Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information

    Betty Boop

What was the name of the first film Betty made an appearance in?Betty Boop

Dizzy Dishes. It was released in 1930 and Mae Questel was the first person to do the voice of Betty, (although others such as Annabel Little, Margie Heinz, Kate Wright and Bonnie Poe have done the voice as well, Mae was her signature voice). Mae was also the voice of Popeye's girl, Olive Oyl!

Who was the actual creator of Betty?Betty Boop

Grim Natwick . Myron Natwick was born on August 16, 1890 and died at the age of 100. He is best known as the creator of the animated character "Betty Boop" which often in the past was credited to Max Fleisher as she debuted in his "Out of the Inkwell" series.

Betty Boop was first drawn as a dog?Betty Boop

      t. Yes, Betty Boop did begin her life as a dog. Designed by Fleischer Studio and animator Grim Natwick, her first appearance was on August 8, 1930, in "Dizzy Dishes". She appeared in this cartoon as a dog character with long floppy ears and a very voluptuous human body. Soon her long ears became earrings and she was transformed into human form. She was first drawn as a person in "Kitty from Kansas City" in 1931.

What date is known as "Betty Boop Day"?Betty Boop

      April 3.

What is the name of Betty's one and only colored cartoon?Betty Boop

Poor Cinderella. Betty Boop plays Cinderella in this retelling of the classic tale. It was Fleischer Studios first color cartoon and Betty's only classic appearance in color. In this cartoon, Betty has reddish-orange hair, not the usual jet-black!

Who was known as the "Boop-Oop-a-Doop" girl?Betty Boop

Helen Kane. Helen Kane was born on August 4, 1903. In April 1934, Helen Kane, whose popularity had waned since her debut in 1929, filed suit against Max Fleischer, Fleischer Studios and Paramount Pictures for $250,000. She claimed that Betty Boop had stolen her fans. Max Fleischer gave testimony that Betty Boop was not based on Helen Kane (which was untrue since she was one of the main inspirations for Betty). Five of the women who had been the voice for Betty appeared in court to deny that they had attempted to imitate Helen Kane's voice. The judge watched and compared several of my cartoons with some of Helen Kane's films. There was testimony that the "Boop Oop a Doop" phrase came long before Helen Kane's popularity, as one witness claimed to have heard the phrase uttered in an Edith Griffith song. And on May 2nd, Paramount Pictures was able to locate a film clip of another singer, Baby Esther, who used the same phrase in a song in 1928, hence Helen Kane losing her lawsuit.

A carnation is named after Betty Boop?Betty Boop

      F. A rose by any other name...is well still a rose! Still, perfectly named, the Floribunda, which is a yellow ivory edged red rose with a moderate fruity fragrance was named in honor of Betty Boop.

When did AMC (American Movie Classics) air a tribute to the cartoon queen titled "AMC's 65th Anniversary Salute to Boop"?Betty Boop

August 8, 1996. It included a marathon presentation of original 1930's cartoons hosted by noted Hollywood director, Richard Fleischer, son of Max Fleischer. The cable channel A & E also aired a "Biography" of Betty Boop in 1996, marking the first time a cartoon star had been profiled on the cable network's acclaimed series.

On which leg did Betty wear her garter, left or right?Betty Boop

left. You can see this in almost any picture that shows her legs.

I'll end this quiz with a question about Betty's final film, "Yip, Yip, Yippy!". Does she appear in it?Betty Boop

No. "Yip, Yip, Yippy!" was released on August 11, 1939 and although released as a Betty Boop cartoon, she is not in this short.

    When was Betty Boop born?Betty Boop-Ology 101

1930. Miss Boop's first starring role was in "Dizzy Dishes", August 8, 1930, for Max Fleischer. She looks the same now as she did then.

Betty Boop's first starring role was in what film?Betty Boop-Ology 101

Dizzy Dishes. She was an immediate hit with Depression-era audiences eager for escapism, and reigned supreme at the box-office (among "cartoon" characters -- a term she privately resented) -- until 1939, when she stopped being drawn.

