Wilder, Laura Ingalls
Three. They are Eliza Jane, Alice, and Royal. Royal is the oldest at thirteen years old, Eliza Jane is twelve, Alice is ten, and Almanzo, the youngest, is eight going on nine.
Mr. Corse. At Almanzo's school in his first year, the teacher, Mr. Corse, is skinny and pale. Almanzo is afraid the school bullies will beat the teacher up.
Star and Bright. When Almanzo turns nine, his father says he can now help break the calves.
pumpkin. The pumpkin grows and grows until it's huge. Almanzo enters it into a contest at the country fair and wins.
Malone. The family goes into town for the Independence Day celebration.
a red whistle. The tin-peddler gave the kids each a gift: Eliza Jane got six diamond-shaped patty-pans to bake cakes in, Alice got heart-shaped ones, and Almanzo got a red whistle.
the parlor. The parlor was strictly off-limits to the kids. Almanzo was aiming at Eliza Jane because he got frustrated at her for criticizing him while polishing the stove.
Eliza Jane. She didn't want Almanzo to get in trouble and used scraps of wallpaper from the attic to cover up the stain. Their mother never found out.
Mr. Thompson. Mr. Paddock offers to Almanzo an apprenticeship but he refuses because he did not want to grow up to have to listen to mean people like Mr. Thompson.
Mr. Paddock. Almanzo finds Mr. Thompson's pocketbook on a bridge over Trout River and when he returned it, Mr. Thompson grabs it because he thinks Almanzo stole some of it. Mr. Paddock roughly tells Mr. Thompson to give Almanzo a reward for honestly returning the pocketbook. Mr. Thompson gives Almanzo two hundred dollars which he deposits in the bank.
Alice. Almanzo noted that Alice was 'working so fast that she was turning back to the bin while her hoopskirt was still turning the other way'.
Broken glass. They did this on his birthday when he got the yoke for his calves.
He was making shoes for a wedding. He was making shoes for a wedding, and it took three weeks.
Heater . The brush hit the parlor wall and Eliza Jane put wallpaper back over it.
'I just kept hoeing'. Almanzo was scared to tell Mr. Paddock that he milk fed it because he wasn't sure if milkfed pumpkins were allowed.
$200. Mr. Wilder knew that the horse buyer was buying horses for {$200} elsewhere and so knew he did not want them to sell for {$175} which is what the horse buyer offered.
Frank. When Almanzo asked his father for a nickel, his father gave him a half dollar instead.
$200. Mr. Thompson thought that Almanzo was a thief and wasn't going to give him anything except a nickel, but Mr. Paddock made Mr. Thompson pay $200 to Almanzo!
Bess and Beauty. Almanzo was only allowed to drive the 10 year old team, because they could plow and furrow without making a mistake. Prince and Lady, and Skip and Barnum were horses he had when he was older.
Laura Elizabeth Ingalls. Laura's full name is on the name card she gives to Almanzo.
Jack. Jack appeared in the first, second, and fourth and fifth books but, sadly, died before the family left Plum Creek.
scarlet fever. Mary becomes blind while the family is living "On the Banks of Plum Creek". Pa tells Laura she must be Mary's eyes.
Delaine. In "Little House in the Big Woods" Laura and Mary are very excited when they hear Ma is going to wear her Delaine dress.
hay. Laura and Pa twisted hay into logs to keep the fire burning since they ran out of coal and wood.
Lena and Jean. Lena and Laura go to pick up the laundry, but Ma tells Laura she is "wild." Lena and Jean are Docia and Hi's children from "Little House in the Big Woods".

Mr. Edwards. Mr. Edwards "met Santa" in Independence and crossed a swollen creek to bring Laura and Mary a tin cup, a stick of candy, a sugared cake, and a penny each.
Nellie Oleson. Nellie called Laura "country girl" in "On the Banks of Plum Creek". Laura returned the insult many years later in "Little Town on the Prairie".
Mary, Laura, Carrie, and Grace. Mary, Laura, and Carrie appear in each book except "Farmer Boy". Grace is born later.
