Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the substance that was used to insulate the hull of the NX-01 Enterprise while they were searching for the Xindi in the Delphic Expanse?

Answer: Trellium-D

The Delphic Expanse was a dangerous region of space, filled with various spatial anomalies. The residents of the expanse had realised that by putting Trellium-D on the hull, the effects of the anomalies could be reduced.

Question by Daddy19
2. What was that handheld device called that could scan, record and analyze data?

Answer: Tricorder

The tricorder was prevalent in all of the different "Trek" series, although in "ENT" they were referred to as hand scanners. From "TOS" through to "VOY", though, the tricorder was the tool that just could not be done without. The original tricorder as seen in "TOS" was designed by Wah Ming Chang.

3. In the "DS9" episode "Trials and Tribble-ations", Dulmur and Lucsly arrived on the station to interview Captain Sisko about his recent trip to the past. Which department did they work for?

Answer: Temporal Investigations

The role of the Department of Temporal Investigations was to try and ensure that any time travel had not contaminated the timeline and altered history. Dulmur and Lucsly's visit was prompted by Arne Darvin's use of the Bajoran Orb of Time to try and kill Captain Kirk.

The Memory-Alpha.org website notes that it was intended that Dulmur and Lucsly were intended to be anagrams of the main characters in "The X-Files", Mulder and Scully, however the spelling is slightly wrong!

Question by Daddy19
4. (T is for Trip and T'Pol) In the linked episodes, "Demons" and "Terra Prime," we find out that Trip and T'Pol have a baby. What was unusual about this baby ("ENT")?

Answer: Their baby was a clone.

A strongly xenophobic terrorist group, Terra Prime had cloned the baby from the DNA of Trip and T'Pol to use in their scheme to force all non-humans to leave the earth system or Starfleet Command would be destroyed. The baby was used by the leader of Terra Prime as of how human genetic destiny could be contaminated if humans and aliens coexisted.

Doctor Phlox mentions the baby has T'Pol's ears and Trip's eyes. Sadly, the baby got sick and died due to defects in the cloning technique. Before the baby died, it was T'Pol who suggested she be named Elizabeth after Trip's sister who had died in the Xindi attack on Earth.

5. In the "TNG" episode "Second Chances" we learned that in the past a transporter malfunction had created a duplicate of then Lieutenant Riker. What name did this Riker copy go by?

Answer: Tom

Riker's full name was William Thomas Riker. In order to distinguish himself from his double, the 'other' Riker chose to go by his middle name. Unfortunately, Tom Riker did not have the same fortune in his career that Will Riker did. He eventually left Starfleet to join the Maquis.

6. In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Tuvix," a transporter accident occurred resulting in the creation of a completely new individual that was a merging of Tuvok, Neelix, and an unusual orchid. It took The Doctor and Ensign Kim some time to discover a way to restore Tuvok and Neelix. Would it be true to say that after becoming friends with the crew and sensing their sorrow at the loss of their two friends, Tuvix was willing to undergo this procedure?

Answer: No

It is not true because Tuvix upon learning it would be possible to separate Tuvok and Neelix, he clearly stated he did not want to die. Tuvix strongly believed he had rights and the right to live was one of them. He expressed this to Captain Janeway and stated this procedure would be like an execution for him.

On a side note, if you do not remember what ultimately happened to Tuvix, hopefully you will be motivated to rewatch this disturbing episode.

7. The Federation called it Deep Space Nine. During the Cardassian Occupation and again during the war with the Dominion, it was known as something else. What was its name?

Although Cardassian in origin, Major Kira commented that Terok Nor was built by Bajoran slaves during the occupation. Prior to Cardassian withdrawal, Gul Dukat, as prefect, oversaw the Cardassian administration of the Bajoran occupation. The station was also used as an ore processing centre. Again, this work was done by Bajorans in unbearably hot conditions.
