Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How does one express double length of a vowel sound, in this case "a", in Finnish?

Answer: aa

Finnish is notably the language of many double letters. Double consonants also serve to lengthen sound in pronunciation.
2. Which of these is a simple and relatively informal greeting in Finnish?

Answer: Hei

One could also use "hyvää huomenta" to say "good morning", or greet somebody with "terve" as a more formal equivalent of "hello".
3. It's late and you're leaving your Finnish friend's house. How could you say "good night"?

Answer: Hyvää yötä

If it happens to be Christmas Eve ("jouluaatto"), you could possibly say "hyvää joulua" ("merry Christmas") as you leave, but the only way to say "good night" of these choices is "hyvää yötä".
4. Which of these wacky terms is NOT actually used to describe distance in Finnish?

Answer: Norsunloikka (the distance indicated by "an elephant's leap")

Believe it or not, these are all used to describe some kind of distance, be it short, as the rock's throw, or longer, as the bark of a dog. The only made up unit of these is the elephant's jump. Think of it this way - there are no elephants in Finland, but plenty of reindeer!
5. Which of these countries (written in their Finnish names) is farthest away from Finland?

Answer: Yhdysvallat

Viro (Estonia), Ruotsi (Sweden), and Venäjä (Russia) are all in close proximity to Finland (called Suomi). Yhdysvallat, or the United States, is definitely much farther away.
6. Which of the following foods would you most likely have for dessert?

Answer: Jäätelö

According to most standards, you would have jäätelö (ice cream) for dessert, rather than kana (chicken), kala (fish), or lehtisalaatti (lettuce).
7. One of these animals belongs in an aquarium if you are to keep it as a pet. Which is it?

Answer: Kultakala

Neither the kirahvi (giraffe), kissa (cat), nor papukaija (parrot) belong in an aquarium, though it might make a good home for a kultakala, a goldfish.
8. Yes or No: Should you be offended if a Finnish person calls you "tyhmä"?

Answer: Yes

Most people would be at least somewhat offended having been called "tyhmä", or stupid.
9. A Finnish person has just done a job for you and is waiting for his payment. Which of these would be appropriate to give to him as payment?

Answer: Raha

It is definitely inappropriate to pay someone with "rikkinäinen akvaario" (a broken fish tank), "tyhjä kaljapullo" (an empty beer bottle), or "anoppi" (mother-in-law) whether she's yours or otherwise. A better idea is to pay a Finnish person's wage with "raha" (money).
10. Which of these items is NOT "vihreä"?

Answer: Carrot

All of these items are "vihreä" (green), except the carrot.
11. A Finnish SCUBA instructor is discussing what you might see on a trip underwater. Which of these words would you probably NOT hear him say?

Answer: Leivänpaahdin

Unless part of a relatively recent shipwreck, you would most likely not hear the SCUBA instructor talk about seeing a "leivänpaahdin" (toaster) underwater. He could, instead, be talking about "kala" (fish), "hai" (shark), or "mustekala" (octopus).
12. It gets very cold in Finland, as much as -40 degrees Celsius in the coldest winter days. Which of these would you not put on your feet to keep warm in these frigid temperatures?

Answer: Jää

Putting "jää" (ice) on your feet would certainly not help warm them up. A more rational thing to do might be to put on "sukka" (a sock), "saapas" (a boot), or "kenkä" (a shoe), and it would also help to have more than one of these.
13. Which of these items doesn't belong in a bedroom?

Answer: Kylpyamme

A "kylpyamme" (bathtub) doesn't belong in a bedroom, but a "sänky" (bed), "tyyny" (pillow), or "herätyskello" (alarm clock) might.
14. All of the following words, except one, can be used to describe a person's physical appearance. Which of these is the exception because it is an emotion?

Answer: Iloinen

"Lihava" (fat), "lyhyt" (short), and "blondi" (blond) are physical descriptions. "Iloinen" (happy) is the exception, being an emotion, of course, and happiness comes from the inside!
15. Which of these Finnish words refers to the brother of your mother?

Answer: Eno

Your mother's brother is your uncle, "eno". "Sisko" is a sister, "isoäiti" a grandma, and "veljentytär" a niece.
