Subject: Celebrities I Have Known and Met

Posted by: mnbates
Date: Aug 19 06

Suggested by Lemmyrules, IndieQueen, satguru and others. A thread for people to post their stories about meeting famous people. I will start with one of the first celebrities I have met. Ian Hendry, the actor, I was walking down the train from London to Swindon, carrying my suitcase on a trolley when I heard someone say "You know if that had wheels you could pull it along", there wasn't enough room to do this, I turned to give this bloke a few choice words and saw that it was Ian Hendry, so I sat opposite him and we chatted.
He consumed large numbers of gin miniatures in the hour from London to Swindon, but it didn't seem to affect him. He said he was visiting his mother in Bath (I was visiting my father in Swindon). We talked about films, books and families, a very pleasant bloke. I was saddened to hear of his death on Christmas eve, 1984.

Regards,

Tin

Do sports figures count?

Well, as I mentioned elsewhere, I met Eddie Izzard after a show. He was nice enough to allow us to take pictures and I got to hug him. He looks really good in a dress by the way. I met Martin Sheen and Rob Reiner at a poltical rally a few years back, both were very nice. Helen Hunt is not very nice. I met her at the same rally. I've met quite a few obscure musicians over the years. Oh, and I talked to Penn Gilette from Penn and Teller once. He called the radio station I was working for at the time.

Yes, sports figures count, any celebrity, but preferably people that have actually done something, if they have just won on a 'reality' show or 'gameshow' they aren't interesting, i.e. I don't care if you met the winner of 'Big Brother' or the latest winner on 'Millionaire' or some other game show. If you've met, Henry Aaron, Dan Marino, Andrew Strauss, David Beckham or any other sports star, or Tom Wolfe, Maya Angelou, JK Rowling or CS Lewis or any other writer or Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Emma Thompson or Liz Hurley or any other actor or actress; or Lemmy (Kilminster), Ozzy (Osbourne), Gene Simmons or Bob Dylan or any other music star. Just stories about any of this type of celeb.

Regards,

Tin

No these are the real deal. I hung out with Ron Hextall(
flyer goalie) when he played here in Kalamazoo.
Also, in my younger years I was a coach-and coached Duane Young(MSU-starting TE for Chargers in Super Bowl)-he still calls me coach. maybe not the a-listers, but special to me nontheless.

And what are they like jarsma, what was Duane like to coach, or Ron like to hang out with. I had the odd pint or three with Ian Dury who was one of the most talented people I have ever known, a truly great songwriter and, later on, actor but as he would have said "Enough of this bollo, it's your round."

Tin

I had "dewey" in his first 3 years of high school. I was his baseball coach. His parents brought him up well. Great team kid, coachable and teachable-a coaches dream.
The one thing I remember about Ron-we were at a club having a couple of gingerales, and he had just been told by the coach he would not be an NHL goalie and was pretty down. Someone didnt know how to judge talent-as anyone who followed hockey knows he was a fine player.

I trained at the gym with Jeff Stinco from Simple Plan.
I had a drink in a club with Saku Koivu, Montreal Canadian's captain.
I served Eric Christian Olsen from "Tru Calling" at the Montreal Casino.
Jessica Simpson had lunch in the restaurant I worked at in Virginia Beach, VA.
I know Marie Carmen, who is a French Canadian singer.
I know about 10 CFL players.
I served Yanic Truesdale from "Gilmore Girls" when I was a bank teller.
I hung out with Jonas, a rising English Canadian singer.
My friend Harold made an appearance in "Romeo must die" starring Aaliyah and Jet Li.
and that's all I can think of right now...

I went to middle school with New Orleans Saints linebacker Alfred Fincher. Mark Rosen, a pitcher in the Arizona Diamondbacks system, was a classmate of mine. As for other sports-related experiences, I was once the ball boy for the New England Revolution and have met (currently unemployed) NASCAR driver Ward Burton. Believe it or not, I have also been in the same room as Olympic wrestlers Kendall Cross, Jeff Blatnick, and Bruce Baumgartner. In the politics category, I have met Governor Mitt Romney and Lt. Governor Kerry Healey, Congressman Stephen Lynch, and State Representative John Rogers. Nothing on entertainment or music, however.

Most recently (pardon those from the forums who have already read this...) I met Harry Hill, one of my favourite comedians, when he made a film opposite my grandma's house. I went twice in his three days and besides being too overcome to remember to ask to take his picture, he spent a good deal of his time talking to me, looking through my autograph book and letting me on the set (till the guard chucked me off again).

