World History Trivia Questions

1. When did England's royal Tudor dynasty end?

From Quiz
When Did it End?

Answer: 1603

The storied reign of the Tudors began in 1487 with Henry Tudor's (subsequently crowned Henry VII) victory over Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. His son, Henry VIII, ascended to the throne upon the elder Henry's death in 1509. Henry VIII is perhaps the most infamous of the Tudors, noted for his many marriages as well as his breaking from the Church of Rome to establish the Church of England with himself as the head. Following Henry's death in 1547, the crown fell to his only legitimate son, Edward VI, who was only 10 years old at the time. Edward died without issue in 1552, shortly before which he'd named his cousin Lady Jane Grey his successor. Supporters of Edward's elder sister, Mary, quickly rose up in rebellion and unseated Jane, who was executed for treason in 1554, having never been officially crowned. Mary Tudor subsequently claimed the throne as Mary I, and despite her best efforts to produce an heir, she died childless in 1558. The crown then passed to Mary's younger sister Elizabeth I, who, having witnessed several women before her (namely her mother, Anne Boleyn) who were treated as pawns of their husbands, staunchly refused to marry and subsequently died without issue (and, it is widely believed, a virgin) in 1603 after a long and fruitful reign. Upon Elizabeth's death, her nearest relative, James VI, King of Scotland, was deemed the heir with the strongest claim. James belonged to the House of Stuart, and upon his crowning as James I of England, the Tudor reign came to an end.

2. One of the more iconic images of raising a flag was the American flag raising on Mount Suribachi in Iwo Jima. Immortalized in pictures as well as a statue, during which conflict was Iwo Jima 'flagged up' by the Americans?

From Quiz Flagging It Up

Answer: World War II

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941, the United States formally entered World War II on the side of the Allies and against the Japanese-German-Italian Axis. The war in the Pacific theatre did not go well for the Americans in the beginning and the Japanese made significant headway, hopping from island to island. However, in the latter stages of the war, the Americans were able to turn things around and began reconquering the lost territory. The battle for Iwo Jima started on February 19, 1945. It was considered an important island to take in the Pacific and the United States placed a lot of emphasis on retaking it. Nevertheless, the island had very little strategic importance to the war. After a long and bloody battle, Mount Suribachi was taken and an American flag was raised on February 23, 1945. The battle for the island would actually continue until March 26. The photograph of the second flag-raising would go on to win a Pulitzer Prize that very same year and became one of the best-known photographs of the war.

3. The Battle of Red Cliffs was a massive battle involving hundreds of thousands of soldiers fighting on land and countless ships fighting for control of the nearby river. What is the name of the river that this battle took place nearby?

From Quiz Countdown to the Millennium: III

Answer: Yangtze

The Battle of the Red Cliffs was a massive battle between the warlord, Cao Cao, who was also the Chancellor of the Han dynasty, and the warlords, Sun Quan and Liu Bei. Cao Cao's goal at the time was uniting China after the chaos of the past few decades; he had already retaken control over the north and was now focusing on the south. Cao Cao attempted to take control over the Yangtze River, but was ultimately repelled after suffering a major defeat on land and in the river itself. The use of fire ships, ships whose sole purpose was to smash into the enemy fleet and set it ablaze, devastated Cao Cao's fleet, including the countless numbers of soldiers and cavalry on board many of his ships. The aftermath of this battle would have massive implications on the future of China as Cao Cao was unable to unite the country while Sun Quan and Liu Bei would both end up becoming major power players in the lead-up to the Three Kingdoms period.

4. In international politics population transfers used to be considered a suitable way of resolving what particular issue?

From Quiz Beds are Burning

Answer: Ethnic conflict

Surprisingly perhaps, international treaties were being signed during the 20th century to sanction population transfers. Ethnic and religious conflicts were the main reasons for such transfers. An example was the expulsion of Germans from Eastern Europe and from Germany east of Oder-Neisse Line following the Second World War, which was sanctioned by the Allies in the Potsdam Agreement of 1945. Some 12 million ethnic Germans and citizens were involved and upwards of 500,000 died as a result, with some estimates putting this figure as high as 2 million. It is now considered to be in breach of International Law although this does not prevent it from happening. Such population movements differ from individually-motivated migrations although in times of war or famine, the lines are frequently blurred.

5. James Garfield, the 20th U.S. President, was assassinated while in office. Who was the assassin?

From Quiz Do You Know Your History?

Answer: Charles Guiteau

Although Guiteau did shoot the President, Garfield didn't die right away. He lived for weeks while doctors probed around inside the wound with unsterilized fingers while trying to retrieve the bullet. All that probing enlarged the wound significantly. Garfield eventually died of a heart attack. Who actually killed President Garfield? Was it Guiteau, who admittedly fired the shot, or the doctors who made things worse by introducing bacteria into the enlarged wound? The legal system answered that question by finding Guiteau guilty of murder and later hanging him.

7. Henry III became King of England shortly after his ninth birthday and Richard II was 10 when he gained the throne. Some people have to wait much longer. In British history, which aspiring monarch has spent the longest period as "heir apparent"?

From Quiz If I'm Not Back In 5 Minutes...Wait Longer

Answer: Charles, Duke of Rothesay and Cornwall

Queen Victoria, still the longest-reigning monarch in British history at the end of the 20th century, gave birth to her first son, Albert Edward, a little over four years after she became queen. He was the "heir apparent", first as the Earl of Dublin then later as the Prince of Wales, from November 1841 until January 1901 before taking the throne as King Edward VII. (He died less than 10 years after becoming king.) That was the longest anyone had waited as first in line to the throne until the current Prince Charles, Duke or Rothesay, Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Wales. He became heir apparent when his mother Queen Elizabeth II became Queen in February 1952, when he was just over three years old. In the summer of 2012, Prince Charles surpassed the former King Edward VII as the longest-serving heir apparent in British history. George, Crown Prince of Hanover, was born as heir apparent to George III in 1762 and did not become King George IV until 1820 -- more than 57 years in waiting. Prince Edward's father, Henry III, has already been on the throne for 23 years when he was born in 1239. Even so, he had to wait more than 33 years, until 1272, before he became King Edward I.

16. In which granary of the Roman Empire was a cat considered holy?

From Quiz Cats in History

Answer: Egypt

New Zealand and Peru were not known to the Romans. The Ukraine was and still is an important grain producer, but was never part of the Roman Empire. Besides, I haven't found any corroboration for the assumption that Ukrainians did ever consider the cat as holy. The veneration of the cat by the Egyptians is well documented. Thousands of mummified cats have been found, as well as temple inscriptions referring to the cat goddess Bastet. Cats did chase mice and rats from the grain storehouses and had thus a very useful function. Bastet was associated with joy and music. (Hint for cat people: seek soft music, best light classical music, if you want to treat your cat to a little music. My cats do appreciate classic violin or piano concertos).
