Let's Explore: Dark Cave Trivia Quiz

It seems there aren't that many Pokemon quizzes on specific locations, so I decided to change that. I'm starting with the rarely-visited Dark Cave in Johto. Assume I'm talking about "Pokemon Gold and Silver" for the Game Boy Color unless I say otherwise.

Question 1 of 10
1. It's good to have a beginner trainer be involved in exploring. Good thing too, I can definitely use your help. First things first. We can't explore the cave without entering it first! You call me on my Pokegear and tell me you're at the entrance. I congratulate you on starting your journey, because I know it took some time to get this far. What is the fewest number of cities/towns you have to pass through to reach Dark Cave? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. We figure out I'm at the Route 45 entrance and you're at the Route 31 entrance. Being the super assistant you are, you offer to make your way through the cave to meet me at my entrance so I don't have to do any more traveling. I, however, already know that as a trainer who's just starting out, you couldn't make it to my side, even if you wanted to. Why not? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. As you see me approaching, you notice I have one of my Pokemon out of its ball. I explain that even with jumping the ledges, I needed my Pokemon for some HM moves. I said I especially brought this Pokemon along because it can learn the three moves I need to fully travel Dark Cave without difficulty. Which Pokemon helped me out, and which moves did it use? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. As we begin to travel, we both notice there is background music playing (pretty weird; what is this, a video game?) as we explore. I tell you that I've definitely heard this music before in my travels throughout Johto, though I can't quite put my finger on it. Where could I have heard this tune before? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Of course, as a new trainer and soon-to-be master explorer, you are excited to research and catch new Pokemon. I inform you that there are Pokemon here that you haven't seen before. As you see four different Pokemon that can be caught on the Violet City side of the cave, you realize that even in your short journey from New Bark Town, one of these Pokemon looks familiar. Which of these Pokemon can you encounter before first entering Dark Cave? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. You want to go further in, but I remind you that as a beginning trainer, you and your Pokemon might get hurt if you do. I send you on your way to Violet City, the next town over, to get your first badge and continue on your journey. I let you know that when you're strong enough, you can call me back and we can explore the rest of the cave together. What level do your Pokemon have to be to match the highest level Pokemon you can find on either side of the cave (excluding Pokemon found by surfing or fishing)? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. We meet up again in a few months at Route 45, and you're finally strong enough to explore the rest of the cave with me! I know it must have been tough to make it past Mahogany and through Ice Path. In fact, you can't even get to Route 44, Ice Path, or Blackthorn City due to the efforts of one particular salesman. Because we know you're not buying any tasty, nutritious Slowpoketails anytime soon, the salesman finally leaves on his own after you do what? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. As we spend all afternoon traveling through the Blackthorn side of the cave, you start to get frustrated that you haven't yet seen a Teddiursa, one of your favorite Pokemon. I tell you not to get upset, as there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for this. Why haven't we encountered one yet? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Throughout our exploration, we thought we were the only humans in the cave. Much to our surprise, we did find just one other person there too. He didn't really look like he was exploring or catching Pokemon, though; he just stood there, looking pretty shady. With my trusty Gengar with me (just in case things got messy), we approached the creepy-looking guy. Strangely enough, he turned out to be pretty nice; in fact, he gave us a pretty neat item. What item did we get from the not-so-bad guy in the cave? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. We finally finished our expedition. We say our farewells as we part ways. Your attention is now back to becoming a Master trainer. If you explored the Blackthorn side of Dark Cave as soon as you were able to, what's the next thing you should do? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Two

After starting out in New Bark Town, one only has to go through Cherrygrove to reach Route 30. Route 30 turns into Route 31, where Dark Cave can be found.
Why not?

Answer: There are ledges in the way that make traveling from Violet to Blackthorn impossible

Every Pokemon Master knows not even the handiest of HMs can traverse the dreaded ledge. Not to worry; it's a bit scary, but I can jump from them to make my way to you.

Answer: Quagsire (Surf, Strength, Flash)

Surf and Strength are absolutely required to go from one end to the other. Flash, while not technically necessary, is considered a must-have unless you prefer memorizing the map or constantly bumping into things. There is actually a Rock Smash-able rock in the cave, but if you have Surf (which you need anyway), it is very easy to just go around the rock.
4. As we begin to travel, we both notice there is background music playing (pretty weird; what is this, a video game?) as we explore. I tell you that I've definitely heard this music before in my travels throughout Johto, though I can't quite put my finger on it. Where could I have heard this tune before?

Answer: Ice Path

In addition to Ice Path and Dark Cave, the catchy tune we're listening to can also be heard in Slowpoke Well. The other three places share a different theme.

Answer: Geodude

You can actually catch Geodude in Route 46 between New Bark Town and Cherrygrove City. The hint was included because in Pokemon Crystal, it is possible to catch several Pokemon (including Zubat) more easily and earlier on in the game.

Answer: 30

Ursaring, which are found on the Blackthorn side of the cave, range from levels 25-30, making them the strongest Pokemon you'll see on land there. Magikarp, Goldeen, and Seaking which are caught using the Super Rod are found at level 40, but we don't need to worry about that because we won't be doing any fishing during our trip.

Answer: Vanquish Team Rocket in the Lake of Rage, their Mahogany Town base, and Goldenrod City

Team Rocket tried to make a comeback from three years ago after Giovanni was defeated. However, their plans are foiled for good at the top of Goldenrod City's Radio Tower.

Answer: Teddiursa only appears in the morning

I hope you read the question carefully; it says we've been out all AFTERNOON. Of course we won't find Teddiursa, they're probably all away sleeping!

Answer: Blackglasses

Blackglasses increase the power of Dark-type moves by 10 percent (20 from Generation IV onwards). Other items hidden in the cave include a Revive, an Elixir, and TM13 (Snore).
10. We finally finished our expedition. We say our farewells as we part ways. Your attention is now back to becoming a Master trainer. If you explored the Blackthorn side of Dark Cave as soon as you were able to, what's the next thing you should do?

Answer: Go to Blackthorn Gym to get your eighth badge

The soonest possible point one can enter the Route 45 entrance of Dark Cave is immediately after exiting Ice Path. This means you only need seven badges to get in. Now that we're done with Dark Cave, it's time to move forward with your adventure!
