Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the excavation?

Answer: Ecuador

They were excavating in the Ecuadorian Highlands. Roosevelt was trying to rescue artifacts before an oil company could run their pipeline through the area.
2. According to myth, anyone who disturbed the Amaru would be devoured by the spirit of what?

Answer: jaguar

The local workers were even more frightened when Roosevelt died from what appeared to be an animal attack.
3. Where was Dr. Lewton attacked and killed?

Answer: at his car

The car wouldn't start, so he was leaning over the engine trying to fix it when the spirit attacked him from behind. As a nice little detail, his car was a jaguar, and the camera lingered a few times on the small silver jaguar adorning the hood of the car!
4. What did Scully tell the officer to label the evidence found at the scene of Dr. Lewton's death?

Answer: partial rat body part

She pulled the tail and rear end of a rat out of the engine compartment and dropped it in an evidence bag, telling the officer to label it. When he asked "as what?", she said "partial rat body part" as though it should have been obvious!
5. What was left in a tree near the scene of Dr. Lewton's death?

Answer: intestines

Scully and Mulder were walking through the woods discussing the case and Mulder felt some liquid hit his face. He commented that the rain seemed to be starting back up, but Scully looked at his face, wiped the drop of blood off, and said, "I don't think so, Mulder." They both looked up to see the entrails wrapped around a branch, and Mulder, trying to wipe any remaining blood off his face, asked "What the hell is that?"
6. After calling Scully about her distressing meeting with Bilac, Mona called Scully. As she was waiting for Mulder to come pick her up at the museum, Mona followed strange noises to where?

Answer: the bathroom

It sounded like tribal drumming, and she followed the sound to the women's restroom. All the toilet lids were bouncing up and down, making rhythmic tapping noises. Mona leaned down to lift the lid off of one of the toilets, and out swarmed a bunch of rats!
7. What killed Mona's dog, Sugar?

Answer: rat poison

Upon examination, it was determined that Sugar had eaten a cat, which had eaten a rat, which had eaten rat poison. Sugar was thereby poisoned to death.
8. What did Mulder say to Scully as they prepared to enter the steam pipe tunnels?

Answer: "Ladies first."

He wanted to get out of going first, but Scully gave him a look and shook her head, so he led the way after all.
9. Scully was attacked by a cat in the steam pipe tunnels.

Answer: true

The agents followed a rat to a pile of bodies. Then they saw a cat and followed it, and were led to a mass of feral cats, one of which attacked Scully, clawing and biting her face. The agents escaped into a room with a vent, where they found Bilac's body. Just as the cats clawed through the door to the room, Scully and Mulder crawled to safety through the vent into the museum.

The medical examiner ended up ruling all the deaths the result of animal attacks, though the cats were nowhere to be found.
10. Did the bones stay at the museum?

Answer: no

After five deaths, Bilac's letters were finally taken seriously, and the artifact was sent back to Ecuador and buried by the locals under the watchful (and cat-like) eyes of the shaman.
