So I am admitted in MBBS course in SN medical college, Agra. I got admission on 16th August 2018.

Now a new phase of me is starting, where I have to live far away from my family, I have to manage everything on my own.

In this thread I will be sharing my experiences, my new and renovated thoughts and all about everyday going.

Regards
Elai

Since I am at a new place away from the family, I am bored a lot currently!

It's hard to imagine you bored, Elai. You seem so outgoing. You'll make friends. Also, your studies will occupy much of your time.

And... if you are really, really bored... and can't think of anything to do, remember that FunTrivia is here... we'll be with you wherever you go :-)

Actually I had fever, so I did not attend class yesterday and today. Moreover tomorrow is Sunday (holiday) and day after tomorrow is also a holiday on occasion of Janmasthami!

I have made some friends but they are quite boring. I am missing my two besties, one of them is in Bhopal and the other in Delhi and I am in Agra!

Moreover I am youngest in my batch. I am 17 and my batchmates are 19 or 20 or 21 or 22 and some are even 23. You see our interest varies so much.

I live alone in my room. I am missing most my 2 and a half years old cute sister. She get very excited when I have video chat with her. Missing delecious home food as well!

Home cooked meals and a cute little sister... Yes, you miss those. How often will you be able to get home?

And maybe your besties can visit you, or you can visit them? It's especially hard, at your age... the perils of being young and smart, at the same time.... but rewarding, in the end.

Are there events you can attend? You must get out of the four walls of your room. Staying inside is not the way to make friends. And, even if you don't make friends in your batch, get out, and see Agra. Wander the streets. Rejoice in your good fortune to be able to have these experiences.

I want to know what you see out your window.

Yup terracorra, I am just 17 and now in first year MBBS!

While my batchmates are older to me, half of them are 19 and rest 20 or 20+. I feel a bit awkward there. Boys are older than girls. There are few girls who are 18, but still I am youngest in our batch of 150 students.

Now reply to postie!

¤ Our college started on 20th August. I went to home on 24th after attending class as there was festival of Rakshabandhan(if you are interested to know about the festival ask me) on 26th. Since my cute little sister was calling me, I can't resist myself without going back to home. I came back on 29th (skipped 3 classes as now a days only introduction of teachers is going on).

After this visit I would be able to go to home in November during my birthday. I am lucky as my birthday is one day before deepavali this year. So there will be a week's holiday and I could enjoy my birthday at home! :) But that day will come after two months.

I don't know when I will be visiting home after that!

¤ I met my bestie on 25th when I visited home in Lucknow, he has also returned to home for Rakshabandhan. I will meet him back on my birthday that is on 6th November, lucky! He is my bestie from past 8 years! But we can't visit each other in the cities where we study right now as they are far away!

¤ I have complete roof for me. Where I do skipping. Outside my window I can see a large ground. Interestingly more monkeys are there in the park than the humans. There are lot of monkeys here in Agra. There are few squirrels as well, and a few parrots too sit near my window! My house owner has two turtles. And there are two lizards in my room, I am glad to reside at this place as it is an open area, a silent place and I can breath fresh and cold air. I like my room, I am lucky that I am staying here. As I had few friends of my batch (just 4, I don't talk much to them), they reside in very congested place while my room is spacious and beautiful scene is there at the same price they pay!

¤ We students of first year are instructed not to wander around as the seniors can do your ragging if they could identify you. You know about all the boys in batch have their hair on head shaven because seniors asked them. I still have hairs as I am not afraid of them, there are 4-5 more boys who have hairs.

¤ I am trying to make some girls my friend who seems to be better than boys. Boys in my batch are old and boring. They are not as me!

MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) is not quite the same thing as American Medical School. In the US, students take premedical courses in undergraduate universities (where they may or in some cases may not get an undergraduate degree) and then are admitted to Medical Schools where they will obtain an MD degree after four more years (or a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) degree if they were admitted to an osteopathic medical school.) The MBBS program, found in India and other former British colonies, among other places, is a bit different. The program is a condensed and compressed (very rigorous) undergraduate program that awards a dual degree that entitles recipients to begin the practice of medicine upon completion, but, in its first year, is more akin to a college freshman in the US in an accelerated premed curriculum than to a first year med student.

As an aside, the number of US medical school graduates has been, for a number of years (due to poor US science education in my opinion) been insufficient to provide the number of new doctors the US requires for its medical care needs. Consequently, many foreign medical graduates (including graduates with MBBS degrees) are admitted into the US each year under H-1B Visa programs to begin residency training in the US. Some US residency programs are almost completely dependent on foreign medical graduates to fill their slots each year.

It sounds like you live in a lovely place. Lots to see out your window. It will be nice to be able to watch the animals when you need to clear your head from your studies. It's also good that you have quiet.

I looked up your school, and I see that it is very difficult to get into. You must not skip classes teachers don't like that, and you want them to know that you are serious about your work. Even the introductions are useful to attend.

Yes, stay away from the seniors. When you are a senior, remember how you feel, now, and leave the new freshmen alone!

So, you like the ladies ;-) They are sometimes more serious about studying than the boys... and they are pretty to look at :-D

Yes, please tell us about the Rakshabandhan festival. What does it celebrate, and what kinds of foods and activities?

Hi Brian, I don't have any knowledge about how is the medical education in US.

