Child psychologist Mike Painter appears on television to discuss his new book. The host brings up a touchy subject-- five kids, including his own brother, Eddie, were killed in Ohio, in the late 1980s. His identical twin brother was the only one who was never found.

He hasn't even returned to Iron Hill since then. Things get uncomfortable when the host brings out a phone; on the other end is a twelve-year-old boy with issues of his own, and Mike is somewhat forced to take the call. On the other end of the line, the boy laughs and the crackle of a television can be heard.

The boy asks 'when are you going to come home?' before Mike hangs up. The cameras are still turned to him; the host stares at him, almost vacantly, and it seems that everyone is frozen. The phone rings.

Answer: Iron Hill

Mike wakes up in bed and gets ready for his day, leaving his nice home and driving out to the countryside; there's an old house on the edge of a cornfield. Outside, Marla and Katie look over a dead goldfinch on the ground. Mike walks up and surprises Marla who, after all this time, is looking at her son.
They head inside and discuss the goings-on. Mike notices that there are no pictures of himself or Eddie around, or of their father. Katie's accomplishments cover the fridge.
Marla asks why he came back. She's happy to see him, but she doesn't understand. She doesn't want him to come back simply to pry into the murders. Someone always does.

Answer: Their teeth

Mike ends up heading to the police station and runs into an old friend, Gary, with whom he wants to have a quick word. They talk about the past a bit and Gary tells him that things are quiet in Iron Hills. The worst crimes they get are drunk driving and someone breaking into houses without stealing anything. Mike tells him why he's come along: he wants to take a look at the files from the murders in 1980. Gary insists that over twenty-eight years, they've tried to keep things quiet.

They pulled the kids out of the trees in the woods; they were missing their teeth. Mike wants to write a book about the murders. Gary is concerned that the book could be disrespectful.

He decides he'll give the files, but only if Mike comes to dinner at his place and has a sit-down with his kid.

Mike isn't really thrilled to be there; everyone at the dinner, including Gary and his wife, Jessica, get involved in discussing why Iron Hill is no longer a booming town. Gary's son, Dane, interrupts to argue about his sister hogging the television, and when he leaves Mike talks about how strange they all were when they were kids. Mike and Eddie in particular were a bit weird; they ended up creating their own kingdom in which they were the kings.

They would spend weekends watching hours and hours of television, and things got weird. Mike heads to the bathroom and finds Gary and Jessica's daughter, Katie, standing in front of a television.

She doesn't reveal what she was watching...but it's gone.

Mike returns to the table and immediately brings up 'Candle Cove', the show that was on TV in 1988 for only two months. Jessica says she would never talk to her kids about it, but Katie says she was watching it. The show used to feature these puppets, and Jessica used to have recurring nightmares of them constantly screaming. Jawbone, Mike remembers, was one of the characters; he was a skeleton in a robe and black hat who would chase around Pirate Percy. Mike has horrible memories of the show. Partway through the discussion, Mike decides to leave. He ends up walking home, striding into the fields outside of town closer to sunrise.

He remembers his brother, Eddie, fighting bullies, breaking his finger before all was said and done. That night, when he found him crying in the living room, the television turned on on its own. 'Candle Cove' was on it.

Mike, tries sleeping in his childhood room, but ends up spending a lot of his time staring at the wall...until his television turns on to loud static. Turning to face the TV, the picture never really clicks into focus. He turns it off and spins around to find someone behind him. It's Jawbone, the skeleton in the black robe. He reaches out to touch the skeleton...

...and finds himself outside, facing an old antenna across the field.

That morning, his mother tells him he's been sleepwalking, like his brother used to. Mike admits to having nightmares, and it's part of why he came back. As he stands up from the kitchen table, he sees someone standing out in the woods.

Gary and Jessica wake up early, and when Jessica checks in on Katie she finds that she's not in bed. In fact, she doesn't seem to be in the house.
That afternoon, Mike ends up at a diner, running into an old English teacher. While there, however, his meal is interrupted by Jessica who comes in looking for Mike; Katie is missing.
They head out to the woods where Mike remembers Eddie and another encounter with the local bullies. That day, Mike and Eddie were nearly attacked by the bully's dog, but Eddie seemed to be able to get it onto his side.
Gary asks if Mike brought up 'Candle Cove' or if Katie did. She did. They find it all a bit odd. They don't even know what channel it was on.

Jessica tells Mike that she asked his mother where he was, but he never showed up at home until 3am-- five hours after he left the dinner party. He tells the truth though-- he thinks 'Candle Cove' has something to do with things. The show only aired during 1988 when the murders started. Now it's back.
Jessica knows something's wrong though. Mike didn't really come straight from home; he was at a psych ward before that, and only stopped off at home to pick up his things and come to Iron Hill. He had a psychotic episode. Jessica thinks he knows something.
Mike decides to speak to Dane.

Answer: The Crow's Nest

Mike finds Dane alone at home, watching TV, knowing that Mike would be coming to talk to him. Mike asks where Jessica was going; Dane asks what 'the crow's nest' is. He knows where to go.
Mike heads home and looks for his dad's old gun, but Marla says that she sold it years ago. Instead, he heads out with a knife in his hand, bound for the old signal tower where they found the bodies nearly three decades ago. Out in the woods, he sees someone watching him-- it's someone dressed as a skeleton, wearing a black robe. He reaches for the figure and it grabs him back. What follows is a chase which, coincidentally, leads Mike on the right path to the crow's nest.
Reaching a cliff, he remembers what he saw many years ago. His brother was there, watching as young children fell off the cliffside into the trees below. The skeleton in the black robe watched from a distance.
As he searches around, he finally finds Katie, hiding behind the boulders. And with that they head home.
They don't notice the figure made of human teeth crawling out from behind the stones, coming along to grab two fresh teeth from the ground.

Answer: No

Back in Iron Hill, Mike is placed in a prison cell and questioned. Gary asks how he knew Katie was there, since she said the TV told her where to go. He says he used to go there with Eddie, and they called it 'The Crow's Nest'. Gary also lets it slip that his daughter was missing a few teeth.
In the jail offices, Mike sees one of the cops put on his jacket. It was the same jacket he saw on the man in the woods outside his mother's house.
Mike is met by Jessica outside and he asks her if she'll stop Katie from watching TV. He reveals that he came back to Iron Hill because it...something...has been calling him.
Later that day, Mike nurses the fresh scars from the cuts he inflicted on his own arm. They scrawl 'MIKE COME HOME'. Marla tells him he doesn't need to leave, but he feels he must. He asks her about 'Candle Cove' and she laughs. 'Candle Cove' was never a TV show. They used to watch the TV and claim it was on, but it was just static.
That night, Mike stays in a hotel. He receives a call from an unknown number. It's Eddie, and he says they're just getting started.
