Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Spanish there are ten types of nominative pronouns. Which one of these is the form of "You -FORMAL-"(Singular)?

Answer: Usted

The ten nominative pronouns are Yo (I), Tú (You -Familiar-), Él (He), Ella (She), Usted (You -Formal-), Nosotros (We), Vosotros (We -this is only used in Spain-), Ellos (They -Masculine-), Ellas (They -Feminine-), and Ustedes (You all). Rule of thumb: use the feminine form of the pronoun ONLY if all of the individuals are female!
2. When you meet someone new, what do you say in Spanish?

Answer: iHola! Mucho gusto.

"iHola! Mucho gusto." translates to "Hello! Nice to meet you." All the other ones are either improper greetings or the wrong language altogether -"Salutations traditionnelles!" is French.
3. This one is about stress (I know, fun!) Where does stress naturally fall on a word that ends in a vowel, an "n" or an "s" in Spanish?

Answer: The second to last syllable

A word such as "levanta" follows this rule. It is pronounced lev-Anta, not Lev-anta. But a word such as "arreglar" is exempt from this rule.
4. True or False: Spain is the only country that has Spanish as its official language.

Answer: False

Spain is definitely not the only country with Spanish as an official language. Most countries in Central America and South America have Spanish as their official language. Contrary to belief, though, Brazil is actually a predominantly Portuguese-speaking country.
5. Before conjugation, verbs are in the form of infinitives. How would you say "to run" in Spanish?

Answer: Correr

Any verb that ends in an "-ar", "-er", or "-ir" is an infinitive. They all mean "to (something)". Runner is not an infinitive in Spanish, "comer" means "to eat", and "trabajar" means "to work".
6. Conjugation is the way that speakers of Spanish connect the subject to the verb. There are six ways that an infinitive can be conjugated for "-ar" and "-er"/"-ir" forms. How would you say "He plays (an instrument)"?

Answer: Él toca

Conjugating is quite easy. Select the pronoun you need, pick the infinitive, chop off the "-ar", "-er", or "-ir", and attach the appropriate ending. The list of appropriate endings is below (The split between -ar and -er/-ir verbs is indicated by a ||):
"-ar" verbs "-er"/"-ir" verbs
yo = -o nosotros = -amos || yo = -o noso. = -emos/-imos
tú = -as vosotros = -áis || tú = -es voso. = -éis
él/ella/Ud = -a ellos/ellas/Uds = -an || él/ella/Ud = -e ellos/ellas/Uds = -en
7. Three commonly-used verb phrases used in Spanish are tener, querer, and necesitar. Which verb type would you use if you wanted to say "I have a lot of homework tonight"?

Answer: Tener

"I have a lot of homework tonight" translates to "Tengo mucha tarea esta noche" in Spanish (Tengo is the conjugated "yo" form of tener. It is an irregular verb, so don't worry about it now). Tener means "to have", querer means "to want", and necesitar means "to need".
8. Now for reflexives. Reflexives basically indicate that the "doer" and the "receiver" are the same. An example is "I washed myself". How would you say "We went to bed"?

Answer: Nosotros nos acostamos

The five types of reflexives are me (yo), te (tú), se (él/ella/Ud.), nos (nosotros), and se (ellos/ellas/Uds.). The two places that you can attach reflexives are in front of the conjugated verb or attached to an infinitive.
9. "Ser" words can be matched up to pronouns to form statements like "I am".

Answer: True

The "ser" words are "soy", "eres", "es", "somos", and "son". "Soy" goes with "yo" to form "I am", "eres" goes with "tú" to form "You are" and so on.
10. For the final question we will be dealing with "ir". "Ir" is the Spanish infinitive for "to go". It is a very irregular conjugated verb. Which of the following is one of the ways you can say "You all go" in Spanish?

Answer: Vais

Yes, "ir" really does conjugate weirdly. "Voy" is "I go", "Vas" is "You go" and "Va" is "he/she/it/you (formal) go(es)".
