How many monarchs (including Teppic) have there been in Djelybeybi?

From Quiz "'Pyramids' Random Questions"

Pyramids Trivia Questions

1. Dios was an important figure in Djelibeybi. What was his job?

From Quiz
#7 'Pyramids': Relics and Religion

Answer: High Priest

Dios was the high priest in Djelibeybi and had been for far beyond living memory. He loved tradition and ensured that nothing in the kingdom ever changed. Religion, politics, and culture remained as static as the dead heat of the desert. Whenever Pteppic tried to make a change, Dios would 'interpret' the king's wishes.

2. What does Mericet teach?

From Quiz Pyramids

Answer: Strategy and Poison Theory

Mericet is an old Assassin who has broken every record of his time. People say that he even killed one of the Patricians. They say that if you get him as your examiner, you should just cut your own throat before you begin. (Three guesses who Teppic's examiner is!)

3. What Guild in Ankh-Morpork was Teppic sent to?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Pyramids'

Answer: Assassin's Guild

The most important thing to remember here is, it's not how many people you inhume, but how many fail to inhume you.

4. Which house is Teppic placed into at the assassins' school?

From Quiz 'Pyramids' Random Questions

Answer: Viper House

If you picked Gryffindor or Slytherin, you're doing the wrong quiz. Those are school houses in the Harry Potter books.

5. What made Pteppic unique among rulers of Djelibeybi?

From Quiz #7 'Pyramids': Relics and Religion

Answer: He was raised outside the kingdom.

Pteppic broke traditions in a number of ways, and this was one of the first in "Pyramids". As a boy, he was sent to Ankh-Morpork to train in the Assassin's Guild. He was the first ruler of Djelibeybi to be educated elsewhere. His exposure to new ideas and different ways of life caused friction between him and Dios, who wanted to keep everything the same.

6. Who in Teppic's family is an Assassin? (Besides himself, that is.)

From Quiz Pyramids

Answer: Uncle Vyrt

Teppic's Uncle Vyrt is an Assassin as well. It is him, in fact, who gives the king the idea to send Teppic to the Assassin's Guild for education.

7. Who was the High Priest in Djelibeybi?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Pyramids'

Answer: Dios

Didactylos was an Ephebian philosopher, Dil was an embalmer of kings in Djelibeybi and Dryad is actually the name of a tree dwelling species on the Disc.

8. Who was Teppic's best friend at school?

From Quiz 'Pyramids' Random Questions

Answer: Chidder

His father is in commerce. Teppic, being royal, has no grasp of real life. "I've never been to Commerce, but I understand they're very fine people." He never goes into detail about what kind of commerce, but it has something to do with moving goods around and supplying needs. Exactly what goods and what needs is never explained.

9. Where did the people of Djelibeybi store their deceased ancestors?

From Quiz #7 'Pyramids': Relics and Religion

Answer: They placed their bodies in pyramids.

Djelibeybi had a similar geography and culture to Ancient Egypt. When people died, they were entombed in grand pyramids - if they were rich enough. The pyramids held on to time and every now and then they had to be flared off. Despite Pteppic's (and his father's) wishes, the deceased king was going to be buried in the biggest, most elaborate pyramid ever to be built, which caused all kinds of problems.

10. In what way is Ptraci connected to Teppic?

From Quiz Pyramids

Answer: She's his half-sister

Ptraci is a handmaiden who is going to be thrown to the sacred crocodiles for refusing to take poison so she can be buried with Teppic's father. Later on it is revealed that she is Teppic's sister. (Good thing Dios never found out or the choice "She's his wife" would have been applicable...)

11. In what timescale was Ptaclusp expected to build the dead king's pyramid?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Pyramids'

Answer: Three months

Even in his panic, Ptaclusp managed to grumble under his breath that Tsort wasn't built in a day...

