Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise first encountered the mirror universe, they quickly learned that nearly everyone that existed in their 'normal' universe had a twisted, evil counterpart in the alternate one. Four characters switched places with their alternates during a transporter malfunction; who were they?

Answer: Kirk, Uhura, Scotty and McCoy

"Mirror, Mirror" was originally broadcast on October 6th, 1967 during the second season of "Star Trek"'s three-year run. The title was a reference to the Brothers Grimm tale of Snow White and the evil queen's magic mirror.

The story began with the four members (Kirk, Uhura, Scotty and McCoy) returning from a failed attempt to secure dilithium mining rights from the Halkan Council. An ion storm interfered with the transport, and the four were switched with their counterparts from the alternate universe.

After (evil) Spock discovered the switch, he effected their return to their own universe. Before he went, Kirk tried to convince (evil) Spock that a Federation-like government might be more effective, and also informed him of the device called the Tantalus Field that allowed (evil) Kirk to maintain his power.

2. From the "TOS" episode "Mirror, Mirror": "Jim, I think I liked him with a beard better. It gave him character. Of course, almost any change would be a distinct improvement." About whom was McCoy speaking?

Answer: Spock

Spock's goatee was one of the methods used in the story to be able to differentiate between the characters from the 'normal' universe and the 'mirror' universe. A scratch received by Kirk was another example of this.

Question by reedy
3. In the mirror universe, the United Federation of Planets did not exist. What was the government called that the ISS Enterprise was part of and represented?

Answer: The Terran Empire

The 'I' in ISS stands for 'Imperial'. In the "Star Trek" timeline, the first departure from known history (as seen in "Star Trek: Enterprise") was when the Vulcans first witnessed Zefram Cochrane's warp flight in 2063. Rather than welcoming the Vulcans and establishing a relationship that would form the foundations of the United Federation of Planets, Cochrane instead killed the Vulcan envoy with a concealed weapon and the townspeople took over the Vulcan ship.

In the specially-made opening sequence for that "Enterprise" episode, a scene also showed an astronaut planting a Terran Empire flag on the moon, presumably meant to insinuate that it was the 1969 moon landing.

4. When the mirror universe Sisko was killed, which mirror universe counterpart led the Terran Rebellion?

Answer: Miles O'Brien

In the "DS9" episode "Through the Looking Glass", we found out that when Captain Sisko was killed by the Alliance, Miles "Smiley" O'Brien took control of the Terran Rebellion.

Smiley was incredibly helpful to the Rebellion, downloading the schematics from the Defiant to build their own mirror universe version.

Question by SandyRose1
5. In one episode of "Star Trek: Voyager", Captain Janeway was seen executing a Kyrian hero. Did this scene take place in the alternate universe?

Answer: No

"Star Trek: Voyager" did not visit the alternate universe. The scene being described was from the episode "Living Witness", which was set 700 years in Voyager's future.

The Kyrians had built a museum to remember the effects that the 'warship' Voyager had had on their planet. This was until a backup EMH module was activated, which started to reveal what had really happened.

Question by Daddy19
6. One of the crew of Voyager was present in the "Deep Space 9" mirror universe episode "Through the Looking Glass" as a member of the Terran Rebellion. Who?

Answer: Tuvok

Tuvok only played a minor role in the episode, but it was enough to indicate that Voyager never did get sent to the Delta Quadrant in the alternate universe. He was the only member of the Voyager crew seen in the mirror universe.

Question by reedy
7. In which of the first five live-action "Star Trek" series did the mirror universe feature without a crossover from the regular universe taking place?

Answer: Star Trek: Enterprise

"TNG" and "Voyager" did not feature the mirror universe at all and "DS9" made several visits to the mirror universe. However, the two-part episode "In a Mirror, Darkly" from "Star Trek: Enterprise" was the only series which was set entirely in the mirror universe without any characters visiting or being visited from 'our' universe.

Question by Daddy19
8. "In a Mirror, Darkly" featured the USS Defiant, which went back in time and crossed universes after disappearing in which original series episode?

Answer: "The Tholian Web"

The Defiant got caught in an a rift between dimensions, causing the crew to kill each other, with the ship phasing in and out of the Enterprise's dimension. Kirk was caught on the Reliant and trapped along with the ship. With a race called the Tholian Assembly preparing to destroy the Enterprise for being in their territory, the Defiant phased into view and the Enterprise beamed Kirk back and escaped. The Defiant disappeared, and was eventually found in the Mirror Universe by Archer's Enterprise. The episode was also notable in that Spock and McCoy, believing that Kirk was dead, watched a message that he'd recorded for them just in case.

Question by BaronTR
9. Which "Deep Space 9" character was never born in the mirror universe?

Answer: Jake Sisko

Jake's parents Benjamin and Jennifer were married in the mirror universe, but they separated without having any kids. In the episode "Shattered Mirror", Jennifer abducted Jake and took him to the mirror universe in order to lure Benjamin over as well.

Question by reedy
10. Through all of the mirror universe adventures, a symbol was seen that represents the empire. What did it look like?

Answer: Earth, impaled by a sword

Following the events of first contact with the Vulcans (2063), the Earth united under one government. In both realities, the original symbol used was that of the Earth (showing all continents) and a laurel leaf. The event of first contact itself, however, was very different - in the mirror universe, rather than welcoming the Vulcans, Cochrane and his people killed them and stole their ship.

Sometime between the founding of the United Earth (2150) and 2267, the symbol changed to that described in the question: the Earth (with only the Americas depicted), impaled by a sword.
