Konstantin Chernonko was 72 when he succeeded Andropov and only lived for a further thirteen months after becoming the leader of the USSR. His demise led to Mikhail Gorbachev's accession. Brezhnev had ruled from 1964 until 1982 and was Andropov's precedessor.

During the 2004 election campaign, Viktor Yushchenko, became ill and it has been claimed that he was poisoned by dioxin to prevent him winning the presidency. In the first round of voting, neither candidate won sufficient support to win the presidency.

In the second round, whilst exit polls suggested that Yushchenko had won convincingly, the official result was that Yanukovych was the winner. Following the Orange Revolution, the supreme court annulled that round of voting and a rerun confirmed Yushchenko as president.