12. Which teacher monitors Teppic's final exam?

From Quiz 'Pyramids' Random Questions

Answer: Mericet

All are teachers at the school. Lady T'malia teaches Political Expediency. Nivor teaches Traps and Deadfalls. The Kompt teaches Modern Languages and Music. Mericet teaches Strategy and Poison Therapy. "They said you had one chance in two unless you drew old Mericet as examiner, in which case you might as well cut your throat right at the start." Of course, (probably due to narrative causality) Teppic gets Mericet.

13. Pteppic's father had a life beyond death in two different forms. At one point, his mummified corpse was reanimated, but how did he exist before that?

From Quiz #7 'Pyramids': Relics and Religion

Answer: He was a ghost.

When Death appeared after the old king's demise, he didn't take the form that Teppicymon XXVII had expected. Death wasn't a three-headed scarab beetle, and he had a scythe instead of the Flail of Mercy. The king hung around as a ghost while his body was mummified. He soon began to worry that he would spend eternity as a ghost trapped inside a pyramid. He stopped worrying about that when he - and all of the other Djelibeybi mummies - became reanimated corpses.

14. Between which empires does Djelibeybi lie?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Pyramids'

Answer: Tsort and Ephebe

Djelibeybi is two miles wide and one hundred and fifty miles long, situated between the stronger empires of Tsort and Ephebe. Al Khali is the capital city of Klatch, a continent between the Circle Sea and the Rim Ocean, while Bhangbhangduc is a small island in the Agatean Sea.

15. Who is the Djelibeybian High Priest?

From Quiz 'Pyramids' Random Questions

Answer: Dios

It turns out that Dios is seven thousand years old. He uses his pyramid to turn back time in small bits so he never dies. Koomi is the high priest of Khefin, the Two-Faced God of Gateways. He is expected to succeed Dios as high priest; that is, if Dios ever dies. Ptaclusp is the pyramid builder. (His twin sons are Ptaclusp IIa and Ptaclusp IIb.) Didactylos is an Ephebian philosopher who doesn't even appear in this story. (See 'Small Gods'.)

16. What does "Nil mortifi, sine lucre" mean?

From Quiz Pyramids

Answer: No killing without payment

Nil mortifi, sine lucre means no killing without payment, and is the motto of the Assassins Guild. Because I knead the dough was from "Feet of Clay" (at least, I think so) and was the motto of a baker. I made up the other two.

17. For what reason was Ptraci brought before Teppic as he held supreme court?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Pyramids'

Answer: She refused to take the potion

Ptraci was reportedly the favourite handmaiden of Teppic's father, the late King Teppicymon XXVII. It is customary in Djelibeybi for a dead king to take servants into the netherworld with him but Ptraci was having none of it.

18. When the gods began to take physical form and walk among humans, which creature pushed the sun across the sky?

From Quiz #7 'Pyramids': Relics and Religion

Answer: A dung beetle

It was the pharoah's job to ensure that the sun rose and set every day, though it was never made clear to Pteppic how he was supposed to make it happen. According to one Djelibeybi myth, a dung beetle pushed the sun across the sky, so when the gods descended on the Discworld, a dung beetle appeared in the sky to do this daily duty.

19. Who does Dios suggest that Teppic marry?

From Quiz Pyramids

Answer: His aunt

Dios said that he should marry his aunt, as he has no sisters (Hah!) and the royal blood should not be watered down.

20. After rescuing Ptraci from her cell, where did Teppic tell her to hide?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Pyramids'

Answer: In a mummy case

Teppic led Ptraci to the embalmer's workshops, where he chose a mummy casket for her to hide in until he came back for her.

