St. Cloud's. Throughout the book the orphanage is referred to as St. Cloud's...which is the same name as the old lumber town is sits in.
Nurse Angela. Nurse Angela is the one who uses all the funny names like Fuzzy, Stoney, and Smokey...Nurse Edna is the one who is in love with Wilbur so she names them all Wilbur or John.
Good night you princes of Maine, you kings of New England. I love that line.
abortion. The entire book is based around abortion. Be it legal, illegal, safe, dangerous, wrong, right, good or evil...this book really makes it clear what it was like in the 30's and 40's for women to have abortions.
Sunshine. Melony says this in a contemptuous way....and she calls him this for the next 30 years or so.
for an abortion. Wally and Candy come to St. Cloud's so that Candy can have an abortion. They want to get married and have a family, but they want to finish college first.
Curley Day. It is Curley who is devistated that Candy and Wally won't adopt him. He doesn't realize they aren't there to adopt anyone and when Homer leaves with them he thinks they adopted Homer.
two days. Homer keeps saying he's only going to go for two days to get the apple trees and then come right back....little does he know...he'll end up being gone for years and years!
over Burma. Over Burma. These two words are repeated many times...mostly by Dr. Larch in his day dreams and ether dreams.
ether. Larch is an ether addict
on the cider house roof. They like to sit on the cider house roof and look for the lights on the coast.
they have a son together. Candy and Homer fall in love and Candy accidentally becomes pregnant. They don't tell anyone. They go to St. Cloud's to have the baby, then they lie and say Homer adopted an orphan.
the knife business. Mr. Rose is so fast and deadly with a knife everyone says he's in the knife business and you do not want to be in the knife business with him.
Mr. Rose. Mr. Rose is forcing his daughter Rose Rose to have sex with him and he is the father of the second baby. He cut up the father of the first baby. Mr. Rose is a sick and dangerous man.

Fuzzy Stone . Larch created a long and thorough history for a person that didn't exist anymore. Fuzzy was an orphan who had died when he was a child. Dr. Larch covered up that fact so that he could make Fuzzy a doctor and Homer could become Fuzzy. When Homer returns he is then on known as Dr. Fuzzy Stone so that he can replace Dr. Larch and continue his work.
A Prayer for Owen Meany. The film doesn't touch at all upon the war issues raised in the novel and is not as comic as the novel.
The family dog. The flatulent dog (who also happens to have been stuffed after his unfortunate demise) is lost in a plane crash over the Atlantic.
Walt. If only he'd been wearing a seat belt....Duncan, his brother, ends up losing an eye in the accident, which involved the car, driven by Garp, ramming into the other car in the dark.

A graduate student. The poor "gradual" student also lost an important part of himself...perhaps with some justice! "Gradual student" was what one of the boys once used to describe Helen's "graduate" students, but having been one on two occasions, I agree that gradual may be more accurate.

Melony. In his book about the film, "My Movie Business", Irving explained why he regretted the omission, but also why it was necessary...Melony would have dominated Homer's character, as she did in the book, and would have made for an entirely different (and longer) film.
Angel. They tell Wally, Candy's husband, that Angel was adopted...a lie Wally allows them to believe HE believes, essentially forgiving his wife's infidelity.
Owen . The scene is similar in both the book and the film, when Owen/Simon hits a baseball that strikes John's mother on the noggin, killing her.
Frank. John, through whose eyes the story is told, says Franny was "the loudest". John was the middle of the five children. (Lilly and Egg were the youngest.)
Rose Rose. Which leads to Homer's knowledge of the relationship between Rose Rose and her father.

Technical Sergeant. Garp's mother, Jenny, never knew the first name of Garp's father. She met him when he was on his death bed in the hospital where she worked.

Rev. Lewis Merrill. Rev. Lewis Merrill was the pastor at the congregational church.
The 1998 film "Simon Birch" was very loosely based on this book.
St Cloud's. This John Irving book was made into an Oscar winning film in 1999. Michael Caine won an Oscar for his supporting role as Dr Wilbur Larch, and John Irving won an Oscar for the screenplay. Tobey Maguire played orphan Homer Wells, and the film also starred Charlize Theron and Paul Rudd.
