Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most visitors to this 15th century Irish castle will want to bend backwards under the battlements to kiss the famous stone. What is the name of the castle?

Answer: Blarney Castle

Kissing the Blarney Stone is meant to give the gift of eloquence and persuasiveness. Blarney Castle is in County Cork. Dublin Castle is, of course, in Dublin and the name of the city comes from the black pool ("dubh linn") beneath the castle gardens. Dun Aengus is a 2000-year old fort ruin on the Aran Island of Inishmor. Donegal Castle is in ruins and has no stone to kiss.
2. Which part of France is particularly famous for its many beautiful chateaux?

Answer: Loire Valley

Some of the most famous Loire Valley chateaux include Chenonceau, Cheverny, Chaumont, Amboise and Chambord. The Place de la Concorde is a square in Paris and is known as the site of 1,344 deaths by the guillotine. Provence is known for its beautiful countryside and Roman history. The Dordogne is known for its prehistoric caves and cuisine.
3. Henry VIII built Deal, Walmer and Sandown Castles to fortify a southern section of the coastline against a French invasion. He included them in an old alliance of Kent and Sussex ports, which has been known for at least a millennium by what name?

Answer: Cinque Ports

The Cinque Ports originally included the five of Sandwich, Dover, Hythe, Romney and Hastings. Henry VIII added the three castles to improve the defences of that area of coastline. Sandown fell into the sea in 1977 but the other two are in excellent condition.
The other three names I made up from Latin words for "defend".
4. This castle is said to be the largest completely preserved castle in Europe, as it has never been successfully attacked. The castle is also known for its torture chamber and the archbishop's indoor toilet. You can walk up the hill, but it is easier to take the funicular railway. What is its name?

Answer: Festung Hohensalzburg

This impregnable Austrian castle was the seat of the ruling Archbishops of Salzburg.
Windsor Castle was also impregnable but doesn't have a funicular.
Bran Castle doesn't have a funicular, either. It is famously, infamously (and misleadingly) known as Dracula's castle.
Schloss Heidelberg does have a funicular but it was stormed and extensively damaged in the Thirty Years' War (1618-48) and later, in the reign of Louis XIV, by French troops under the command of Turenne inflicted further, masive damage in order to make it completely useless for military purposes.
5. In what year did King Ludwig II commence building the classic fairy-tale castle of Neuschwanstein in southern Germany?

Answer: 1869

Known for his love of swans, his bizarre love-life, wayward behaviour, his love of Wagnerian operas and his madness, Ludwig's extravagant buildings nearly bankrupted Bavaria.
6. Vaduz Castle is not open to the public, as the Prince still lives there. In what country is Vaduz Castle?

Answer: Liechtenstein

The sovereign state of Liechtenstein consists of little more than the "city" of Vaduz and some pretty alpine countryside, but they have managed to maintain their independence amid the confusion of twentieth-century Europe.
7. This castle has a fascinating history, but one of the best known stories is of the two boy princes who went missing and were presumed murdered by their uncle. It is believed that if the ravens ever leave the castle, it will collapse. What is the name of this castle?

Answer: The Tower of London

The castle has an interesting history of beheadings, ghost hauntings, betrayals, murders and imprisonment.
8. A Scottish castle is the site of an annual world-renowned military display. What is the castle called?

Answer: Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is perched high above most of the surrounding area of the city, which gives it an air of drama. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people travel to Edinburgh Castle to see the Edinburgh Tattoo.
Stirling Castle is impressively sited atop a cliff not too far from Edinburgh.
Inverary Castle is a pretty grey castle in the west of Scotland.
Balmoral Castle is a historic castle in the highlands.
9. Which of the following castles IS NOT on the Rhine?

Answer: Schloss Heidelberg

Burg Rheinstein is a classic Rhine castle perched high above the river - I visited it during my recent European tour and can highly recommend it. Burg Rheinfels is a mass of fascinating ruins also perched high above the Rhine. I didn't stop at Burg Katz but it's on the banks of the Rhine, too. Heidelberg of course is not on the Rhine at all - it's on the Neckar.
10. This castle in the south of England is my family's favourite castle, being the first we ever explored. As well as its impenetrable walls, it is known for its secret wartime tunnels which were crucial to the allies' success in World War II. Which castle is it?

Answer: Dover Castle

These tunnels, which are carved through the chalk under Dover Castle, were used as the headquarters from where Vice-Admiral Ramsey masterminded the 1940 evacuation of the troops trapped at Dunkirk. They also housed troops and a hospital.
