SEPT. 28, 1985 -- RENO, Nev. -- Reno High School kicker Dirk Borgognone has set what appeared to be a record for the longest field goal in the history of football. The pre-season All-America hit from 68 yards out in the Huskies' 34-14 victory over the Sparks Railroaders in Northern Nevada AAA play Friday. Coach Mike Jones first said the kick was between 67 and 68 yards. The record was 67 yards set by Richard Erxleben of Texas in 1977. But, after examining video tape of the game, Jones said the kick was definitely from 68 yards, which would be a record.

The record for the longest field goal in high school is one that is often debated because of the fact that so many of these are strictly verified by eye witness account with no video evidence. Another thing is that sometimes high school coaches reach agreements to swap free kicks so some of these guys can attempt records without the defense trying to block the kick. Regardless of the circumstances if you can get a football 65-70 yards through the goal posts then that is an impressive feat.
