Bringing Up Father
Jiggs. "Bringing Up Father" was created by George McManus and first appeared in 1913.
Irish. He and his wife were poor immigrants who became rich.
Maggie. Maggie was a social climber, while Jiggs wanted to hang out with his old friends. He was uncomfortable with his new prestige.
Mason. Yes, Jiggs was a builder.
Washlady. She was an ordinary washlady, working for others.
They won the Irish sweepstakes. Once they had hit the jackpot, Maggie started up with her snooty attitude.
A cigar. Jiggs liked his cigars. Remember this strip started long before political correctness came about.
Threw a rolling pin at his head. He learned to dodge very quickly. For those who might not know what a rolling pin is, it's what is used to roll out bread dough and such.
Dinty Moore. Dinty was one of the people that Maggie was trying to keep Jiggs away from.
He ran a tavern. When I was researching this comic strip to give proper credit to the creator, I ran into an interesting bit of knowledge. George McManus favored a restuarant owned by a Mr. James Moore. Mr. Moore got the idea to change his restaurant's name to "Dinty Moore's" and made a fortune off of the "Bringing Up Father" character's name. Later the name was applied ot a line of canned food. Any of you ever hear of "Dinty Moore's Beef Stew", I sure have eaten a lot of it.
