Subject: Odd dreams

Do you have odd dreams that you canĀ“t explain? I had one this week. I was talking to my dog. I had the Dog-Human dictionary and with the help of it I told her "p-p-p-p-p", which meant in Doggish: "Look at the stars how bright they are shining":)

Had another "getting lost" dream again. Usually these dreams involve me getting lost at the local airport with only my dog for company, but the last two were different. In the first one, I was alone and lost in an unfamiliar train station and in the most recent one, I was lost in a busy city somewhere overseas. Besides England and Australia, the only other country I've been to is Bali, so I'm assuming that's where I was. The strangest thing is that my Dad and one of my TAFE teachers were in my dream, too.

Did I really start this topic? Incredible. Were there times when I spoke on Chat Boards and people answered? Unbelievable. :)

I often have "getting lost" dreams. I don't have to be anywhere unfamiliar either. I start out on a perfectly normal journey and then everything slows down massively or becomes subject to delays and diversions or the whole dream goes off piste. I think they are frustration dreams.

I saw a programme about sleep and insomnia the other day and the researchers were saying that the day's information is processed in your sleep. That's when things in your short term memory get processed into your longer term memory and are better retained. Children who suffer from chronic insomnia are poorer at learning. They did some tests to demonstrate this.

I think all our weird and wacky dreams are just the transfer process taking place. The way I've thought about dreams myself is that the stresses of the day can leave you tense like a coiled spring even though you may not always be aware of it and sleep releases the tension of the spring, but it's like when a tape recorded is played quickly backwards or a blown up balloon is released, there's an uncontrolled and random element to the release, and if we are aware of our dreams, that randomness is responsible for them not making sense and being odd.

Perhaps it's our brains being "overwhelmed" while we're asleep, but with a good outcome rather than a negative one.

I think there may be many different types of dreams. Some may be psychological in nature; some may be brought on by drugs or chemicals, some may be memories of past lives, some may be caused by dead loved ones trying to contact us, some may just be our brains having fun. Who really knows?

Yes, Jolana - why wouldn't they?

Daver, I love the thought of our brains having fun.

Another one is our sleeping brain telling us uncomfortable truths that our waking brain doesn't want to admit.

Lesley, are you really surprised or is it a hint? :) Anyway, happy birthday!

Only surprised that you seemed to be surprised that you were getting answered. Not hinting at anything, honest. O:) x

Thank you! Another year of annoying people! Life is good. ;)

I often dream of filthy, overflowing toilets. If that is a reflection of my state of mind, no wonder I feel like I'm going mad.

I recently had a dream that I was punching a police officer in the face. He encouraged me to do it and complimented my technique. If you did it enough times, you could get a 2 for 1 offer on coke from a market stall.

I often dream that I'm trying to walk or run away from something, but my legs feel really heavy or just won't move much at all. Walking is a huge effort, and when I wake up I feel sick and nervous. I normally speed walk everywhere and I'm always rushing. Being stuck in slow-motion is a horrible nightmare for me.

Two nights before Tom Petty died, I had a dream... that Tom Petty died. I hadn't read or heard anything on the news. It came completely out of left field.

It was a complete nightmare.

I can explain two of those dreams...

I often have a dream where I'm in a vehicle (varies) with someone else driving... translation: I feel like I'm not in control of my life.

I've had some seriously bizarre dreams lately, but I want to talk about them somewhere else. Like, maybe in the Supernatural Blog.

Acryliclink. Your first dream made me laugh out loud. I can identify with the bizarreness of that and with your dreams of slow progress.

I had a disaster dream last night. I was at some event and looking after a friend in a wheelchair who is completely dependent. I managed to lose her, and lose my bag. I had a phone in my pocket but it was down and I'd no charger. It was a pay as you go phone and I'd no cash or money of any sort, and then I got lost trying to get back to the house. Thankfully my cat woke me up from that one.

Mix, interesting dream. Have you ever had "running dreams?" I've had a real spate of them recently. I"m always trying to get somewhere (or away from somewhere) and am in a hurry, but never make my destination. Also, do any of you dream in color or have dreams of those who have passed away? I've always dreamed in color, especially bright colors. About a month ago, I had a dream that really spooked me. I was in a small rowboat on a lake. I saw a cabin on the shore with a light burning in the window and decided to check it out because I was lost and really thirsty. I moored the boat and knocked on the door. A familiar voice called, "Come in," so I did. Sitting at the fire place were my grandmother, mother, and a favorite great aunt (all deceased). My mother looked at me and said "We've been waiting for you." Then I woke up, my heart beating fast. I've been thinking of that dream ever since. I think I can look at that dream in several ways, (a warning, a presentiment of death, a longing for those I've lost) but I'd be curious to get some of your opinions. Anne

Hi Memorycat. I don't think I dream in colour because I don't remember any colours. I couldn't tell you the colour of anything in my dreams. Dreams where I get delayed and don't get to my destination are the ones that happen most frequently for me. I call them frustration dreams. I lost my parents when I was quite young (Dad when I was 16, Mum when I was 23) and for many years I would occasionally have dreams about them being alive. Those dreams were rather comforting.

The other night I had a dream that the houses at the back of our house were on fire and we had to leave our house and stood opposite waiting for it to burn or for the fire brigade to arrive.
Last night I dreamt that I went into my bank and wasn't happy with the level of information they gave so asked to be taken through some procedures with them to understand them. They took umbrage and said I could no longer bank with them. I said I thought their reaction was over the top. They were adamant, so I said I'd report them to the Ombudsman. They laughed. I said I would tell him they laughed at that. They laughed again.

Last Night I dreamt I went on a coach trip to the North Pole. It was quite touristy when we got there, but the cold air triggered an asthma attack and I spent most of the time struggling to breathe.
