There is a wide range of summer training courses in air cadets. There is basic training, which is a 2-week course that teaches general cadet knowledge. Once you have completed basic training, it is up to you what path you want to take in cadets. There are many options that are offered in introductory specialty courses, such as intro to leadership (ITLC), intro to survival training (ITSTC), intro to aviation (ITAC).

The list goes on. Then, there are 6 week advanced specialty courses, such as senior leaders (SLC), survival instructor (SI), glider and power scholarships, and international cadet exchange. If you are a more senior cadet, you can apply for a staff cadet position at air cadet summer training centres (ACSTC) and receive a salary.

6 Jim Whitecross squadron in Manitoba was the first air cadet squadron in Canada.

Answer: 16 for glider, 17 for power

If you are 16, you can apply for a glider pilot scholarship, and 17, you can apply for a power scholarship. To apply for this, you must take a ground school course to study for the entrance exam, go through a review board, and have a Transport Canada medical certificate. If you are selected, you will go through a six-week training course to get your pilots license. I currently hold a glider pilots license.

The lowest ranks are AC (Air Cadet) and LAC (Leading Air Cadet). These are training ranks, and have no real responsibility. The first non-commissioned officer (NCO) rank, is a corporal. Corporals are junior NCOs that are responsible for cadets. The next rank is sergeant. Sergeant is a senior NCO.

A sergeant is usually the 2IC (second in command) of a flight (air force equivalent to a platoon). Flight Sergeants are also senior NCOs and are in charge of a flight. Next are warrant officer 2nd class and warrant officer 1st class. Warrant officers oversee the squadron activities, and make sure everyone is doing their job.

The squadron commander (regimental sergeant major) is a WO1.

There are three levels of physical fitness in air cadets; participation, bronze, silver, gold and excellence. Cadets are usually given the Canada fitness test at summer camp.

Range experience is a very important part of the cadet curriculum, but it is not mandatory. Air cadets are required to have at least one glider flight per year, as well as participation in at least one field exercise per year. Cadet harassment and abuse prevention (CHAP) training is also necessary.
