Paranoid. Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler (from Guitar World magazine, March 2004): "A lot of the 'Paranoid' album was written around the time of our first album, 'Black Sabbath'. We recorded the whole thing in about two or three days, live in the studio. The song 'Paranoid' was written as an afterthought. The Immigrant Song. One of the lyrics is "Valhalla I am coming." It refers to Norse Mythology. Valhalla is a hall in Asgard where the souls of fallen warriors are taken by the "Valkyries," which are spirits of war who carry up heroes who have been slain. "The song is loosely based on the ancient Greek myth of Icarus who was imprisoned with his father Daedalus in the Labyrinth on Crete. So the pair fabricated wings for themselves from feathers and wax. Unfortunately Icarus, not heeding the advice of his father, flew too close to the sun, melting the wax that held the feathers together and thus fell to his death in the sea.
Vocalist Bruce Dickinson admits that he had modified the original tale to make it an allegory of teenage rebellion against adult authority (which caused the death of Icarus in this case)."
