Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A forerunner of the genre, 'Command & Conquer' is classed as a type of game known as 'RTS'. For what does the letter S stand?

Answer: Strategy

The game was created by Westwood Studios, from Las Vegas, who became part of Electronic Arts in 1998. RTS stands for real-time strategy, and 'Command & Conquer' was an early version of this type of game, which allows players to play in real time and simultaneously with other players. Players also have to make decisions about their tactics which means the game plays differently depending on the choices made.

The premise of the game is that Earth has been damaged by a substance called Tiberium, leading to conflict between those who want to stop it spreading (the goodies) and those who want to take advantage of it (the baddies).
2. When it was issued in 1995, the first game was just known as 'Command & Conquer'. What name was added to it retrospectively when later games in the series were released?

Answer: Tiberian Dawn

The adding of a sub title like this is called a retronym, meaning something added later to distinguish it from newer developments. This first game set the basics - opposing forces, gathering resources and fighting to eliminate the rival army. Players have to establish bases and build them up to expand their equipment and personnel.
3. There are two main groups in the series, GDI and Brotherhood of Nod. What does GDI stand for?

Answer: Global Defense Initiative

GDI and Nod are the opposing forces and are mostly equal in strength overall. They do have differences in the way they structure their forces. GDI concentrates more on weaponry and armour which costs more and tis more cumbersome to move around. The Brotherhood of Nod sacrifices firepower and protection in return for numerical superiority and speed.

In the game, GDI is created by the United Nations while the Brotherhood of Nod is a revolutionary group.
4. Following the success of 'Command & Conquer', a prequel was issued in 1996 under which title, later used for a whole series of new games?

Answer: Red Alert

Westwood Studios developed 'Red Alert' and the game was published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment. The events of the game pre-dated those of 'Command & Conquer' and focused on battles between the Soviet Union and Allied Forces for control of Europe.

As in the original game, the two sides have different abilities, both strengths and weaknesses, and the player has to plan their strategies to make best use of their side's attributes. Additional versions were issued in 2000 and 2008.
5. Who is the leader of the Brotherhood of Nod in 'Command & Conquer?

Answer: Kane

Kane is a rather mysterious figure who claims to have been around for thousands of years, and is often described as a prophet by devotees of the Brotherhood. He is depicted as having been an adviser to Joseph Stalin at one period during his life. In the files kept by INTERPOL his name is recorded as Jacob Caine while MI6 believe his real name to be Amir al-Quayym.

Kane is described as the founder of the Brotherhood of Nod, which is a mixture of religion and politics designed to further his aims. Humans are useful to him so long as they carry out his bidding.
6. The Temple of Nod is the headquarters of the Brotherhood and was located in which Balkan capital city?

Answer: Sarajavo

This building forms a vital part of the first game in the 'Command & Conquer' series and is a multi-purpose construction. It houses the centre for communication and is the leader's command centre as well as containing the Brotherhood's research laboratory and nuclear missiles.

It is depicted as being in Sarajevo, the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina and of historical significance since it is where Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, the catalyst for the First World War. The other three cities are the capitals of Greece, Bulgaria and Albania, all in the same general area of southeast Europe.
7. In 'Command & Conquer' what is an amphibious APC used for?

Answer: Transporting units

APC stands for armoured personnel carrier and is used for carrying infantry units by land or water - amphibious is the term which means something can be used on either. The vehicle itself is not armed and should be protected by other units, nor can the personnel disembark while it's on water.

It can carry up to five units, so is useful for moving large numbers of troops from one place to another.
8. In 'Tiberian Sun', which colour uniforms do the GDI wear?

Answer: Gold

'Tiberian Sun' was issued in 1999 as a sequel to the original 'Command & Conquer' game and featuring the two opposing forces of the GDI and Brotherhood of Nod. Earth is close to ecological disaster due to the spread of tiberium. Players can choose whether to play as the GDI or Brotherhood and can pick Europe, Africa or North America as their battlefield.

In this game, GDI forces wear gold while the Brotherhood wears red.
9. A new series of games under the 'Command & Conquer' umbrella began in 2003 incorporating the name of which army rank in the title?

Answer: Generals

'Command & Conquer: Generals' has similarities to the other games, but has completely different personnel. The strategic elements of the game remain, with players being able to choose whether to play as the USA, China or a terrorist group called the Global Liberation Army (GLA). Each faction has three generals, giving the series its name.

An expansion pack, adding 'Zero Hour' to the tile, came out the same year adding more units and missions to the game.
10. Updated versions of the first two games in the 'Command & Conquer' series were issued in 2020 using which of these words to describe them?

Answer: Remastered

The full title is 'Command & Conquer: Remastered Collection' with improvements made to the graphics and sound and with additional expansion packs to enhance the games. The whole package has in the region of a hundred missions which can be played.

The reissued version were published by Electronic Arts with the revisions carried out by Petroglyph Games, based in Las Vegas, and Lemon Sky Studios in Malaysia. The plots remain the same as the original games, but the play reflects the major improvements made in computer games in the decades which have passed.
