Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Triumph Acclaim was born in 1981 out of a need to replace ageing British Leyland products such as the Austin Allegro. On which car was it based on?

Answer: Honda Ballade

I didnt last very long but it was the start of a 20 odd year partnership between BL and Honda. When the Acclaim ceased production in 1984 it was replaced by the Rover 200 series again a car based on the next generation Honda Ballade. With the end of the Acclaim so too came the end of the Truimph name on cars.
2. The Hillman Avenger was sold under two other European car makers' names before it finished production. Chrysler was one other but can you name the last one?

Answer: Talbot

Peugeot took over what was Chrysler Europe in 1978. With this came the rebranding of all the products to the name Talbot. So what started as a Hillman Avenger then became a Chrysler Avenger and ended its life in 1981 as a Talbot Avenger.

Outside Europe, it was sold as the Plymouth Cricket (USA), Volswagen 1800 (Argentina) and under various Dodge names in other South American countries.
3. What's another name for the Nissan Cherry Europe?

Answer: Alfa Romeo Arna

Some would say it got the worst of both worlds with Japanese design and Italian build quality. Production only lasted from 1984 until 1987.
4. The Daewoo Matiz was originally designed and created to replace a totally different car from another car maker. Name that car and model.

Answer: Fiat Cinquecento

It was in fact designed by Giugiaro of Italy as a design concept for Fiat with the intention of replacing the Fiat Cinquecento (1991-1998 model). Fiat rejected the design and instead opted for a major facelift on the out-going model. Giugiaro then sold the design to the Koreans where it became the Daewoo Matiz.

The design has since been copied by Cheery motors of China where it is marketed as the Cherry QQ.
5. Which car is the odd one out due to its engineering?

Answer: Simca 1100

The Peugeot 104 , Citroen LNA and Talbot Samba were all early examples of PSA group badge engineering. Give or take a few cosmetic items and trim levels they were all in fact the same car. The Simca 1100 had no connection to theses cars what so ever.
6. Seat of Spain is now a part of the Volkswagen group. This was not always the way and in 1981 Seat launched its Fura model. On which other car was the Fura based?

Answer: Fiat 127

Seat built many of Fiats cars under license from 1950 onwards ,the 127 being one of them. The Fura ran along side one of Seats own creations the Ibiza from 1984 until 1986. In this year Seat became a part of the Volkswagan empire.
7. In 1978 the Indian-built Premier 118 started production some 4 years after the car on which it was based went out of production. Which car was it based on?

Answer: Fiat 124

The original Fiat 124 went out of production in 1974 but still survives to this day as a Lada built in Russia. Like many Fiat models of this era the 124 was built under license in India by Premier motors and badged 118. Later versions were badged 118 NE to signify the fitting of a Nissan Engine.
8. The Australian Holden Monaro is sold in northern Europe under a different name. Which one?

Answer: Vauxhall Monaro

Vauxhall models by and large are Opels with a Vauxhall badge. This is unique to the UK. Both companies fall under the GM umbrella and when Vauxhall needed a high performance car to sell they just dipped into the vast selection of GM models, one of which is the Australian Holden Monaro (Holden also being a GM-owned company).

The car was rebadged a Vauxhall and sold through the Vauxhall dealer network in the UK.
9. What other badge would you find on a Maruti 800?

Answer: Suzuki Alto

The Maruti 800 and the original Suzuki Alto are twins. Both were launched in 1984 and manufactured in India. Confusingly the Maruti 800 was replaced by the Maruti Alto.
10. The car sold throughout Europe in the 1980s as the Fiat Ritmo was given a different name in the UK. What was it?

Answer: Fiat (Super) Strada

Not to be confused with the current Strada pick up built by Fiat, the Ritmo was always called the Strada or Super Strada in the UK. The unofficial reason for its name change was that Fiat UK bosses thought that Ritmo sounded too much like a brand of lawnmower which was called the Flymo and fearful of negative press changed its name.