21. What is the book which captivated Teppic as a youth?

From Quiz 'Pyramids' Random Questions

Answer: The Shuttered Palace

"The Shuttered Palace (translated from the Klatchian by A Gentleman, with Hand-Coloured Plates for the Connoisseur in A Stricly Limited Edition)" was confusing, but instructive. Later he finds out that Ptraci's great-great-grandmother posed for most of the pictures. She herself has gotten as far as number 46, Congress of the Five Auspicious Ants. "The Joye of Snackes" is Nanny Ogg's cookbook which gets published in 'Masquerade' and prompts the trip to Ankh-Morpork. "De Chelonian Mobile" (The Turtle Moves) is the underground book contradicting Omnian teachings in 'Small Gods'. "130 Days of Psuedopolis" is similar to "The Shuttered Palace". Ptraci recognizes a picture from it on one of Alfonz's tattoos.

22. Which monument did Pteppic set out to destroy?

From Quiz #7 'Pyramids': Relics and Religion

Answer: The Great Pyramid

The Great Pyramid was so huge and magical that it was causing dimensional disturbances in Djelibeybi. The city-state had been rotated ninety degrees out of alignment with the rest of the Discworld, but Pteppic had managed to find a way back in. He started to scale the smooth, marble slope of the pyramid using his assassin skills, but eventually he lost his grip. He was rescued and supported by his reanimated ancestors, who had climbed on top of each other to make a kind of ladder to reach the tip of the pyramid.

23. Who is referred to as the First by the writing on the wall of Khuft's pyramid?

From Quiz Pyramids

Answer: Dios

Dios is over 7,000 years old, as we learn at the end of the book when he was sent back to Khuft's time. He was already over 7,000, but then he lived for 7,000 more years, and, of course, the cycle will never end for Dios.

24. What relation of Teppic did Ptraci turn out to be?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Pyramids'

Answer: His half sister

The late king wished he could have married her mother but couldn't, as she wasn't royal.

25. How far in "Little Pieces for Tiny Fingers" has Ptraci gotten?

From Quiz 'Pyramids' Random Questions

Answer: "The Goblin's Picnic"

It is a dulcimer instruction book. Ptraci has gotten all the way to page five. "Congress of the Fox and Persimmon" is from "The Shuttered Palace", a different kind of instruction book.

26. Which mythical creature posed a riddle to travellers, including Pteppic?

From Quiz #7 'Pyramids': Relics and Religion

Answer: A sphinx

Pteppic came across the sphinx on the edge of the kingdom as he re-entered Djelibeybi. It posed the following riddle: "Who goes on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?" When the sphinx revealed the answer (a man) Pteppic argued with the creature over the misleading timescale set in the puzzle. In the end, he managed to baffle the sphinx into letting him go free.

27. Who discovered Djelibeybi and founded its dynasty?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Pyramids'

Answer: Khuft

He discovered it quite by accident while fleeing into the desert to avoid upset purchasers of his rather sub-standard camels.

28. How many monarchs (including Teppic) have there been in Djelybeybi?

From Quiz 'Pyramids' Random Questions

Answer: 1,398

We learn this when Teppic and Dios are talking to Ptaclusp about the construction schedule for the new pyramid. Dios: "Completion in three months. In time for Inundation." Ptaclusp: "What?" Dios: "You are talking to the 1,398th monarch." Ptaclusp: "I'm sorry. I mean, what?, O great king."

29. When the gods took physical form in Djelibeybi, what did they spend most of their time doing?

From Quiz #7 'Pyramids': Relics and Religion

Answer: Fighting each other

Weird things were happening in Djelibeybi. The appearance of the gods was just one of many. A seventy-foot apparition of Vut the Dog-Headed God of the Evening was just one of a number of gods that were causing problems for the public and making the priests panic. The gods and goddesses were fighting each other and destroying the city in the process.

30. Where does the camel named Bloody Stupid live?

From Quiz Pyramids

Answer: Tsort

Here's the relevant passage from "Pyramids": "Bloody stupid animal," muttered Ptraci, as they jolted away from the palace, "but it looks like it finally got the idea." ...Gauge-invariant repetition rate of 3.5/z. What's she talking about, Bloody Stupid lives over in Tsort... That this passage begins with a mathematical-type equation is not surprising, as camels are the smartest animals on the Disc.
