Later, we see that Gary has put a picture of SpongeBob in his pack. When the picture falls out of the pack, the SpongeBob in the picture yells at Gary. :(

It seems that Gary feels that the best thing he can do is to go "Away". Where "Away" is we never really find out, only that it is a city.
