Bible Families Trivia Questions

1. Who was the mother of Samuel?

From Quiz
Relatives in the Old Testament

Answer: Hannah

Hannah was one of Elkanah's two wives and had not been able to have a child. She went to the Tabernacle and cried as she prayed to God to have a son, saying she would dedicate him to God. The high priest Eli observed her and thought she was drunk until she explained and then he blessed her and she had a son, who she called Samuel. When Samuel was still a little boy she took him to the temple and gave him to Eli to raise and Eli blessed her again and she had other children. Hannah went to see Samuel every year and each time gave him a new priest's linen garment. Samuel grew up to become an important figure in Jewish history as he was a judge and a prophet as well as a priest.

2. When both their husbands died, Ruth decided to go with her mother in law Naomi back to Bethlehem. However, Naomi had another daughter in law, who decided to stay in Moab. What was her name?

From Quiz Relations in the Bible

Answer: Orpah

Naomi and her husband Elimelech lived in Bethlehem but sadly there was a terrible drought there, so the couple decided to take their two sons to the land of Moab to find food. Whilst they were there the sons both married local girls. Elimelech and his two sons died, and Naomi decided to return to her home. She told her daughters in law her plans and said that they should go home to their mothers. Orpah did so, but Ruth stayed with Naomi and went to Bethlehem with her. (Ruth 1:8-22).

3. Genesis 4 includes the Bible's first recorded stepparents, Lamech's wives. Lamech was apparently the first polygamist and each wife was the stepmother to the other's children. Who were Lamech's wives?

From Quiz Stepmothers and Stepfathers

Answer: Adah and Zillah

First of all, I think I should clarify something here. In modern Western culture, a stepmother is typically the wife of someone's biological father after the death or divorce of his other wife, the child's biological mother. In the Bible, certainly the Old Testament, polygamy--one father having multiple wives and children with those mothers--was usually the cause of stepmothers. The Cambridge Dictionary has a basic definition of "stepmother" that polygamy falls under: "the woman who is married to someone's father but who is not their real mother". Adah and Zillah were Lamech's wives. Eve was Adam's biblical wife, while Lilith is the non-Biblical "first wife (before Eve) of Adam" who appears in medieval Jewish literature. Bilhah and Zilpah were Jacob's concubines or wives. Bath-shua was Judah's wife and Bathsheba was one of David's wives.

4. According to Scripture, with how many different women did Abraham father children?

From Quiz Men in the Old Testament with Multiple Wives

Answer: 3

Abraham fathered children with three different women -- Sarah, Hagar and Keturah. Genesis 21:3 states that Sarah gave birth to Isaac. She had been barren for the longest time, and had previously given permission to Abraham to sleep with her handmaiden Hagar to produce children. Abraham's tryst with Hagar resulted in the birth of Ishmael, as per Genesis 16:15. Meanwhile, Genesis 25:1 tells of Abraham taking Keturah as his wife, presumably after the death of Sarah. Scripture states Keturah gave birth to six sons -- Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

5. According to Scripture, what king of Israel had three hundred concubines in addition to seven hundred wives/princesses? (1 Kings 11:1-8)

From Quiz Concubines: Casual Cuddles, Cheeky Consequences

Answer: Solomon

Solomon, according to Scripture, had three hundred concubines in addition to seven hundred wives/princesses. Scripture states Solomon's "many" foreign wives led him astray, with him worshiping other gods. 1 Kings 11:1-8 explains things this way in the NKJV: "But King Solomon loved many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh: women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites -- from the nations of whom the LORD had said to the children of Israel, 'You shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you. Surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods.' Solomon clung to these in love. And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the LORD his God, as was the heart of his father David. For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and did not fully follow the LORD, as did his father David. Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon. And he did likewise for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods."

6. According to Scripture, whose unnamed wife was turned into a pillar of salt? (Genesis 19:26)

From Quiz A Quiz Namely About Unnamed Wives in the Bible

Answer: Lot's wife

Lot's wife, of course, was turned into a pillar of salt when she defied divine instructions and looked back at the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. One of the best known stories in the Old Testament involves the LORD bringing down brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah because of its wickedness, with Lot and his family fleeing. However, Genesis 19:26 states Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt because she looked back. Genesis 19:15-17 tells of angels visiting Lot and advising him of the coming destruction and to flee with his wife and two daughters and not to look back. Genesis 19:17 quotes one of the angels as saying: "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed."

7. Leah and Rachel were sisters who were both married to Jacob. According to Scripture, which one was the elder sister - Leah or Rachel? (Genesis 29:16)

From Quiz A Quick Look at Sisters in the Bible

Answer: Leah

Leah, according to Scripture, was the older sister of Rachel. Genesis 29:16-17 states: "Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah's eyes were delicate, but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance." According to Scripture, Jacob agreed to work seven years for Laban to win Rachel's hand. However, at the end of seven years, Laban gave him Leah to be his wife, stating it was the custom for the oldest daughter to be married first. Scripture goes on to state Jacob worked an additional seven years to win the right to marry Rachel. Although Jacob was married to two sisters, he greatly preferred Rachel over Leah, as per Genesis 29:30. In fact, Verse 31 states, Leah was "unloved".

8. Esau was a twin who was born to Isaac and Rebekah. What was the name of Esau's slightly younger twin brother? (Genesis 25:25)

From Quiz A Quick Look at Brothers in the Bible

Answer: Jacob

Jacob was the slightly younger twin brother of Esau. Although the boys were twins, Scripture indicates they were vastly different in their appearance and in their likes. Genesis 25:24-28, in the NKJV, gives this account of the two brothers: "So when her [Rebekah] days were fulfilled for her to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb. And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau's heel; so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. So the boys grew. And Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a mild man, dwelling in tents. And Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob."

9. What widow posed as a prostitute and ended up bearing twins when she was impregnated by Judah, her father-in-law? (Genesis 38)

From Quiz A Quick Look at Widows in the Bible

Answer: Tamar

Tamar is the correct answer. After posing as a prostitute, Tamar became impregnated by her father-in-law Judah and gave birth to twin boys, Perez and Zerah. Tamar experienced many things in her lifetime, not the least of which were the deaths of her first two husbands, Er and Onan, who were struck down by the LORD, as per Genesis 38:6-10. The two men were sons of Judah. After his two sons died, Judah met up with Tamar who was posing as a prostitute along the side of a road and as a result of the union, she gave birth to Perez and Zerah. Amazingly, he did not know he had sex with his daughter-in-law, as Scripture reports her face was covered during intercourse. About three months later, when it was reported Tamar was pregnant and proclaimed a prostitute, Judah announced she should be brought out and "burned to death." However, Judah had to do some serious backpedaling when Tamar was able to prove he was actually the man who had impregnated her. (Genesis 38:18 states Judah had given Tamar his "seal and its cord, and the staff in his hand" as a pledge before he slept with her. When she was about to be put to death, she was able to produce Judah's pledge to her and her life was spared.)

The statement "am I my brother's keeper?" was made by Cain when Scripture says the Lord wanted to know the whereabouts of Abel.
