My first thought was 70s? Good music from the 70s? No chance! And then to my surprise I realised that there were a few good tunes. There really is no way that my choices can compete with the sheer uplifting heart-wrenching beauty of David's list, but here goes anyway. 10 CC "I'm Not In Love" Blondie "Heart Of Glass" Boomtown Rats "Rat Trap" and "I Don't Like Mondays" Kate Bush "Wuthering Heights" Chicago "If You Leave Me Now" Julie Covington "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" Windsor Davies & Don Estelle "Whispering Grass" John Denver "Annie's Song" Ian Dury & The Blockheads "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" David Essex "Gon na Make You A Star" Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel "Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)" Don McLean "Vincent" "American Pie" Nilsson "Without You" Leo Sayer "When I Need You" Sweet "Blockbuster" Just about anything by Gilbert O'Sullivan and Slade. And I shan't attempt to justify them because it would swamp the thread - sorry! Reply #5. Sep 08 09, 5:13 AM |

No, judging from what he listed I'm pretty sure he meant "any song by John Denver" Reply #6. Sep 08 09, 9:58 AM |

David, I think there is one song conspicuously missing from your list I'm sure it must have just slipped your mind judging from your choices "The Night Chicago Died" Paper Lace. Thanks for your extensive input I hadn't thought of some of those hits. Reply #7. Sep 08 09, 10:35 AM |

Paco, you were right about John Denver. As far as "The Night Chicago Died", I have never heard of that song. Reply #8. Sep 08 09, 10:40 AM |

It's like "Billy, don't be a Hero," but worse. Although the version of Billy by Bo Donaldson and his cohorts was even worse, in a cheesy, vaselined-teeth way, than Paper Lace's version. They're all on YouTube. Reply #9. Sep 08 09, 11:06 AM |

OK I’m going to break down and add some. I didn’t want to do this on a topic question such as this where I professed soliciting lists and info and did not want to create it to give you all my opinion. But frankly I’m a bit self conscious about Schoonie’s and David’s lists being longer than mine so I’m just going to maybe force it longer myself and maybe inspire some more great lists of great 70 songs. And while I missed this time as well as the 60s I am going with what I heard my parents listen to that spawned my interest in this genre ( which I will break into three sub genres as the sounds seem different to me). So to me these are the songs that were made so the 70s could exist. They are in (roughly) chronological order but no order of preference and may or may not even be among my favorites but they just seem like classic 70s to me. Horse No Name-America Brandy-Looking Glass Your So Vain- Carly Simon (and I’m pretty sure that song is about me) Joy to the World- 3 Dog Night Maggie May- Rod Stewart Your Song- Elton John One of These Nights- Eagles Anything by KC& the Sunshine Band Best of My Love- Eagles Almost anything by Fleetwood Mac A lot of Steely Dan, ELO and Foreigner Two out of Three Ain’t Bad-Meatloaf Life’s Been Good to Me- Joe Walsh Hotel California- Eagles Play That Funky Music- Wild Cherry Stay’n Alive- Bee Gees Logical Song-Supertramp My Sharona- The Knack Reply #13. Was he a budding musician in school? I knew a bunch of decent to good guitarists, but the only ones who became anything were System of a Down. (I am not saying they were good musicians. lol) Reply #19. Sep 11 09, 1:27 PM |
