Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What location within Number 10 does Dorothy insist her office must be near?

Answer: Lavatory

Dorothy says that she, "could hear everything they (Cabinet members) said to each other privately when they popped out of Cabinet meetings for a pee. I was able to keep the last Prime Minister fully informed about all their little...foibles."
2. On Dorothy's impromptu plan of Number 10 that is laid out on the Cabinet Room table, which of these is the Lobby not between?

Answer: Ruler

"There's the Lobby there." says Jim.
"Where?" asks Bernard.
"Between the ash tray, the coffee cup and the saucer. There!"
3. According to Sir Humphrey, what is the current size of the Civil Service?

Answer: 680,000

"The whole Civil Service is on your side. 680,000 of us; Surely that's enough to be going on with?"
4. What colour is the door that connects the Cabinet Office with Number 10?

Answer: Green

This door was the only way from the Cabinet Office, where Sir Humphrey worked, into Number 10. Bernard had the locks changed and all the keys brought to him. It is referred to as a "Green Baize" door but it seems to be an ordinary wooden door without any baize on it anywhere.
5. Whilst Sir Humphrey is trying and failing to open the connecting door to Number 10, Bernard is on on the other side of the door, doing what?

Answer: Laughing

Bernard and Dorothy are on the other side of the door trying to stop themselves from sniggering at Sir Humphrey's discomfort...and failing!
6. Which of these is not a reason suggested by the Prime Minister for transferring some of Sir Humphrey's responsibilities to the Treasury?

Answer: The work is delegated

Jim suggests the lightening Sir Humphrey's load. Humphrey insists that the work is, "delegated" and that, "the Treasury already has too much...work" (by which he means too much power), upon which Jim says that the "lines of authority are unclear" and that it is "a serious anomaly."
7. What excuse does Bernard give for failing to prevent Sir Humphrey gaining entrance to the meeting between the Prime Minister and Sir Frank?

Answer: Sir Humphrey is bigger than he is

"Why did you allow Sir Humphrey to come in here when I explicitly told you not to?"
"Well, I couldn't stop him."
"Why not?"
"He's bigger than me!"
8. During their discussion, what does Sir Frank do that convinces Jim that he could do part of Sir Humphrey's job?

Answer: Gives a long and indecipherable speech

Sir Frank initially says that Sir Humphrey doesn't have "too much on his plate", is "tremendously able", and has "got it all under control", until he learns that he is in line to get some of Sir Humphrey's responsibilities. At this point he changes his tune and gives a long and indecipherable speech (much in the style of Sir Humphrey himself), to which Jim responds, "You could do part of Humphrey's job!"
9. Whose new security policy prevents Sir Humphrey from entering Number 10 through the front door?

Answer: Sir Humphrey

Sir Humphrey had previously said, "Everyone (wanting to be allowed through the front door of Number 10) must have their Number 10 pass or an appointment." Sir Humphrey only has a Cabinet Office pass so is refused admission.
10. At the end of the episode, who does Jim say will be head of the Civil Service?

Answer: It has not been decided

Sir Humphrey asks, "May one enquire who is to be head of the Home Civil Service?" And Jim responds, "Why, you Humphrey...Or possibly Frank...Or perhaps both, as now. I haven't decided yet."
