Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first season episode of "The Twilight Zone" entitled "Judgment Night", Carl Lanser was a passenger on a British passenger liner in 1942. At the end of the story, he comes to realize that he has been damned for eternity to relive the sinking of the very vessel on which he found himself a passenger. What was Carl's sin that condemned him to perpetual terror?

Answer: He was the German U-Boat captain that had sunk the passenger ship.

"Judgment Night" was just one a several episodes of the "The Twilight Zone" where the villain changes places with the victim. It was also the first of many World War II themed episodes.

Jerusalem born TV and motion picture actor, Nehemiah Persoff played the part of Captain Lieutenant Carl Lanser. This episode also featured the talents of James Franciscus and Patrick Macnee.

This episode premiered on 4 December 1959.
2. One of "The Twilight Zone" hour-long episodes, rarely seen in syndication, "Printer's Devil" tells the Faustian story of a failing small town newspaper publisher, Douglas Winter, who was despondent over his company's debt. Most of his employees had quit their positions, which left the jobs of reporting, printing and editing entirely on his shoulders. After Mr. Winter considers taking his own life, he meets Mr. Smith (aka Lucifer Satan) who steps up to take the job of the reporter and the "Linotype" he offered to pay off all of the newspaper's debts, in exchange for Mr. Winter's soul. After Mr. Smith was given the job, all went well for the newspaper due to the new reporter's ability to get the scoop on big local stories before they happened. How was he able to do this?

Answer: Whatever Smith put in the Linotype would come true.

It is revealed that Mr. Smith had made "adjustments" to the Linotype so that any story that was printed would come to fruition. He crossed the line when he wrote a story telling of the death of Mr. Winter's girlfriend in a car accident. Mr. Winter changed the story by placing Mr. Smith behind the wheel of the accident vehicle. As a result, he saved his sweetheart's life and Mr. Smith's body disappeared from the car, thereby cancelling their contract. Mr. Winter got rid of the cursed Linotype and returned to publishing his paper the old fashioned way.

According to my FunTrivia resources, namely 'goalkeeper', a "Linotype" is a mechanical typesetter, that allows the operator to key in the information, and have the machine set it in lines -- hence "Line o ' Type". Thanks goalkeeper!

"Twilight Zone" regular, Burgess Meredith played Lucifer Satan/Mr. Smith. Actor Robert Sterling ("Return to Peyton Place", "Topper", and "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea") took the role of Douglas Winter.

This episode premiered on 28 February 1963.
3. In "The Howling Man", the 4 November 1960 episode of "The Twilight Zone", actor H.M. Wynant played the character David Ellington, a man who traveled in Post WWI Europe and encountered Brother Jerome, a monk. Brother Jerome tells David that he had "The Howling Man" (aka the Devil) locked in a cell in his Hermitage. Playing Jerome, who was the horror film (and more) veteran actor, who once used the stage name, "John Peter Richmond"?

Answer: John Carradine

In this Pandora like tale, the protagonist David Ellington could not leave well enough alone and removed the only thing that held the Howling Man in his cell,. After Satan escaped, David realizes what he had done and spent the following decades chasing the Devil through WWII and the near outbreak of WWIII. After he recaptured Satan, another non-believer inadvertently let the Howling Man out of his binds.

Originally, the script had called for a large Cross to act as the bar that held the cell door shut, but producers did not want to make any specific religious statement or stir up complaints from objecting viewers.

John Carradine would appear in a 1986 "Twilight Zone" episode with his son, Robert Carradine.
4. Switching directions, "The Twilight Zone" episode, "One for the Angels" stars popular TV actor and "Zone" regular, Ed Wynn as a sidewalk peddler named Lou Bookman. One day, Lou was approached by the angel Death, who was kind enough to let the salesman know that he was to die at midnight. Lou protested telling Death that his life work was not complete and requested a bit more time to make a last big sales pitch, "one for the angels". As soon as Death agreed, Lou told him that he was going to quit his job, with the thought that he had fooled Death and could live forever. Instead, Death told him that he would make "other arrangements", intending to escort another soul to the great beyond. Who was the replacement victim?

Answer: A little girl

As soon as Death told Lou that he had picked another victim, a little neighborhood girl and friend of Lou was struck by a car. Lou begged Death to let him take the girl's place, but Death said it was too late; he would have to take the girl's soul by midnight. In the meantime, Lou commenced in his sales pitch showing Death his large assortment of items in his sales case. Death is so wrapped up in the pitch that he misses his midnight deadline. Lou was quite pleased with his sales pitch, which Dead agreed was "one for the angels". Lou was happy to accompany Death to the afterlife, "up there". One of the few episodes of "The Twilight Zone" with a somewhat happy ending.

This was the second episode and premiered on 9 October 1959.
5. In the sixth episode of "The Twilight Zone", called "Escape Clause", which premiered on 6 November 1959, a loser named Walter Bedeker sold his soul to the devil and thereby gained immortality. After he had survived a few otherwise fatal stunts, one of which caused the death of someone who tried to save his life, Walter confessed to the murder with the thought that he would have been executed in the electric chair. Of course, he knew that he would survive the attempted execution. Unfortunately, his lawyer was able to negotiate of more lenient sentence... life in prison. Who was the person who was killed as a result of his exhibition of invincibility?

Answer: Ethel Bedeker, his wife.

Not wanting to spend his eternal life locked up in prison, he opted to take the "Escape Clause" included in his Satanic contract, then almost immediately dropped dead from a heart attack.
6. "The Twilight Zone" visited the battlefields of the American Civil War in the episode called "Still Valley" on 24 November 1961. In this episode, two Confederate soldiers were scouting a valley where Union soldiers were heard marching. One of the soldiers, Sgt. Paradine, sneaked down to the town and found the Union soldiers, but something was just not right with them. Do you know what was strange about these Yankee soldiers?