    What was Betty Boop's loveable pet dog's name?Betty Boop-Ology 101

Pudgy. Miss Boop originally got her break in films portraying a dog, but soon morphed into the fetching temptress we know and love today -- her earrings the only evidence of her former status as a canine character actress. That original character became "Pudgy", her dog.

Pet-loving Betty Boop also had an ambiguous-looking cat (some fans think it resembles a dog). What was its name?Betty Boop-Ology 101

Bimbo. Miss Boop's cat, Bimbo, first appears in "Barnacle Bill", her second starring role (not counting her previous bit parts as a dog). The cat speaks English and sings, "Says Barnacle Bill the Sailor."

Betty Boop had two baby brothers. What were their names?Betty Boop-Ology 101

Billy and Bubby. Miss Boop had two brothers (though, befitting a star in the Golden Age, this information was kept from the public). The first was named "Billy" and appeared only once or twice in the comics. Then Miss Boop had a brother named "Bubby" who started appearing and seemed to be the same age. Even Marlene Dietrich took a page from La Boop, claiming to be an only child despite irrefutable evidence to the contrary. Here again, La Boop set publicity standards for decades to come.

    Who syndicates "Betty Boop"?Betty Boop-Ology 101

King Features. King Features reaps millions annually from licensing and syndicating Miss Boop's image.

Natural brunette Betty Boop went redhead for this starring role. What was it?Betty Boop-Ology 101

Cinderella. One of Miss Boop's rare excursions into Technicolor.

Betty Boop needed a voice for talkies. She finally found her fame via what actress?Betty Boop-Ology 101

Mae Questal. Though not quite the first to dub Miss Boop (that honor belongs to Annabel Little), Mae Questel was in her teens when she won a Helen Kane look-alike contest and was hired by Paramount, who had Kane's contract, to appear in the RKO chain of theaters for publicity. Miss Boop demanded Questal's vocals, and the two are inextricably linked.

Versatile actress Betty Boop (at least her voice) provided the voice for what other hugely popular cartoon star?Betty Boop-Ology 101

Olive Oyl. Mae Questal, again, sublimated her own actor's ego for the betterment of her art in agreeing to supply vocals for these two legendary ladies of the silver screen, Miss Boop and Miss Oyl.

Betty Boop was shy, soft-spoken, and needed an actress to supply her voice. Who voiced her originally?Betty Boop-Ology 101

Annibel Little. Among others who provided Betty Boop's voice were Margie Hines, Kate Wright, Bonnie Poe, Mae Questel. Annabel Little was first to be chosen, and made a few cartoons before taking Betty Boop on the road in a vaudeville act. Mae Questel was in her teens when she was hired by Paramount. To this day, Miss Boop is deeply indebted.

Much to Miss Boop's chagrin, she later learned she was a Max Fleischer take-off on which famous vaudeville star? Betty Boop-Ology 101

Helen Kane. According to, "Mae Questel: A Reminiscence, History and Perspective" by Andrew J. Lederer. Mae was chosen by cartoon producer Max Fleischer to be the voice of his animated Helen Kane look/sound-alike, "Betty Boop".

Betty Boop has an unequaled record of starring films in Hollywood. In one decade, she starred in how many films?Betty Boop-Ology 101

      111. 111 Betty Boop cartoons were produced between 1930 and 1939!

Miss Boop joined the signatory stars and fabled directors -- like Gloria Swanson and Cecil B. DeMille -- of what major Hollywood studio?Betty Boop-Ology 101

Paramount. Gloria Swanson and Cecil B. DeMille worked together in silents, and appear together in Paramount's "Sunset Boulevard." La Boop does not, though she would have made a memorable Norma Desmond.

Miss Boop's most recent cinematic appearance, or at least that of her voice-double, was in a Woody Allen film of the late 1980s. What was it called?Betty Boop-Ology 101

New York Stories. Miss Boop, characteristically silent and preferring to speak through representatives, as always, nonetheless pronounced Mae Questal's performance in "New York Stories", "Oomp-pooh-pa-doo". Miss Questal, sadly, died at 90 in 1998. La Boop, happily, lives on.
