Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I need a good old burger, so I march up to the counter and ask for what?

Answer: han bao bao

Most places in China now refer to a burger as just 'han bao', but the full name is 'han bao bao'.
2. No self-respecting burger would be complete without a side order of fries, so I ask for some what?

Answer: shu tiao

'Shu tiao' just means potato strips. You can add the word 'zha' in front, meaning deep-fried, but the simple 'shu tiao' will work every time.
3. Hmmm, how about a drink to go with my meal? I think I'll take a coke, so I ask for a big glass of what?

Answer: ke kou ke le

'Ke Kou Ke Le' - a transliteration of the name Coca Cola, is often cited as one of the best examples of a Chinese name for a Western product. Not only does it sound recognisable to even a non-Chinese speaker, but translated loosely, it means 'happiness in the mouth'!
4. A change of pace now, and some Italian food is starting to sound really good. In my best accent I ask for 'bi sa bing', which is Chinese for pizza.

Answer: True

'Bi sa' is a direct transliteration of the word 'pizza' and 'bing' is a general Chinese word for a flat cake.
5. My friend prefers pasta to pizza. What is the Chinese term for pasta?

Answer: yi da li mian tiao

Literally this means 'italian noodles'. Most Chinese people will tell you that spaghetti originally came from China, when Marco Polo discovered Chinese noodles during his travels and took then back to Italy.
6. Now how would I ask for a tuna sandwich in Chinese?

Answer: jin qiang yu san ming zhi

San ming zhi is another example of transliteration. It's the closest sound in Chinese to the English word sandwich. Jin qiang yu is tunafish in Chinese, although sometimes you see the word ' tu na yu' being used. Yu is Chinese for fish.
7. The Golden Arches are beckoning! What is the Chinese name for McDonalds?

Answer: Mai Dang Lao

McDonalds are now all over China, and new stores are opening up at a frightening pace.
8. My friend has just asked me if I would like to finish with 'shui guo sha la'. What is this the Chinese for?

Answer: Fruit Salad

Sha la simply means salad, and shui guo means fruit. Quite often a fruit salad is served as an appetiser in Chinese restaurant, and the fruit is coated in mayo.
9. I tell my friend that I would prefer to finish up with some ice cream. How do I ask for ice cream in Chinese?

Answer: bing qi lin

'Bing' is Chinese for ice, but I have never found a convincing explanation why 'qi lin' is the rest of the word!
10. Finally, some coffee is required. I head to the nearest Starbucks. How do I say Starbucks in Chinese?

Answer: Xing Ba Ke

Starbucks has become very popular in China - in major cities they are all over the place. Funnily enough, a lot of local Chinese coffee shops with green circles for their logos have also started to appear...