Answer: They were standing motionless, frozen in place.

Sgt. Paradine also came across a crazy old man named Teague, a Southerner and self-described "Witchman" who told the sergeant that he had put a Satanic spell on the Unionists. Teague says that he was dying and gave a spell book to Sgt. Paradine so that he could freeze the entire Union Army in their tracks.

Unfortunately, using the spells would require being allied with Satan. Sgt. Paradine brought the book to his superior and told him what happened. He was encouraged to use the spells to help the South win the war.

However, Sgt. Paradine discovered that in order to use the spells he not only had to praise Satan, but would also have to renounce God. Considering this, Sgt. Paradine threw the spell book into a fire. A short time later, Sgt. Paradine was told that he would be heading to fight a battle in Gettysburg.
7. "A Nice Place to Visit" is the title of "The Twilight Zone" that premiered on 15 April 1960. In this story, criminal Henry "Rocky" Valentine robbed a pawnshop, during which he killed the nightwatchman. As he was getting away, he was hit by a police officer's bullet, then awoke and found himself in the company of a large pleasant man with white hair and wearing an all-white suit. The large man advised Rocky that he would be his guide and would supply him with anything he wanted. They went to a casino where Rocky has incredible luck with the ladies and won every game he played, every time. What in the DICKENS was the name of the afterlife guide? I have GREAT EXPECTATIONS that you will know this!

Answer: Pip

Rocky was so bored of getting everything that he wanted in life without any effort or challenge, that he told Pip that he didn't belong in Heaven; he wanted to go to the "Other Place". Pip laughs and informed Rocky that he was in THE OTHER PLACE (One of early American television's euphemisms for "Hell").

Was it just coincidence that an episode about Hell would premier on Tax Day 1960?
8. "The Last Rites of Jeff Myrtlebank" episode of "The Twilight Zone" told the story of Jeff Myrtlebank, who came back to life during his own funeral. The town doctor opined that he must have suffered some type of ailment, but the townsfolk knew better. What did they think happened to Jeff Myrtlebank?

Answer: He was possesed by a demon.

After Jeff Myrtlebank convinced the townsfolk that he wasn't a "Haint" (roving demon), their initial suspicions were found to be true when, in the final scene, Jeff pulls out a tobacco pipe and it lights up by itself.

This episode premiered on 23 February 1962. James Best played the part of Jeff Myrtlebank.
9. "The Hunt" was the title of a third season episode of "The Twilight Zone". In this episode, an elderly man named Hyder Simpson (played by Arthur Hunnicutt) went out raccoon hunting with his trusty hound, Rip. Rip chases a 'coon through a pond and when he didn't come up, Mr. Simpson dove in after him. The next thing they knew, they awoke by the side of the pond. When they got home, it seemed that nobody could see them. Worse yet, plans were being made for Mr. Simpson's funeral. Mr. Simpson and Rip walked along a road that he didn't recognize and came upon a man who stood by a gate and asked him if he was St. Peter. The man told Mr. Simpson that he was only the gatekeeper and advised Mr. Simpson that he could enter Elysian Fields, but that dog could not. Mr. Simpson said that any place that won't allow dogs was too fancy for him, so he and Rip walked away. Why was Rip not allowed in Elysian Fields?

Answer: Dogs could smell the brimstones of Hell

Continuing down the road, Mr. Simpson and Rip came upon an Angel who was looking for them. It turns out this Angel actually WAS the gatekeeper of Heaven, and the man that they had met earlier had tried to trick them. Mr. Simpson told the Angel that it would be "a helluva place without Rip!" The angel replied "Mr. Simpson, you ain't far wrong-that is Hell!", and told him that dogs can smell the brimstone. He added that even the Devil couldn't fool a dog.

Mr. Simpson was told that his dog would be allowed and there was plenty of Raccoon hunting to enjoy for eternity. Furthermore, Mrs. Simpson would be following along shortly. Another Happy Ending in..."The Twilight Zone".

This episode premiered on 26 January 1962.
10. Red haired comedienne Carol Burnett starred as Agnes Grep in "The Twilight Zone" episode, "Cavender is Coming". This is another story of an angel (Jesse White as Cavender) who was trying to get his wings by helping an unfortunate mortal. In this story, Agnes Grep was a clumsy theater hostess, who lived in a low rent neighborhood, where she lived a difficult life, but was quite popular with the neighborhood denizens. Cavender tried to help Agnes by making her wealthy and gave her a large mansion to live in. As you would expect, Agnes was unhappy in her new upper class life and wanted to go back to the way things were. The question is, what was unique about this episode when compared to all of the other episodes of..."The Twilight Zone"?

Answer: It contained an audio laugh track.

This familiar sounding story, first broadcast 25 May 1962 during the same season as the similar episode entitled "Mr. Bevis", which had originally been produced as a pilot episode of a comedy series about the angel Cavender. Recent syndicated airings on satellite TV stations and DVD releases have had the laugh track audio removed, although I recall it distinctly from local syndicated TV broadcasts in the 1970s-1980s.

As in the "Mr. Bevis" story, the angel ended up getting his wings due to the fact that his client had been helped after all by having realized how wonderful her simple life had really been, in the first place.

None of "The Twilight Zone" episodes from the initial series had been filmed in color. However, there were six episodes in the second season that were videotaped, with poor results. In the third season, there actually was one partially nostalgically silent episode, "Once Upon a Time", starring silent film star Buster Keaton.
