Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John was born on November 25, 1960, in Georgetown, Maryland, right after his father had been elected President of the United States in one of the closest elections in American history. Who did President Kennedy run against?

Answer: Richard Nixon

John's father, Jack (as his friends and family called him), had been elected the 35th President of the United States just a couple of weeks before John was born. John's beloved Uncle Bobby, his father's younger brother, was the Attorney General under President Kennedy. John's mother, Jacqueline, was a former "Debutante of the Year" and only 31 years old when she became First Lady.
2. John was the second living child born to his parents. What was his older sister's name?

Answer: Caroline

Caroline Kennedy was born November 27, 1957. From all accounts, she and John always had a close relationship. Their Secret Service code names were "Lark" and "Lyric." Carolyn was his wife, Rory and Kara his cousins, daughters of Bobby and Ted.
3. President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. The now-famous picture of John saluting his father's casket after the funeral service went all over the world. Something else was significant to John on the day of his father's funeral. What was it?

Answer: President Kennedy's funeral was held on John's third birthday

It breaks my heart every time I see that famous photo and think it was also John's third birthday. His party did go on that evening as planned. John later told Larry King that his memories of his father are sketchy, at best.
4. John's family nickname was John-John.

Answer: False

As folklore goes, a member of the press heard the President call to him one day ("John...John."), trying to get his attention and the name stuck. It was only used by the press, never his family, and the name did cause a small bit of annoyance to John.
5. Shortly after his father's death, John moved to New York City with his mother and sister. He was tested as a young boy and his mother was told he had a very high I.Q., prompting Jackie to place him in advanced schools, where he excelled at high levels.

Answer: False

John was never more than an average student, though he did attend respected schools. By all accounts, he has been called intelligent but never excelled academically. Later in life, he was diagnosed with both dyslexia and ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). He was also very absent-minded. As an adult, he had to clip his keys to his belt loop so he wouldn't continually lose them!
6. John had the privilege of meeting his childhood hero as a young boy. Which famous athlete did John admire and respect for most of his life?

Answer: Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali was one of the only 315 people who attended John's private, invitation-only, memorial service.
7. On October 25, 1968, Jackie wed shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis in Greece, with John and his sister looking on. The murder of whom is said to have prompted her to marry Onassis?

Answer: Robert Kennedy

Jackie was terrified after Bobby was killed. It is said she told someone "If they are killing Kennedys, my children are number one targets." Ari offered her stability and security out of the country. The fact that he was, at the time, the richest man in the world, gave her stability for her children's future. Ari was never anything but kind to John.
8. John F. Kennedy graduated from prep school and went on to college in the fall of 1979. What Ivy League University did John attend?

Answer: Brown

Though he was a legacy at Harvard, he chose not to attend his father's alma mater. At Brown he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and received his degree in American history in 1983. When taking a class on the Vietnam War, John always referred to his father as "the President".
9. In college, John explored a hobby that he was passionate about but his mother refused to let him pursue. What was it?

Answer: acting

John appeared with rave reviews in theatre productions at Brown but his mother was adamant about him not having a career in acting. His only ally in this was his uncle, actor Peter Lawford. When Lawford died in the early 1980's, John's potential acting career died with him. John did appear, briefly as himself, in an episode of "Murphy Brown" and loved the experience.

By the way, the other hobby his mother was adamant about him not pursuing? Flying.
10. After graduating from Brown in 1983, John attended Law School at New York University. Did John's father also have a law degree?

Answer: no

Though the majority of Presidents have held the occupation of attorney, President Kennedy studied government and international relations in college. His official occupation was that of a writer. John Jr. was an assistant district attorney in New York City for a short while.
11. After the 1994 death of his mother, John founded a political magazine. What was the name of his publication?

Answer: George

Named for George Washington, when John was asked why he picked the title he was quoted in saying, "I figured if I named it Daddy people would think it was about parenting." It's not surprising he choose journalism since his father was a Pulitzer Prize winning author and his mother a photographer in her younger life, a book editor in her post-White House days.

His most talked-about cover was in honor of President Clinton's 50th birthday where actress Drew Barrymore dressed up as Marilyn Monroe, the caption reading, "Happy Birthday Mr. President." Obviously poking fun at Marilyn's birthday tribute to President Kennedy many years before during a time when, it is believed, she and the President were having an affair; it is a move, I would bet my life, John would never have done if his mother was still living.
12. John ended his reign as America's most eligible bachelor when he married Carolyn Bessette on September 21, 1996. For many years before Carolyn, he lived with which actress?

Answer: Daryl Hannah

Carolyn was working in Public Relations for Calvin Klein when she and John met. It was, for him, love at first sight.
13. It is widely reported John was a strong believer in the conspiracy theories surrounding his father's death and was even a consultant on the film "JFK".

Answer: False

John wasn't one to talk about his father to his friends, claimed to have never seen "JFK", and would change the subject or leave the room if a conversation about his father became too personal. As a small boy, however, he would bring his friends into his room so they could listen to recordings of his father's speeches.
14. Having had an obsession with aircraft since he lived in the White House, John received his pilot's license in 1998. The ID numbers on his plane were N529JK. What significance did this have to him?

Answer: they were his father's birthday-May 29, and his initials

John F Kennedy was born May 29, 1917. John chose the ID number himself. When he was a child, John called Air Force One "his plane."
15. John's plane went down into the ocean on July 16, 1999, killing him instantly along with his wife, Carolyn, and her sister, Lauren. Where is John F. Kennedy Jr buried?

Answer: he was cremated and his ashes are scattered at sea

John was cremated and his ashes were buried at sea off Martha's Vineyard near Hyannis Port, the home his father grew up in. There are many things John never got to do in his life; run for office, have a child, live longer than his father.