I would say that I definitely don't like education system in India. There are various reasons behind it.

BTW, I don't fee that MBBS is much compressed in MBBS. MBBS compromise of 4.5 year study + 1 year compulsory internship!

In the duration of 4.5 years we are taught a total of 19 subjects. But in the first year we will be studying just 3 of it (Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry) and some part of community medicine.

Moreover, for getting admitted in a good government college in India, we need to qualify an exam called NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). See how much competition is there in that exam. This year in 2018, about 13.5 lakhs students appeared in the exam while the number of seats for admission in a government college is 10,000. The exam is of 720 marks with 180 question and you are given only 3 hrs or 180 minutes to solve those 180 questions. In the exam all the three subject physics, chemistry and biology is asked! It take a lot of hard work to prepare for exam and then get admission in a good government college!

In result 50% are declared qualified. That is about 6.75 lakhs student. The total number of seats is 65,000 (that includes all deemed and central as well as government colleges). Student belonging to the family with normal earning could never get into deemed universities due to the fees, that is for rich guys only. So for us the number of seats are 10,000!

Let me acknowledge you about the fees difference between a deemed and government college! (I will give approx values in dollars)

¤ The fees of a medical government college in India - 3000 dollars for complete course! Or 3000/5=600 dollars per year= 50 dollars/ month! And we begin to earn just when our internship starts.

¤ The fees of a deemed/private medical college in India - 125,000 dollars for complete course = 25000 dollars/ year = 2083 dollars/ month.

So in deemed universities you need to pay about $2100 / month while in government college you just need to pay $3000 for complete course!

+ Moreover, there is no value of a doctor in India if he has not done MD or MS, even if he has license to practice, patients will never go to him unless he is a MD or MS. This is a fact in India that you need to do either MD or MS after MBBS to really start your practice.

(I will be replying to your question postie in tomorrow's college break).

I hope I am clear about what I meant to tell about medical teaching in India.

I am liking this place, the place I reside in. There is not to observe, the behavior of monkeys, squirrels and sometimes in the park a group of eagles rest mainly after rains. But I am quite away from all my batchmates. I have to manage many things on my own, especially washing my clothes and pressing them and fill buckets every evening. Still I am enjoying.

Many a times I feel bored in classes, they teach using power point slides and it goes quite boring. Half of the professor bore a lot while there are few who teaches very interesting. I wait for their lectures. Huh... Since most of lectures are boring, you have to work hard at home on your own.

Those foolish seniors force us to go with them and they do ragging. They have made everyone shave off their hairs of head. While I have not done that yet. They threaten a lot to us. Anyways I am trying to keep away from them as long as possible, I don't want to argue with them. I am not that kind, I would never do ragging. I am bit sensible about it.

I like them but from a far away distance. I just like their beauty as girls in India have no common sense. I watch them sometimes when I am bored during the lecture, ;) but I rarely talk to them. I focus more on being a good personality than anything else.

Rakshabandhan is a Hindu festival. In this festival sister ties a thread, which is considered the bond between a brother and sister. The brother promises to the sister that he will always protect and love her. I can't explain foods cooked on this occasion as I know about them only in the Hindi language. Sorry!

Something interesting to tell about.

In our college dissection of cadavers have started. It is a very odd but nice experience. I can't bear the smell of formalin and have got allergic to it. We are doing the dissection of pectoral region. Till now we have removed fat from the body and have come across deltoid muscle, pectoralis major muscle and cephalic vein. We have also seen the lobules of mammary glands as our cadaver body is female. Tomorrow we will remove Pectoralis major muscle and will come across pectoralis minor muscle, clavipectoral fascia and few more nerves, arteries and veins.

I forgot to tell that we also came across Axillary vein while we put incision on Pectoralis major. Tomorrow we will remove pectoralis major completely.

Please let me know if you want to know more about these muscles and veins I talked about. It will do me a good revision.

(( Litecruzer: Have you been to visit the Taj Mahal yet? ))

Yep, but 7 years back when I visited Taj Mahal with my family. I have moved to Agra on 20th August. Till then I have visited no where, just college and back to home. Perhaps I will go out with our small bunch of 6-7 friends on some holidays in October. In September there is no holidays except Sundays, the day on which we take a lot of rest. :)

Honestly speaking, last time I visited those monuments I found Akbar Fort much more better and interesting place than Taj Mahal in Agra.

Do you have women/girls in your curriculum/classes, or is it men only?

Sorry for the late reply!

"Do you have women/girls in your curriculum/classes, or is it men only?"

Our batch is of 150 students out of which 83 are boys and 67 are girls. Interestingly, I am the youngest one in my batch.

Most of our faculty (about 70 %) are females while just a few male! Whether the male teachers teach better, I feel, in our college.

After dissecting pectoral region, where we came across muscles pectoralis major, pectoralis minor and deltoid and the cephalic vein we are now dissecting axilla of our cadaver, where we have came across all the nerves of brachial plexus and axillary artery and vein.

I just see the structures and don't disssect because I am a bit allergic to formalin. I just hate the smell of formalin!

Few days back, the junior doctor who demonstrate bones to us and help us in dissection asked me a question, I was unable to answer and she gave me punishment to do dissection for 10 continuous days. I had to act sick and anyhow pass 10 days without dissecting! ;) All because I don't like the smell of formalin.
