Subject: The Hall Of Shame

Songs which should never have been allowed out of the recording studio. Those truly awful mega sellers, One Hit Blunders, you name it. I just hope this thread doesn't polarise people and that it results in unanimity amongst discerning music fans. Here are three, including two by my all time favourite singer. Even geniuses make mistakes:

Strangers In The Night by Frank Sinatra
My Way by Frank Sinatra

Achy Breaky Heart by Cyrus The Elder (Billy Ray)

True Love by Madonna (almost all her songs to be honest, a notable exception being Like A Prayer. She was, however, terrific in the movie Desperately Seeking Susan)

Mixed feelings about Madonna. Not crazy about her earlier/later work. I don't know her too well, but the songs of hers I DO know... I love (Like A Prayer/Secret/Frozen)!

Latest entry for "No Need To Cover This Song" goes to:
Africa by Weezer

I love the original. I get Weezer's fans had begged them for this for a long time, but the original is amazing and the cover ain't.

The cover to beat all covers.....

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by William Shatner
(Yes, the Star Trek guy. You may need to listen to this ten times to make sure it's real and not a nightmare you're having)

Whilst I have never rated Mr. Shatner as an actor, I have to admit, as a singer he is even worse.

He talks rather than sings and crucifies any song he covers, i'm never sure whether he thinks he's good or if he's taking the mickey, but he keeps on doing it.

I agree with you both, C30 and Bizarre.

I think Shatner took the 'boldly go where no man has gone before' Star Trek thing too literally.

I mentioned this next entry on another thread. I defy anyone to listen to this and not wonder if Sinatra was the master of occasional artistic brain fades with his choice of songs to record.

Mama Will Bark by Frank Sinatra and Dagmar.

We Didn't Start The Fire by Billy Joel

Don't have a problem with the name dropping and references to world events but musically it's very ordinary.

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by William Shatner... perhaps should be the first officially inducted into the Hall of Shame. Makes me laugh, and that's not good! Nice choice!

Disco Duck by Rick Dees and Cast Of (Exceedingly Idiotic) Idiots

Nothing worse than a parody which isn't funny and where its only redeeming feature is its potential to appear on this type of list.

Every big hit by ABBA except Dancing Queen and Knowing Me Knowing You.

(Ring Ring, Mamma Mia, Fernando, Money Money Money, Bang A Boomerang etc...utter tosh!)

Working Class Man by Jimmy Barnes
(The man who doesn't sing. He screams. Didn't scream as much in Cold Chisel and their songs were infinitely better than this one anyway. The non thinking man's John Mellencamp)

I kind of love "Dirty Laundry," Jen. Sorry!

How about "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies

Everything about that is just so wrong, including the fake band.

And as much as I love Joni Mitchell, this song just baffles me. She writes such emotional songs, and then she writes THIS? And most of it is spoken, not sung. It's so awful!

"Twisted" -- by Joni Mitchell (On the 'Court and Spark Album')

My analyst told me
That I was right out of my head
The way he described it
He said I'd be better dead than live
I didn't listen to his jive
I knew all along
That he was all wrong
And I knew that he thought
I was crazy but I'm not, oh no

My analyst told me
That I was right out of my head
He said I'd need treatment
But I'm not that easily led
He said I was the type
That was most inclined
When out of his sight
To be out of my mind
And he thought I was nuts
No more ifs or ands or buts

They say as a child
I appeared a little bit wild
With all my crazy ideas
But I knew what was happening
I knew I was a genius
What's so strange when you know
That you're a wizard at three?
I knew that this was meant to be

Now I heard little children
Were supposed to sleep tight
That's why I got into the vodka one night
My parents got frantic
Didn't know what to do
But I saw some crazy scenes
Before I came to
Now do you think I was crazy?
I may have been only three
But I was swinging

They all laugh at angry young men
They all laugh at Edison
And also at Einstein
So why should I feel sorry
If they just couldn't understand
The idiomatic logic
That went on in my head
I had a brain
It was insane

Oh, they used to laugh at me
When I refused to ride
On all those double decker buses
All because there was no driver on the top

My analyst told me
That I was right out of my head
But I said dear doctor
I think that it's you instead
Because I have got a thing
That's unique and new
To prove it I'll have
The last laugh on you
'Cause instead of one head
I got two
And you know two heads are better than one

Disagree Elle, that song's the perfect way to end that album. And she sings/speaks it well. And it's not a song she wrote. Annie Ross wrote it, I think.

But the important thing is....you're back! Now, don't get ill again. That's an order! xo

Joni recorded a song she didn't write herself? I didn't think she was capable of that! The things I learn in here...

I'm doing my best to remain upright, while remaining horizontal. So far, so good! But that song... ugh!

Anything by John Paul Young and Hush.

Anecdote Time....
I went to see Alice Cooper in concert on his Welcome To My Nightmare tour. Hush were the supporting band. First and only time I've ever seen a supporting band booed by so many in the audience. Weird, because Aussies in general are so supportive of local artists. But that's how awful Hush were.

Holy! I can't believe I forgot to add this:

Life Is A Highway by Rascal Flatts

I love the original so much. Everyone seems to love this version but not me. I consider it an abomination.

My all time least favourite cover
'Under The Bridge' by All Saints

"Hey, let's take a searing, meaningful classic and turn it into a plodding R&B snoozefest..."
