1. West Virginia saw its very "first outdoor advertisement" in what year?

Answer: 1908

At the beginning of the twentieth century, jobs for women were scarce. Since women were largely responsible for buying certain products, advertising was one of the few jobs that women were allowed to do without little or none opposition. West Virginia has become a recreation paradise, including trails for hiking, railways and ATVs. Rivers for white water rafting and two tourist railroads were also included for visitors to enjoy.

The 1991 horror classic, "The Silence of the Lambs" filmed some of its scenes in West Virginia.
2. How many miners were indicted after the battle between "miners and management"?

Answer: 1,200

In 2008, the deepest mine in the world was discovered to be located in South Africa and called the "Savuka Mine". Since the 18th century, this state has had a huge economy boost with salt mining. In 2005, there were 4,308 more residents in the state than there were in 2004.

Answer: 1862

West Virginia also had some historical firsts. In Grafton, Mother's Day was first celebrated. The first 4-H Camp in the U.S. was established in Jackson's Mill. In 1926, a federal prison that was only for women was opened, the first of its kind in the United States.

"The Coal House" was constructed in 1933. Located completely within the Appalachian Mountain range, West Virginia is the only state to have that honor. Sixteen West Virginia cities had a population of 10,000 or more residents in 2007, which included Charleston that had a population of over 53,000.

West Virginia has had two state slogans prior to 2008. The former slogans were "Open for Business" and "Almost Heaven". In 2008, the state slogan was "Wild and Wonderful".

Nevada was also admitted to the union during Lincoln's reign as president. In West Virginia, the first spa opened to the public in 1756. After seceding from a Virginia, West Virginia became the only state in the union to secede from a Confederate state.
8. In 1921, Sid Hatfield was murdered in West Virginia. What was Hatfield's occupation?

Answer: Police Chief

Hatfield was murdered on the McDowell County Courthouse steps in 1921. At just fourteen years of age, Chester Merriman enlisted to fight in World War I and was the youngest soldier to fight in that war. Launched by James Rumsey in 1787, the first steamboat set sail on the Potomac River.

"The West Virginia Hills", "This Is My West Virginia" and "West Virginia, My Home Sweet Home" were all established as the West Virginia state song. Considered by many as the "southern most northern state or the northern most southern state" based on where you happen to live, West Virginia was ranked as the lowest crime rate of any state in the country in 1997.

Virginia David Strathairn played Hatfield in a 1987 movie titled "Matewan". Stonewall Jackson, Don Knotts, Peter Marshall, Kathy Mattea, and Mary Lou Retton are perhaps the most famous West Virginia natives. The largest cave in West Virginia is the Organ Cave and is also the third largest cave in the United States.
