Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Kate and Allie" and "3rd Rock from the Sun"

Answer: Jane Curtin

Jane Curtin became a household name as part of the original "Not Ready for Prime Time Players" on "Saturday Night Live" beginning on October 11, 1975. She went on to play Allie Lowell on "Kate and Allie" from 1984 to 1989, about two divorcees and their kids moving in together. From 1996 through 2001, Curtin was Dr. Mary Albright on "3rd Rock from the Sun" which featured aliens sent to Earth to learn our customs.
2. "The Middle" and "Everybody Loves Raymond"

Answer: Patricia Heaton

Patricia Heaton had appeared on a number of television shows before coming to fame as Debra Barone on "Everybody Loves Raymond" from 1996 to 2005. She was the long-suffering wife of sportswriter Ray Barone (Ray Romano) who lived across the street from his parents. Beginning in 2009, Heaton played Frankie Heck, wife and mother of a somewhat dysfunctional family living in Orson, Indiana.

The show's last episode was in 2018.
3. "2 Broke Girls" and "The Neighborhood"

Answer: Beth Behrs

Blonde actress Beth Behrs played Caroline Channing, wealthy daughter whose father was arrested after being found guilty of a Ponzi scheme on "2 Broke Girls". She was reduced to finding a job as a waitress and living in a run-down apartment with her fellow waitress Max.

The show aired from 2011 until 2017. The following year, 2018, Beth moved to "The Neighborhood", a predominately black L.A. neighborhood where she (now called Gemma) lives with her very white husband and son.
4. "Burn Notice" and "Cagney & Lacey"

Answer: Sharon Gless

Who still remembers the days of the female cops known as "Cagney and Lacey"? Sharon Gless was Christine Cagney, the attractive, single career woman, opposite the level-headed, married Mary Beth Lacey played by Tyne Daly. The show was on from 1981 to 1988.

As the years passed and Sharon Gless aged (as we all must), she went on to play the mother of the protagonist and former spy Michael Weston on "Burn Notice" from 2007 to 2013.
5. "The West Wing" and "Mom"

Answer: Allison Janney

Versatile actress Allison Janney has appeared in films and has already won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "I, Tonya". Prior to that, her breakout role was as White House Press Secretary C.J. Cregg on "The West Wing" from 1999 to 2006. She was a strong female role model in a male-dominated setting.

In a complete change of pace, Janney plays recovering alcoholic Bonnie Plunkett, who lives with her formerly alcoholic daughter Christy, on the sitcom "Mom" which began in 2013.
6. "Will and Grace" and "The Mysteries of Laura"

Answer: Debra Messing

Before its recent, unfortunate reboot, Debra Messing starred in "Will and Grace" from 1998 to 2006. The show was ground-breaking at the time, with interior decorator Grace Adler (Messing) living with her gay lawyer friend, Will Truman. The show helped to bring homosexuality to mainstream America.

She was far less successful as divorced NYC homicide detective Laura Diamond on "The Mysteries of Laura" which aired from 2014 to 2016.
7. "Maude" and "Mama's Family"

Answer: Rue McClanahan

Many of us are familiar with Rue McClanahan (1934-2010) as the sexy, southern belle Blanche Devereaux on "The Golden Girls". However, long before that iconic show, beginning in 1972 Rue played Vivian Harmon, next door neighbor to Maude Findlay (Bea Arthur) on "Maude".

In 1983 McClanahan played Aunt Fran Crowley on "Mama's Family". Aunt Fran was the sister of protagonist Thelma Harper and the aunt of Ellen Harper Jackson, played by future 'Golden Girl', Betty White!
8. "The Crazy Ones" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"

Answer: Sarah Michelle Geller

Most of us know Sarah Michelle Geller as that foe of vampires, demons and other evil-doers, Buffy Summers. Buffy and her friends fought the forces of darkness in Sunnydale on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". The hit fantasy drama ran from 1997 to 2003. On a less successful note, Geller starred as Sydney Roberts, the daughter of advertising genius Simon Roberts, played by Robin Williams in his last TV role.

The show aired from 2013 to 2014.
9. "9-1-1" and "Ghost Whisperer"

Answer: Jennifer Love Hewitt

Has Jennifer Love Hewitt been on almost every television show in the last twenty years? It certainly seems so. After her first appearance in "Party of Five", she has been on too many programs to list. I picked one of the most current shows, that is "9-1-1" where she plays Maggie Kendall, a formerly abused wife who now answers emergency calls. Before that, Jennifer Love was Melinda Gordon who spoke to ghosts to help them find their way on "Ghost Whisperer" from 2005 to 2010.
10. "Friends" and "Cougar Town"

Answer: Courteney Cox

Who could forget Monica Geller, the neat-freak who ate her Tic Tacs in even numbers? Courteney Cox (one time Arquette) played one of the six "Friends" who hung out at Central Perk and represented upscale twenty-somethings from 1994 to 2004. Cox appeared on a number of TV shows until she landed in "Cougar Town" from 2009 to 2015. On this show she played Jules Cobb, a divorced mother of a teenage son, both experiencing life's trials and tribulations in Gulfhaven, Florida.
11. "Providence" and "CSI: NY"

Answer: Melina Kanakaredes

Melina Kanakaredes appeared on a number of television shows, including the soap opera "Guiding Light" before landing in "Providence" in 1999. On the show, Melina plays Hollywood plastic surgeon Dr. Sydney Hansen who moves back to Rhode Island to help her family (and her mother's ghost). Next up, we find Kanakaredes, now in New York as Stella Bonasera, helping to solve crimes forensically on "CSI: NY" from 2004 through 2013.
12. "Hot in Cleveland" and "Frasier"

Answer: Jane Leeves

I have liked Jane Leeves from the first time I saw her on a little known show called "Throb" in 1986. It was not until seven years later, in 1993, that she appeared in her breakout role, as physical therapist Daphne Moon from Manchester, on "Frasier".

She helped Martin Crane with his injured hip, and wound up marrying Niles to everyone's satisfaction. From 2010 to 2015 she portrayed Joy Scroggs, one of three best friends who are traveling to Paris and wind up in Cleveland.
13. "Grey's Anatomy" and "Killing Eve"

Answer: Sandra Oh

Beginning in 2005, and for the next ten years, Sandra Oh played Dr. Cristina Yang on Shonda Rimes' show "Grey's Anatomy". First a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital, Dr. Yang worked her way up to resident and, finally, cardiothoracic surgical fellow, experiencing all sorts of relationships along the way.

In 2018 Sandra gave up her scrubs to become security services operative Eve Polastri on the action drama "Killing Eve" from 2018.
14. "Veronica Mars" and "The Good Place"

Answer: Kristen Bell

Kristen Bell may be queen of the cult shows, besides having been a princess in the movie "Frozen", and Elle Bishop on "Heroes". In 2004, after the murder of her friend, and her father losing his job as Sheriff in Neptune, California, high school (and later college) student Veronica Mars becomes a teenage sleuth with the help of some new friends and her dad's new detective agency. On "The Good Place", from 2016, she plays Eleanor who is trying to find her way after death.
15. "The Good Fight" and "Cybill"

Answer: Christine Baranski

Christine Baranski is an amazingly versatile actress who can go from high drama to hilarious comedy without batting an eye. This is shown in her portrayal of Leonard Hofstadter's mother on "The Big Bang Theory", as well as in her role of Maryann Thorpe, a wealthy, alcoholic divorcee and best friend of "Cybill" (1995-1998). On the drama "The Good Fight", from 2017, she plays affluent attorney Diane Lockhart who loses everything and must start all over again.
