable rooms and the bride and groom are asked about the building. They only plan to stay a couple days at the location, mostly out of convenience. They have, after all, heard the stories.

The building used to be a convent back in the 1940s, and visitors have claimed to witness a ghostly nun crying in the corners of certain rooms. Other guests bring up their ghost stories-- another couple claimed to have a ghost in their hotel during a honeymoon in Ireland.

The woman who arrived late interjects with her own story though, though she claims it was a long one that belonged to someone she once knew. The others lean in; they have time enough and wine enough to listen. And she begins.
3. In which English county is Bly Manor located?

Answer: Essex

In London, England in 1987, a teacher responded to an advertisement by Lord Henry Wingrave seeking an au pair for a niece and nephew. A full-time position in Essex, the role implied she would be living-in as their guardian in their manor home. She met for the interview in London proper, stated her credentials (she taught fourth grade in the United States), and then seemed to suffer through the process. Wingrave himself, somewhat against her demeanour, started drinking during the interview and called out her lack of experience as an au pair.

The nephew, Miles, would require constant structure in his day-to-day life. Being sent home early from boarding school, he would also likely need discipline. When asked why he would be home early, Lord Wingrave avoided giving an answer.
4. Which of these other positions, occupied at Bly Manor, was live-in (besides the au pair role)?

Answer: Housekeeper

As for his niece, Flora, Lord Wingrave anticipated that she would need as much tutoring as Miles though she would be younger. All of these studies would be out in the country at Bly Manor, his family's countryhouse. She would reside there while the cook and groundskeeper remained in town.

There would be a live-in housekeeper, but the children would be her responsibility. Lord Wingrave interrupted the interview there though, and asked what the catch was. Normally, someone so young wouldn't spend the prime of their life applying to raise children for an extensive period; most au pairs are older.

She retorted, however, that in her six months in London, she'd seen his ad reappear and, somehow, despite the specifications, location, and role, no one had filled the position.

She reiterated his point-- 'what's the catch?'
5. According to Lord Wingrave, what was 'the catch' that kept people from taking on the au pair role at Bly Manor?

Answer: Imagination

Looking through the classifieds at a bar, the job applicant watched as Lord Wingrave came in after work looking for a drink. To extend an olive branch, and knowing she didn't get the position, she offered him a toast and the conversation took off from there.

She eventually worked up the nerve to ask what the actual catch was and he admitted that it was mostly 'imagination'. There was someone who filled the position earlier on, the previous summer, and the children liked her but she died on the grounds. Superstition kept people from signing on.

The story preceded the job. As for the applicant's catch, she simply couldn't be at home anymore. She loved the job and she took to them well, but she just couldn't help them all. Perhaps, she said, she could make the difference with just two children.

He gave her the job...at least until the end of the summer. She packed her things, took the blankets off the mirrors of her apartment, phoned her mother, and departed, taking only one glance back at the figure watching her leave.
6. Who was the first resident of Bly Manor that Dani encountered?

Answer: Flora

Bly Manor's valet, Owen, arrived in London to pick Ms. Clayton (Dani) up at her hostel and set out for Essex. Being raised in the town of Bly (not the manor), he escaped for a bit, studying to be a chef, and returned for family. He really only worked as a valet on Henry's request.

He never liked Bly; it'd always been a big gravity well. As they approached the laneway leading to Bly Manor, Dani asked to get out and walk the rest of the way. It was during her walk to the manor that Dani came across a young girl singing by the side of a pond. Sure enough, it was Flora.

The girl, informed of her new au pair's arrival, greeted her warmly and departed with her, leaving a small stick figurine by the waterside as they headed to the manor proper.

They united with Miles along the way and, with him, Dani met Hannah Grose. From there, they entered the house.
7. Miles gifted Dani a hairpiece that had which of the following on it?

Answer: Butterfly

Bly Manor, upon Dani's arrival, was exactly as described by Lord Wingrave-- "a great, good place"-- and she stepped into the foyer to marvel at its beauty...and receive a tour from Flora (everything was just "splendid"). Amongst the rooms, Dani discovered that the children had a bright classroom for their teachings, the house featured a statue garden, and the children no longer visited the wing of the house their parents once inhabited.

