Players can create characters from a choice of eight different classes based on those used in the table-top version of Dungeons & Dragons.

Although the story is set in the city of Neverwinter, players have the option of seeking adventure in a wide variety of locations based in the Forgotten Realms.

This game is set in a historical period of the "Star Wars" universe about 3600 years before the events of the films. The background story is that there is a tenuous peace between the Galactic Republic, which is aligned with the Jedi Order, and the emergent Sith Empire.

Although players must choose to align themselves with either faction, a character's personal morality may lie anywhere along the dark/light spectrum. Hence, character belonging to the dark side may still support the Republic and light side characters may support the Sith Empire for whatever reasons.

In this game, bounty hunters and troopers have similar skills in that both are proficient in using blaster weapons, although the former work for the Sith Empire while the latter work for the Republic. Smugglers perform covert operations for the Republic; Imperial agents are covert operatives for the Empire. Players engage in a variety of missions around the planet such as fighting alien invaders.
