He was drunk.. Iris's brother Graham didn't realize Iris was in L.A. and he came over because he was extremely drunk. Whenever he got this drunk, Iris let him sleep on her couch.
What was the old man's name, who Iris helped to walk better, so that he could go onstage in front of his fans? | The Holiday

Arthur. Arthur had been alive for a long time, and he had met and worked with many famous movie stars. He kept receiving letters about a benefit in his honor, where he would get to go out on stage in front of his fans and talk about who he'd met over the years. Iris found him lost on the street, and after befriending him she helped him to walk on stage.
Surrey. When Amanda was searching the web for a place to go on vacation, she clicked on "Surrey, England" and found Iris's cottage.
What surprised Amanda when she showed up at Graham's house unexpectedly? | The Holiday

He had kids.. Amanda didn't know that Graham was a widower, living alone with his two children.
Cry. When Amanda was little, her father and mother broke up. She cried and cried for the longest time and after that she told herself to suck it up, and she never cried again. She didn't cry until the end of the movie when she realized that she loved Graham.
His secretary. Amanda kicked Ethan out of her house because she suspected he cheated on her with his secretary. He denied it at first, but eventually he fessed up.

There were zero.. Amanda was traveling to England to get away from Ethan and all men, so when Iris told her there were "zero" men where she was, Amanda agreed to come right away.
She was escaping from a lost love.. Iris was in love with Jasper Bloom for three years, and he had failed to acknowledge her. Finally when he did and got her hopes up, she found out he was getting married.

Crying. Graham was sad because he loved Amanda and didn't want her to leave.
What was Graham's character, that he always performed at his house? | The Holiday
|
Mr. Napkin Head. To entertain his daughters, Graham put a napkin over his face and put his glasses on top, transforming himself into Mr. Napkin Head.
Iris and Amanda. Kate Winslet plays Iris Simpkins, a young single woman from England who has just had devastating news about her boyfriend. Cameron Diaz is Amanda Woods, a California blond whose boyfriend has just admitted to cheating on her. Neither can bear the thought of being at home for the holidays, so they decide to go somewhere completely foreign to them.
They meet online.. Iris and Amanda meet online. Amanda does a Google search for vacations and a home exchange site comes up. Iris has her quaint English cottage listed on this site. When Amanda inquires about the cottage, Iris answers at once, and the two begin the conversation that will change their lives.
Arthur and Miles. Miles is a friend and business associate of Amanda's ex-boyfriend, Ethan. He meets Iris when he comes to the house to pick up Ethan's laptop. Arthur is Amanda's elderly neighbor. I rather doubt that Amanda has ever met him, but Iris befriends almost everyone she meets. She meets Arthur when she finds him looking lost and confused a short distance from his house and offers him a lift.
Raises and lowers the black-out shades. Iris discovers, to her complete amazement and utter joy, that Amanda has the best of everything in her house. The blinds shut out all the daylight, allowing Iris to sleep during her first day there.
Because they speak English there.. "Where do they speak English? England!" Amanda says to herself, in the scene where she goes online to search for vacation rentals. Iris' house is the second one she sees on the website, and she loves it!
"Are there any men in your town?". Amanda is just getting over her ex-boyfriend and does not want any romantic complications. "Zero," Iris answers. "When can I come?" Amanda replies.
He doesn't want to be embarrassed with his walker in a room of eleven schnooks.. The letters have been coming for some time, informing him of an impending tribute to his life, at which the organization would like him to be the guest of honor. In the scene where Iris comes to Arthur's house and brings in the mail, she opens (with his reluctant permission) the latest such letter, and begins questioning him on why he doesn't want to be a part of the tribute. He simply does not believe there will be more than eleven people who care enough to attend, and he will not be embarrassed in front of those few.
What does Arthur give Iris in the scene where she comes to pick him up for the tribute evening? | "The Holiday", Part I
|
A corsage. As Iris starts to put the corsage on her wrist, Arthur tells her that she doesn't have to wear it if it won't match her outfit, or if it's corny. She tells him that she likes corny. She's looking for corny in her life. He compliments her on the nice line.
He had to meet his girlfriend.. Miles comes in at the last minute, just as Arthur is ascending the stage. Iris has been sure he wasn't going to be there and is overjoyed when, not only does he make it, but he lets her know things are over between himself and Maggie.
Film writer. Arthur is a retired film writer. He recommends quite a few old movies, with what he considers great lines, to Iris. He is a fascinating conversationalist and he and Amanda become close friends.
film composer. Miles, marvelously portrayed by Jack Black, is a film composer and works with Ethan, Amanda's ex-live-in boyfriend. He meets Iris when he comes to the house to pick up Ethan's laptop.
Iris' dog. Charlie is Iris' small house dog, left behind in England. It is assumed that Amanda has had advance notice that she will be taking care of the dog, because she doesn't seem at all surprised or irritated by him. The only time we hear his name mentioned is in the scene where Amanda calls Iris in L.A. She tells Iris she is out walking Charlie.
Hanukkah party. Iris doesn't allow Miles in the first time he comes, since she doesn't know him. After she clears it with Amanda's assistant, he comes back, only to find Iris entertaining Arthur (Eli Wallach) and three of his friends in the kitchen. She says that somehow it turned into a Hanukkah party! Miles joins the party and fits in beautifully.
Video store. Yes, they spend Christmas Eve in a video store! Not my idea of the ideal place to be on the most magical night of the year, but it worked for them! Actually, Miles, being in the movie industry, has taken a great interest in the old movies that Arthur has recommended to Iris. Even though we don't see them renting any videos, they were probably there for that purpose. (Dustin Hoffman is also in the video store!)
Lindsay Lohan and James Franco. Amanda's company has just finished a trailer for a movie called "Deception", due to open on Christmas Day. Lohan and Franco actually appear in the trailer.
She says she's on location.. Maggie says she's on location, but Miles sees her with another man on Christmas Eve night. Seems she has lied to him and has been back for several days...with the other man.
a theme song. Miles writes a theme for Arthur that will play as he is walking up the stage at his tribute. He also writes a theme for Iris, telling her that he "used only the good notes."
Her Barbie. Graham's daughters, Sophie and Olivia are absolutely delighted to have an adult female visitor in the house, and instruct their father to do first one thing, then another for Amanda. Sophie tells Graham to take Amanda's coat, and when he does, the girls see that Amanda is beautifully dressed. Olivia is so awed, she makes the comment that Amanda looks just like her Barbie. It is, of course, intended to be the supreme compliment.
a cow. In the scene at Graham's house, after the girls have gone to bed, Graham is trying to explain why he hasn't mentioned his family to Amanda. He tells her they are so very different, that he is "Daddy" and, as much as he loves his girls, he simply has to get away from it all sometimes. He asks her if she can relate to someone who has a cow in the backyard. "I sew and I have a cow," he says.
Rosehill Cottage. Iris' quaint picture-postcard perfect English cottage is named Rosehill Cottage. The name is on the front gate and completely covered with snow the first time Amanda sees it.
Surrey. The little cottage is on the outskirts of Surrey. Iris describes it in her online ad as only ninety minutes from exciting London.