It was then that they showed her to her room and let her settle in...at least until Miles tried to peek into her door while she was changing.

She spotted him peeking and allowed him to come in, and when he did he stated how happy everyone was that she had arrived before handing her a butterfly hairpiece. Upon his exit, she locked her door. It wasn't long before Dani started pitching in.

After her first attempt at tea, she enjoyed dinner with Ms. Grose and the children while Owen headed home to take care of his mother. After his departure, Ms. Grose left the table, not feeling altogether ready for dinner.
8. On her first night in Bly Manor, Dani stayed in her room as per Flora's warning.

Answer: False

On her first evening, while Flora was having a bath, Dani was somewhat off-put but Flora's tendency to stare past her in conversation. When Flora noticed the butterfly hairpiece, she immediately soured, claiming it belonged to Ms. Jessel, the former governess. A minute later, as if finding affirmation, Flora suggested it was fine. As Flora headed off to get ready for bed, Dani looked in the mirror to find a figure watching her.
Dani went to tuck Miles in next. She asked him what happened to him at boarding school, but he refused to tell her. He insisted, however, that they were all very happy she was with them.
Returning to tuck Flora in, Dani found her finishing playing with her dollhouse. Suggesting Flora might need to learn to pick up her dolls, Dani located one under her dresser and was immediately rebuffed. That one, according to Flora, stayed there. There was one other thing-- Flora urged Dani never to leave her room at night. It was a rule she didn't follow.
On her first night, Dani headed downstairs to the kitchen to heat up a kettle for tea. The house, massive and creaky, begged to be explored, and every noise proved to pique her curiosity. She didn't notice the figure in the hall.
9. Who had been placing protective talismans throughout Bly Manor?

Answer: Flora

Flora knew Dani left her room on the first night, and she called her out on it. It was imperative, according to the girl, so that she wouldn't be seen by the lady there-- the Lady in the Lake. Walking out on the grounds, Miles scared Flora away with a spider but Dani embraced the creepy crawly, telling the boy that she was a lot braver than most people thought; it's why their uncle hired her. It became apparent from Miles' reaction that their uncle wasn't as attentive as they would have liked. Walking back to the manor, Dani let the children run ahead as she saw a figure watching their approach from a second-floor balcony. She waved; he didn't wave back.
Sitting for lunch, Dani dug into her meal as the gardener, Jamie, stepped in, notably not introducing herself. Dani asked about the possibility of a groundskeeper or repairman in the house, but the others denied that anyone had visited. No one could have gone up to that parapet unless through the house and in the closed wing.
Dani allowed herself to search the closed wing, investigating alone along the parapet. There, she found no sign of an individual but she did find another makeshift doll. Across the yard she spied a lit window in the chapel across the grounds and she headed there next, inside finding Ms. Grose. She showed the tiny doll and Ms. Grose explained that it had been two years since the children's parents passed away (and only a short time since Rebecca Jessel died). There was a man who distracted Rebecca during her time there. Upon his departure, Rebecca's mental condition deteriorated; she waded into the lake and drowned. Flora found her. In the weeks after, Flora created talismans to cope, claiming they kept her soul safe.
10. What did Dani find in the house after being freed from Flora's cupboard?

Answer: Footprints

As Dani tucked the children into bed that evening, she praised Flora's imagination, suggesting that she continue to use her talismans to protect herself and others, but not to risk danger by going out on the parapet. As she crossed the room to tend to Miles, she tripped over another talisman, this one previously under the dresser, before Miles entered the room asking for the electric fan normally kept in Flora's closet.

When Dani investigated, he and Flora tricked her, pushing her inside and locking her in.

As the children claimed to try and open the door, Dani panicked, sensing the spectre from her reflection in the room with her. Her claustrophobic bout lasted hours. The children unlocked the door an undisclosed amount of time later, claiming it was an accident.

They apologized as she headed to her room. Crossing the hall, Dani found footprints leading to the open front doors. She exited the manor, following them out to the foggy grounds, but the only thing she saw was Miles and Flora, both of them watching, still awake, from their bedroom windows.
