Simone came to town at Edmund's request. Edmund hired her to act as a go-between for Edmund and Mateo so as to try and throw off Proteus. Simone worked as a waitress at Sounds of Salsa to aid in Edmund's investigation of Proteus.

When Mateo first encountered Simone, he worried she was part of the drug ring Proteus orchestrated. Hayley and Mateo experienced harassment via numerous disguised calls from Proteus.

Chris Stamp was a newcomer to town and worked as a federal agent to help in the Proteus investigation. Through his connections, he was able to get Anna Devane promoted to be Chief of Police for Pine Valley. Just prior to this appointment, Anna had started reclaiming her policing proclivities after suffering from amnesia for years.

At the fifth Crystal Ball, artwork was to be auctioned off but instead a statue of Proteus was revealed. Shortly after this stunt at the party, Vanessa was revealed to be the drug lord Proteus. The Crystal Ball continued on after this shocker, concluding with Edmund and Brooke sharing a romantic dance.

Answer: Mateo Santos

Mateo was working closely with Edmund to track down Proteus. At this time, though, Mateo agreed to be a part of Proteus's empire only so Proteus would not harm his family. In January/2002, Vanessa tried to have Mateo killed by her chauffeur as she feared he would discover she was Proteus. However, this never happened so Vanessa wound up killing the chauffeur.

Answer: David Hayward

Vanessa continued fearing that she would be revealed as Proteus. To throw the authorities off her trail, she uploaded Proteus's files onto David's computer, culminating in his arrest. However, the charges were eventually dropped against David.

Answer: Rosie Wells

Vanessa wound up in a car accident and was taken to a hospital. While there, she claimed she was Rosie Wells, which was her stage name when she previously worked as a Hollywood actress. Despite Vanessa faking the personality, the doctors became convinced of her insanity.

Answer: Leo DuPres

Leo realized that his mother, Vanessa, was the druglord known as Proteus. He attempted to trap her by saying he would leave town with her. However, Vanessa learned of his duplicity and held him at gunpoint. She realized she could not shoot her own son and tried to flee town but her car crashed.

Answer: Maggie Stone

Maggie Stone, who was Vanessa's niece, was new to town and discovered that her aunt was the druglord Proteus. Vanessa captured her and tied her to a chair in an abandoned pump house. Despite being near death in the pump house, Maggie was rescued.

Answer: Trey Kenyon

Trey had just come to town and agreed to be Vanessa's attorney once she was revealed to be Proteus. At one point, Trey got Vanessa to escape from Oak Haven. It was later revealed that Trey was Vanessa's son with Richard Fields.
