Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Your Hispanic friend gives you a sheet with directions to a soccer game, but you can't understand the directions since they are a mixture of Spanish and English. One word that frequently appears on the sheet is however "izquierda": what does it mean?

Answer: left

The word for right is "derecha" and the word for straight is "derecho". This may lead to some confusion if the author has sloppy handwriting.
2. If you followed the directions that your friend had described earlier about turning "izquierda", you would probably turn on the ____________.

Answer: intermitente

"Intermitente" means the directional/turn signal. "Luz" is a light so you would be turning on a light. A "cuaderno" is a notebook and you really can't turn one of those, either. And "doblar" is simply the verb meaning to turn.
3. It starts to rain and you can't see very well through your drenched window. To further complicate things you can't turn on the windshield wipers, because you don't know where they are. What is the name for windshield wipers in Spanish?

Answer: limpiaparabrisas

You probably wouldn't find a "sombrilla" switch in your car since a "sombrilla" is an umbrella. An "impermeable" is a rain coat, and a "hoja de agua" is a water blade which, to my knowledge, does not exist.
4. The rain clears up, but your visibility is still low. As you are coming around a sharp turn, you notice a deer standing in the middle of the road. With barely any time to react, you slam on the brakes, or in other words, you slam on the _________.

Answer: frenos

"Frenos" is Spanish for car brakes. All other answers refer to things you apply or put on the body. "Zapatos" are shoes, "maquillaje" is make-up, and "guantes" are gloves. Hopefully you would not be applying make-up while driving down a curvy road or driving anywhere for that matter.
5. Although you did your best to avoid hitting the deer, you were unable to stop the car in time, and as a result there is a big dent in your hood. If you were to take the car to an autobody shop, you would describe the damage as a dent in what?

Answer: capo

"Capo" is the Spanish word for hood. This word is mostly used in Spain. All other answers were very obscure. A dent in the "cabeza" would be a dent in your head. A "chicharron" is a pork rind and I don't think you can take one of those to an autobody shop for repair. And it is kind of hard to dent a kitchen ("cocina" in Spanish).
6. Before taking your car in for repairs, you are delayed yet again by another complication. As you were braking to avoid the deer, one of your tires mysteriously blew out. What is the Spanish word for tire?

Answer: llanta

"Llanta" is the Spanish word for tire. You can find a "cama" in most bedrooms since it's a bed, and "vaso" means a glass. "Ropa" is Spanish for clothing.
7. You realize that you must now find a "llanta de repuesto". What exactly are you looking for?

Answer: spare tire

You need to change your tire if you ever want to make it to the soccer game, so you look for your spare tire, or "llanta de repuesto". You may also want to look for a jack and possibly a ride to the game if you are desperate. However, the only reason for you to need a chia pet is if you are really bored.
8. Despite the fact that you are not sure where your spare tire is, or if you even have one, you start by looking for it in your ________.

Answer: maletero

Both "maleta" and "maletero" refer to luggage: "maleta" is typically a suitcase and the "maletero" is a trunk, but it can also mean the person responsible for handling baggage at a train station. "Boleto" is the Spanish word for ticket and "piscina" is a pool. If your spare tire is in a pool... well, good luck with your search! :)
9. After replacing your tire, you get back on your way, determined to see at least a part of the game. Before too long, you are on a straightaway, and you notice yet another animal on the road: only this time, it's a squirrel. To give the creature fair warning you decide to blare your _________.

Answer: claxon

You blare your "claxon" (horn) to get the animal to move out of your way. Coincidentally, the other possible answers were, for the most part, incorrectly spelled brass instruments with the exception of "tuba", which is spelled correctly.
10. You finally make it to the "ciudad" where the soccer game is being played, but an abundance of "semaforos" prevents you from getting to the stadium in time to see the final seconds of the nail-biting game. What do the two quoted words translate to, respectively?

Answer: city, traffic lights

"Ciudad" means city and "semaforos" is traffic lights. Any individual that has a day like this one, should probably seek some mental help, or at least stay off the road for a while :).