OK, I can't mention Big Brother... So watching the World Cup this summer on TV saw Tim Cahill score for Australia and remembered shoving a pen and paper in his hand as he arrived on the pitch playing at Dulwich Hamlet for Millwall.

One thing about footballers is many at all divisions often end up playing internationals and seeing Peter Crouch twice as a newcomer playing for Tottenham and QPR now being one of England's stars is always satisfying, as well as seeing ex-England players playing for smaller teams especially the great Ray Wilkins.

I also worked in the family music shop for many years in my spare time and met most of the great classical and jazz guitarists one way or another.

I just went to a Convention, and I was sitting in a hotel lobby with my husband - and he starts tapping me - trying to get me to look at something (I was busy reading), when I look up, Rip Taylor is standing behind him saying "He means, Look at ME!" We also had an interesting elevator encounter with Denise Crosby. One of the funniest things I've had happen, once, I held open a door for the guy that played in all of those "Ernest" movies - Jim Varney - and while I was holding the door open, a woman was running down the street towards us yelling "Hey Vern, Hey Vern!"

During my first year of teaching at Penns Grove High School, Bruce Willis was a senior there.

Hulk Hogan, Ashley Tisdale, Dylan and Cole Sprouse, Christy (from the 'Apprentice'), Bob Saget, Aarron Carter, Dena Rizzo, Geo Hubela, Beth Hubela, Billy Crawford, Mr. Wiggles... wow, this list lasts long... Bruce Vilanch, Brandi (don't know the last name, but was in 'Wicked'), Tiffany (don't know last name, in 'Wicked'), cast of 'Wicked', cast of 'Fame' on Broadway, Bon Jovi (I'm a Jr. Pro cheerleader for the Philidelphia Soul), Brooke Hogan, Panic! at the Disco, P!nk... I think I'll stop here...

Tin, you're very fortunate to have met Ian Dury, he was one of the greats. I've chatted with lots of members of bands no one on here will probably heard of so I wouldn't call them celebs, but special encounters to me nonetheless. The most awestruck I've ever been was when I was standing outside of a second hand record shop having a smoke in Notting Hill and Nick Cave walked past me, I wished I'd had the courage to say something as he passed me but I just stood there, moth open looking like an idiot no doubt. My mum courted Mick Ronson for a while, she said he was lovely, so why she dumped him to go out with a butcher I'll never know.

my first job was in a small retail outlet in Regent St, where from time to to time, celebrities would come in. Amongst those that I served, were Peter Sellers, Graham Chapman, (these two were my favourites) Sir Adrian Bolt, Frank Muir, Petula Clark and Judy Dench. Although, because of the etiqette involved, I couldn't really enter into any personal conversation, I can say , unresevedly though, that all these celebrities were decent in their manners. The only problem I did encounter, was with a minor celebrity, D.J. Dave Lee Travers, who asked for discount on an item, and when refused, used the classic phrase, no kidding, "Do you know who I am".
My partner, also met Ian Hendry when she, and her ex ran The Salisbury pub in Charing Cross Rd. He asked her out, despite her husband being behind the bar at the time.

On Sunday, I met the Season 2 cast of "So You Think You can Dance" at a covention/workshop. They were SO nice! I even got stuck on the elevator with them! We had a whole conversation, it was very funny. There are also TONS of HILARIOUS stories, but mail me for info. Anyway, Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco is my first cousin, so I met the whole band and some others like Taking Back Sunday, Fall Out Boy, and The Killers, if I haven't already said this.

I hope this counts. Not me but my mum, she sat in the movies with Sean Connery, (before he became famous) it was a double date and he was dating her friend.

Margaret Hamilton (wicked witch from "Wizard of Oz") At the time she was doing a musical version at the St. Louis Muny outdoor theater. Reconized her at the old Gaslight Square in St. Louis, MO and she gave me her autograph on the plays program (which ironically we had just saw that evening) Sat at our table and spoke to my family 10-15 minutes!
Also met Paul Newman at a local racetrack. He was driving the Budwiser Formula car at the time. HANDSOME! He just had a glow around him. Walked right up to me and shook my hand and asked if I had enjoyed the race. Plus there was Robert Plant from Led Zepp and Eric Clapton plus Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull on Miami Beach. He was by himself sitting in the sand. Bored yet?!
