Ratatouille
Gusteau. Remy is a young mouse with a nose for high quality food. This gets him into trouble with his father, who is the head of the rat clan. According to Remy, rats are thieves who steal food. Remy, on the other hand, wants to make something instead of following in his father’s and brother’s footsteps. Because of his dream, Remy sneaks into the kitchen of the house his clan inhabits and watches Gusteau’s cooking show. Before long, he knows how to read, understand humans, and – most importantly – cook.
Remy is discovered by the homeowner and she starts shooting at the rats.. One day, Remy stumbles across a mushroom while his brother Emile finds a piece of cheese. Remy cannot resist trying his hand at a little cooking, so he puts these two ingredients together, along with other things he can scavenge. Remy and Emile climb up to the chimney in order to roast the mushroom, and are struck by lightning. Unhurt, Remy tastes his well-done mushroom and decides it needs saffron. The saffron is located in the kitchen. Unfortunately, the lady who lives in the house sees the two rats, and begins to shoot at them. She misses so many times that the entire roof of the living room falls down, and the rat clan no longer has a place to live. The clan runs down to boats they have hidden for emergencies. Remy is separated from his family when the boats take off without him.
By pulling Linguini’s hair in the right direction. Remy winds up in a Paris sewer underneath Gusteau’s restaurant. As he watches the chefs, he notices that the young garbage boy, Linguini, has bumped into a pot of soup. Scared that he will lose his job if anyone notices, Linguini tries to fix the soup but does not know how. Remy sees that the soup will be ruined, and corrects the mistakes Linguini made. Remy does such a good job, in fact, that the soup is much better than normal, and a food critic writes a good review about it. Linguini asks Remy to help him cook; this way Linguini can keep his job and Remy can cook like he wants. After a little trial and error, they determine that the best way to cook good food is if Remy pulls Linguini’s hair to make him move. (Remy can only understand Linguini; he is not able to talk to him.)
Gusteau. Linguini comes to work for Chef Skinner at Gusteau’s restaurant shortly after his mother dies. He gives a letter to Chef Skinner from his mother, who tells Skinner that Gusteau is Linguini’s father. Neither Gusteau (before he died) nor Linguini knew that they were father and son before Linguini came to work at the restaurant.
All of the other statements are correct. (Linguini never learned how to cook, but he is making gourmet dishes., Skinner keeps seeing Linguini talking to a rat., Skinner is afraid that Linguini has come to take control of the restaurant.). Chef Skinner does not trust Linguini for all of these reasons. He gives Linguini a lot of wine in order to get him to admit that he has a pet rat, and insists that Linguini recreate his now-famous soup in front of him. Most importantly of all, though, Chef Skinner is worried that Linguini will reveal that he is Gusteau’s heir and become the owner of the restaurant. Gusteau’s will stated that Skinner (because he worked for Gusteau before his death) would get the restaurant if no heir of Gusteau showed up within two years. Linguini starts working at the restaurant one month before that two-year period is up. Fortunately, Remy finds out and tells Linguini the truth about his father. Linguini becomes the owner of the restaurant, and Chef Skinner is fired.
Linguini takes credit for Remy’s cooking genius; Remy steals food from the restaurant.. Since Gusteau’s restaurant becomes popular after Remy takes over the kitchen, it attracts quite a bit of press coverage. A press conference is called, and Linguini is in the limelight. Linguini is at first rather shy in front of the cameras, but soon warms to the crowd. Remy, who is hiding in his customary spot under Linguini’s hat, begins to get annoyed with his cockiness. However, Linguini then proclaims that Colette is the source of his kitchen inspiration. Remy is angry, and the two have a row. In an act of revenge, Remy tells his clan to raid the restaurant’s food supply. Linguini comes to apologize to Remy, but catches him in the middle of the theft. Angry again, he tells Remy to never return to the restaurant.
Anton Ego. Before Anton Ego reviews Gusteau’s restaurant, the bistro has a five-star rating – the highest a restaurant can achieve. However, Anton’s review causes it to lose a star. This depresses Gusteau so much that he dies not long after that. After Gusteau’s death, the restaurant loses yet another star, giving it a total of only three stars.
Remy, Colette, and the rat clan. As everyone who works in the restaurant gets ready to serve dinner, Linguini is upset because he does not know how to cook at all. Remy is not present because of the argument they had. Anton Ego is waiting for his dinner, and there is no way that Linguini will be able to serve him anything that will get a good review for the restaurant. After being questioned by his restaurant staff, he confesses that he does not cook. At this point, Remy walks in and the two make up. Linguini then informs the staff that a rat has been the genius cook for the restaurant, and all the employees quit immediately. Colette reconsiders, however, and returns to the restaurant in time to help Remy prepare the ratatouille for Anton Ego. To make up for the lack of other staff, Remy’s rat clan aids in the food preparation, and Linguini takes over the job of server since he is not qualified to be a chef. Dinner goes smoothly, and Anton is pleased with the dish he is served.
It is closed down because of numerous health violations, and Linguini opens a new bistro.. Unfortunately, Chef Skinner calls the health inspector, and he arrives while the rat clan is cooking dinner. The rats overpower him, and lock both him and Chef Skinner in the pantry for the remainder of dinner. Afterwards, both are released, and the health inspector shuts the restaurant down. Anton Ego is fired because he so readily endorsed a place that had a 'rat problem,' but he bounces back to invest in the next restaurant that Linguini opens. Remy remains in charge of the kitchen, and the bistro is popular not only among Parisians but among rats as well. (The rat area of the bistro is kept well out of sight of the human patrons, of course.) All in all, it’s a very happy ending!
Little Chef. Remy can understand Linguini when he talks to him, but he can't talk back. Linguini doesn't know Remy's real name and so he calls him 'Little Chef' since Remy is the one who can cook.
