Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Under which political party did Alvaro Uribe Velez get reelected in 2006?

Answer: Independent

Uribe started his political career as a member of the liberal party. However, for the presidential elections of 2002 and 2006 he has claimed to be independent, notwithstanding the support given to him by "uribista" parties such as cambio radical or partido de la u.
2. Which political party claimed victory in the 2006 parliamentary elections?

Answer: Partido de la U

In spite of the fact that the partido de la u was created shortly before the elections, its affiliation with Alvaro Uribe's figure gave the party an overwhelming victory in the parliamentary elections. Traditional parties such as the liberal party were soundly defeated.
3. Antanas Mockus is of which ancestry?

Answer: Lithuanian

Antanas Mockus' parents came to the country from Lithuania. He is their only son. Amongst other titles, Antanas Mockus holds a mathematics degree from the university of Dijon, a philosophy degree from the same university, a masters degree in philosophy from the Universidad Nacional and an honoris causa doctorate from Paris XIII.

He has become a figure of importance in colombian politics due to his "pedagogical" approach to government.
4. Was Colombia an official ally of the United States in the Operation Iraqi Freedom?

Answer: Yes, it supported the United States but did not send troops

As an evident effect of being natural US allies in the south American continent, Alvaro Uribe's government fully supported the US in their invasion of Iraq after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Politically, Colombia was bound to support the US as a sign of gratitude towards their help in fighting drugs. That said, Colombia did not send any troops to Iraq (although the government thought of doing so) because they were needed urgently back home.
5. Which leader of a political party allied with the President was rewarded with the embassy in South Africa following the 2006 presidential elections?

Answer: Carlos Moreno de Caro

Moreno de Caro was rewarded with the embassy following his "burn out" as a senator. Moreno is a highly recognized figure in Colombian politics as a result of his unorthodox political marketing tactics and his acrimonious rhetoric. Others remember him because of his highly controversial tv spots such as the "Flautist of Hammelin" and the "Dejen jugar al moreno".
6. Which political figure saw its party receive a harsh defeat in the 2006 parliamentary elections?

Answer: Antanas Mockus

In spite of having a very solid ideological platform and highly qualified candidates, Antanas Mockus' Visionarios party fell short of the votes required to obtain a seat in the parliament and thus became a victim of the new party law which dictates that parties that do not obtain a single seat in the parliament are to loose their legal personality.
7. In which year was the FARC created?

Answer: 1964

According to political historians and the members of the terrorist group, the organization dates back to 1964, when, in response to an attempt by the government to capture marquetalia (the headquarters of the communist republics) the surviving members of the communist organizations decided to create an armed group.
8. Which of these positions did Alvaro Uribe Velez not hold before becoming president in 2002?

Answer: Member of the house of representatives

Alvaro Uribe started his political career late in the 70's when he worked for the labor secretary. Later on he served as head of the aeronautica civil, mayor of Medellín, councilman of Medellín, Senator, and Governor of Antioquia.
9. In 2006 the "Comision de la Verdad" presented its report on the incident of the "Toma del Palacio de Justicia" which took place in 1985. These were all findings of the commission except:

Answer: The whereabouts of the employees who dissappeared in the event

Even though the commission established that the army was responsible for the extraction of the civilian employees who were at the palace's cafeteria in the moment of the tragedy it was unable to determine their whereabouts or the location of their corpses.
10. Which prominent political figure was forced to decline an embassy commission in Paris in mid 2006?

Answer: Ernesto Samper

In mid 2006 Ernesto Samper, former president of the country, was forced to decline a commission to be the ambassador to France after a myriad of national and international critics regarding his "unsuitability" for the job.
