1. Where was Tito born?

Answer: Kumrovec, Croatia

Kumrovec is a village in the Croatian province of Zagorje. Tito was born Josip Broz (Tito being his nickname) in 1892 into a poor family. His father was Croatian and his mother Slovenian. He died in Ljubljana, Slovenia, 1980. The house he was born in is now a museum and tourist attraction.

Answer: Austro-Hungarian Army

Tito was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1913. By 1914, at the age of 22, he became the youngest Sergeant Major and was sent to the Eastern front to fight the Russians. He was wounded and captured by the Russians and spent 13 months in a Russian hospital.

It was in Russia that Tito discovered Communism, which was to change his destiny and the country he was to eventually rule. He joined the South Slav Bolsheviks and the Red Guard (but not as Sergeant Major) and fought in the Russian Revolution.

The JNA was the army under his regime, of which he was Marshal.

By 1948, Tito broke off from Stalin and Russia and created the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia which comprised of Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia.

Answer: Third wife

His first wife (a Russian) was Belousova Pelagija, whom he met whilst fighting in the Russian Revolution. She was 14 years old and he 26 when they married in 1918. His second wife (a Slovenian) was Herta Hass. They married in 1940. Jovanka Budisavljevic, his third wife, was Serbian and they married in 1953. Tito was 59, Jovanka was 27. Marrying Jovanka was not a popular decision, especially with the Croats, who already felt that Serbia had too much of a stronghold on the rest of Yugoslavia.

It's widely believed that his true love was his mistress, Davorjnaka Paunovic, who died of TB in 1946.

Answer: Richard Burton

Film legend has it that Burton was drunk in every scene and was seldom shot below the waist because he couldn't walk steadily. However, his voice was as magical as ever.

This cafe is decorated with Tito memorabilia and photos. During the early twenty-first century, Tito's popularity began to grow again among the younger generation who felt that things were easier under his rule and that a strong ruler could solve many of their problems.

Answer: Prison camp

Tito broke ties with Stalin in 1948. In 1949 he built prisons on this island in which anyone suspected of being a Stalinist/Russian sympathiser was incarcerated. It was more like a concentration camp than just a prison, and its existence was kept secret from the general public.

It has been compared to the Russian 'gulags'. The prison was closed in 1988 - eight years after Tito's death. What took them so long?

The Partisans became the fourth strongest army in Europe, during Tito's rule.The army's official name was Jugoslavenska narodna armija, or JNA. (meaning the Yugolsav People's army.)

Domobrani literally means 'the homeguard'
9. In what year did Tito become president of Yugoslavia?

Answer: 1953

He also served as Prime Minister from 1944-63, partly overlapping with his presidency. It took 3 years for Tito to build Yugoslavia into the Socialist state that he envisioned. Even though his ties with Russia and Stalin had been strong, he broke ties with them in 1948, stating that despite his respect for Russia as the land of Socialism, he could not love Russia more than his own country.
10. What is the highest military rank held by Tito?

Answer: Marshal

He was known as Marshal Tito. Before being drafted into the army Tito worked as a locksmith and mechanic. Tito's military title was not nominal. He served in WWI, The Russian Revolution and WWII. In 1914, at the age of 22, he was the youngest Sergeant-Major in the Austro-Hungarian Army.
