Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1998, Valve made this first-person shooter featuring a character named Gordon Freeman. In it, he must escape from Black Mesa while fighting aliens from a planet known as Xen, which he released upon Earth. What game is this?

Answer: Half-Life

In 2005, "Half-Life" was the best-selling shooter of all time. It is with little surprise as it tells a very strong story, features some really neat weapons, and has immense length. Also, the PC version of the game features an addictive multiplayer mode.

The game was successful enough to spawn several sequels, spinoff games, and multiplayer online shooters. If you have trouble believing, play it for yourself or check out the reviews at "Gamespot.com", "IGN", or even "Official Playstation Magazine".
2. This game, released by Nintendo for its 3D system in 1998, featured a hero named Link who was on a quest to stop the evil Ganondorf and find the legendary Triforce. His main source of travel was both a horse named Epona, and an Ocarina. What 'timeless' classic is this?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

"The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" used the "Super Mario 64" graphics engine and heavily modified it to make for a more complete "Zelda" experience. The game was long, well written, and allowed the player to travel through time and go from a child to an adult in seconds.

The map was massive, the enemies were creative, and several side-quests made the game an almost infinitely replayable experience.
3. Konami released this very sneaky game for Sony's Playstation in 1998. The game featured a character named Solid Snake, and his job was to travel through a military base in Alaska and save hostages, as well as defeat his rival, Liquid Snake. What sneaky classic is this?

Answer: Metal Gear Solid

The game's presentation was very unique. It told its story through well written cinematics and voice over dialogue, rather than just telling it all to the player in the instruction manual or main menu. The story, weapons, and environmental factors of the game seem to have been well researched, and even more expertly executed.

The system of hiding, fighting, and wearing the occasional disguise set this game as the benchmark for all future stealth-adventure games.
4. One of the most controversial fighting games of all time had been brought to the 3D era of gaming. This time around, its characters, like Scorpion and Raiden, could use weapons, as well as have level-specific fatalities that look realistic with the new graphics. What game is this?

Answer: Mortal Kombat 4

"Mortal Kombat 4" was one of the first classic fighting games to be brought to the 3D generation. "Nintendo Power Magazine", as well as several other critics found the game to be average at best. There was nothing special that redefined the fighting genre, apart from a few drops of blood, but that was evident in the first "Mortal Kombat". Regardless of the critics' critical responses to the game, it still sold astonishingly well.
5. Following a tremendous fan following with their "Tie Fighter" and "X-Wing" games, Lucasarts decided to release a 3D flight simulator for the Nintendo 64. This time, the player took on the role of a rogue pilot in the infamous 'Rogue Squadron'. Missions took the player all over the galaxy, and gave a preview for "Star Wars Episode 1" with its inclusion of the Naboo Starfighter as an unlockable ship. What game is this?

Answer: Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

The game took place in the time period immediately after "The Empire Strikes Back" and 5 years after the "Return of the Jedi". The main objective in the game was to pilot one of the several "Star Wars" craft, and accomplish objectives that would allow the player to advance in levels.

There were several unlockable vehicles, including the Naboo Starfighter, Millenium Falcon, TIE Interceptor, and a 1969 Buick Electra. The addition of the unlockables, as well as the engaging depth of the missions proved to be key selling points of the game. "IGN" praised the game for its high-resolution graphics, as well as its cinematic sound, and masterful presentation.
6. This Rareware game, about a monkey, was released as a 3D platformer game for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. It seems that the evil King K. Rool provoked the main character by capturing several of the playable characters including Diddy, Lanky, Tiny, and Chunky. What banana peel of a game was this?

Answer: Donkey Kong 64

The story of the game is essentially the same as any of the others in the series. King K. Rool wants to destroy Donkey Kong's island, but before he tries to do that, he locks up all of the other Kongs, that could potentially pose a threat to him. Along the way, Donkey Kong frees the others and faces off against K. Rool.

The game combined wit, with great graphics, steady story-telling, and immense length, and made a super game. In 1999, it received several awards from the infamous "Nintendo Power Magazine", as well as an editor's choice award from "Gamespot.com". Be warned, the game may make you go bananas.
7. This World War II game, was the spark behind the war game phenomenon seen today in games. Steven Spielberg personally asked EA Games to make this game about a soldier named Jimmy Patterson, battling his way through the battlefields of World War II. What game is this?

Answer: Medal of Honor

"Medal of Honor" was destined for greatness from the outset. Set in a relatively uncommon period of time, World War II, the game featured beautiful graphics, highly detailed character and environmental models, a beautifully orchestrated soundtrack, as well as great voice acting.

The game ventured out of the ordinary, as in not taking place in the future, and made a truly unique gaming experience. Of course it's not just my opinion, "IGN" gave the game a 9.3/10, and "Gamespot.com" gave the game an 8.5/10. Definitely worth picking up the game that launched the now uninspired World War II shooter genre.
8. One of the first ever squad-based shooters was released in 1999, for the Mac, N64, and PC. Its developer, Red Storm Entertainment, decided to make the game as realistic as possible, as they worked right alongside the great Tom Clancy. What game is this?

Answer: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six

The concept of the game was a Tom Clancy creation. He was working on a book with the same title at the same time, and thus, the game followed its storyline very closely. The game ended up being more successful than any of the developers would have thought.

They hadn't realized that they had created a new genre of game, the tactical shooter genre. The game focused on the realistic factors of war as opposed to going into a building guns blazing. Of course, that very creation gave the game some mixed reviews. "Gamespot.com" gave it a great rating but claimed that the realism took out some of the fun from the game, whereas "IGN" praised almost the entirety of the game.
9. This fighting game, released in 1999 for the Sega Dreamcast was named after a sword used by a character within the game. In fact, almost all of the combat was done using weapons, and that made the game a classic almost overnight. What game was this?

Answer: Soul Calibur

"Soul Calibur" was the second iteration of a popular arcade fighting game, created by Namco, in 1995. What was originally intended to be an arcade game, ended up being one of the Sega Dreamcast's most popular games. The game was unpopular in the arcades so, Namco decided to port the game to Sega's console. What else can be said about it other than sheer perfection. Gorgeous graphics, unique fighting elements, advanced physics, and seemingly interactive environments made for one of the most complete fighting experience ever available. "IGN" gave the game a perfect 10/10 rating, "Gamespot.com" also gave it a perfect 10/10, as did "Electronic Gaming Monthly Magazine", "GMR Magazine", and the lesser known "Adrenaline Vault".
10. Put all of Nintendo's most famous characters into one ring, and let them duke it out for a grand prize. It sounded like a crazy idea, but this melee game released for the Nintendo 64, let a player take any Nintendo character they want and beat others down. Potentially, Link from the "Zelda" series could defeat Pikachu from the "Pokemon" series. What legendary and unique fighting game is this?

Answer: Super Smash Brothers

The game featured twelve of Nintendo's most popular characters, four of whom were unlockables. These characters included Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus Aran, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox McCloud, Pikachu, Luigi, Captain Falcon, Ness, and Jigglypuff. The game had very nice graphics, as well as a good fighting system. Critics, such as "Nintendo Power" loved the game, but slightly bashed it for its lack of a health bar system that made it hard to tell when you were near death.

The game sold over a million copies in merely a few months, and spawned a sequel on the Gamecube, as well as its upcoming one, the Nintendo Wii.
